View Full Version : Are you at work? What SHOULD you be doing?

I'm supposed to be doing "journal entries." Apparently it has something to do with accounting. I'm supposed to be typing account numbers, department IDs, sometimes subaccount numbers, debit and credit amounts and brief explanations of the transactions into an electronic ledger. I have no clue whether my entering this stuff transfers funds or not, what these accounts and departments are or, really, anything about why it is that I'm doing it. It's deathly dull and I can only stand to do about two of them before I have to distract myself to retain full consciousness. This is deadly stuff to stick a body with during the last hour of work on a Friday afternoon.

I'm supposed to be putting together an animal cruelty lesson plan for ~30 9th-grade boys, to present to them at 8 am Monday morning. Putting this plan together involves looking at dozens of horrific animal abuse evidence photos that animal control gave me. Strangely, I'm procrastinating :(.

Updating the webpage. Billing. Accounts payable.

meh.

(Fridays are like that around here.)

I'm supposed to be entering all the results of the last event (Tuesday) into our database. I've already put them into Excel sheets, but our Nat'l Office insists we put them into this other piece-of-shit program, too.

This is how tedious it is. If I want to put in a new committee member, I have to put in: title, gender, age range, assistant's name. Then I am allowed to go on to the business address screen.

I hate it, and the worst is it's DUPLICATE WORK.

I just spent five hours with the accountant. If any one says one freaking word to me about what I supoze ta be doin, I'm going to put my shoe down their throat and/or up their ass.

I'm supposed to be redoing some analysis on fMRI images because of an error that was found recently. I'm hungry though. I'd like to eat something instead.

I'm running the broadcast of a public radio fundraising drive. I'm having to continuously rewrite the automation log to accomodate the different NPR schedule they run on during pledge drives. I am doing columns of math, adding up minutes and seconds to know what to move to what place on the clock, and when we can come in to pitch. I'm acting as producer to civilians going on the radio to ask people to pledge. I'm writing down how long we spent pitching. I'm getting audio feeds from several places and making promos to air next week. I read a stack of announcements that all have to be edited and put on the automation computers.

Every now and then I get a window to come over here and see what you guys are talking about, and maybe contribute.

Busy? Yeah. Getting it all to work? Yeah. Glad it's over in an hour and a half? Yeah.

I'm supposed to be editing a magazine of logic problems. This is what I supposedly have been doing all week. I spent most of the day Monday on it and got back to it about 2:00 this afternoon. No, I don't want to do it -- but all of the other stuff involved other stuff I also had to do.

What made it annoying was an underling coming in and asking if there was any more of this to proof. What, you think I'm too freakin' stupid to remember to give it to you if it were ready?

I am one of those lucky 24×7 network support people so as long as I wear my pager, I am ALWAYS at work.

But no, I'm not at work right now.

I should be coding yet another modification to our web-based database search system, but dammit, I'm tired...

I could be doing lots of things.
Most urgent is this pile of orders to be placed, I suppose. I place one every ten minutes or so.

I'm supposed to be reviewing raw data and checking all calculations for a completed study before QAing the report. I am doing that, just...with breaks.

i just came out of a two hour staff meeting with lots of fluffy words such as Innovation, Diversity and Integrity.

Now I'm supposed to be updating projects in our spiffy (not) new (debatable) project management system.

meh.

I'm actually done with most of the stuff I had to do (Ginormous webserver snafu straightened out and Monday's lecture online? Check. Physics homework solution written? Check.) and I'm just killing time until it's time to go pick up the hubby.

Now, I could be working on the exam I'm supposed to give next week. Or I could be adding a few paragraphs to my thesis. Or I could be getting a jump start on grading lab reports. Or not.

Okay, fine, this thread has guilted me into doing a few exam questions before I go.

I'm supposed to be doing "journal entries."

Hey! Me too! I thought it would be a nice, mindless Friday afternoon task, but I started doing it and I noticed that our accountants made a couple of errors. So, I should be reconciling the numbers, but since it's Friday, I don't feel like it. I'm saving it until Monday. :p

And on that note, it's 5:00 and [dennis miller]I. am. outtahere.[/dennis miller]

Have a good weekend, everyone. :)

My work load has been pretty light this week (after two solid months of huge-software-release insanity), but I still manage to procrastinate: right now I should be finishing the MS Word template that I told one of our project managers I'd set up for him. Things spin up again next week (white papers to be edited, projects to be documented, etc.), so I'll probably buckle down and finish the template before I leave today.

The SDMB is the best "procrastinator's little helper" ever! :D

I'm supposed to be reviewing a royalty agreement that will theoretically end a lawsuit.

I'm supposed to be writing a search statement that a customer requested. But, that's about 10 minutes work, and I have 80 minutes left, so it can wait.

Other than that, I'm just waiting for the stragglers to submit their football picks.

I'm supposed to be annotating notes and clarifications to a new record contract for one of my artists before it goes to our attorney.

Horribly tedious stuff. Have you ever seen a record contract? This one's a short one, and it's still over 60 pages of maybe 9 point font. And I have significant notes and corrections for just about every damn paragraph in the thing.

Normally I can deal with these pretty easily, but I realized that a) it's Friday and b) right now I really don't give a sh*t.

So here I am.

Lucky stiffs. I don't have internet access at work. When I want to goof off, I have to play Free Cell or Minesweeper.

I'm supposed to be proofreading medical documents and generating quality reports. I only have four left for the month, which is maybe 45 minutes worth of work (I was a bit too efficient this week in getting everything done before I leave on vacation). Aside from that, I have jack to do, unless I want to go hunting for a project, which I don't.

Well, if you're talking "should," I think I should be gleefully crushing the skulls of the Ernst & Young SOX-compliance consultants with a cinder block, but for some reason management disagrees.

I'm at work...

I guess maybe I should be doing practice jobs since there's no work...

but, I'm only working in this dept. until my trainer gets back from his training to train me for another job.

Plus, I've just spent the last 5 hours working on a hellacious job that no one else wanted to touch.

So I think I've earned a few minutes of SDMB!

Right now I'm supposed to be transferring a user's personal data from one laptop to another. Actually, I am doing that right now. I'm waiting for the files to finish copying.
I'm supposed to be doing "journal entries." Apparently it has something to do with accounting.
This is funny to me, because later tonight, I'll be checking for journal errors on our accounting system. Get to work Otto! And make sure you enter that stuff correctly. :D

I'm waiting for someone to rob a bank, have a heart attack, or set something on fire.

But since it's 5:49 on a Saturday morning here in Hooterville, it's probably not gonna happen anytime soon.

Right now I am supposed to be finding cable pairs and programming and stuff to get people dial tone. But, I am way out on my due dates so nothing is urgent - even if I did my part the techs aren't scheduled to go out until at least late next week so there's not much point.

40 minutes left and then I can go home and watch Van Helsing (I picked up the DVD at lunchtime. David Wenham and Hugh Jackman - it's like they made the movie just for me :D )

Since the OP was posted at 3 o'clock, I'd probably be deciding which tea I should be making. After making and drinking the tea, maybe thinking about writing a report, or perhaps wondering outside to watch other people work.

Seeing as I haven't been to work in two weeks, none of the above intensive labour applies. :D
