So I'm an Intern in the School system right now. I love working with kids, though I hate administration and being a parent to the really bratty/bad kids. I also hate being an intern (I'm far away from home and not getting paid, plus I have everyone looking over my shoulder) I also hate the long hours. I taught today till 3:30, and then had aftershool band reherearsal till 5, and now I must correct assignments and prepare for tomorrows lessons.

Arrgh! I need a break.

But for real, I think I'm going to try and go for it in music as a musician/private teacher/ composer and arranger. I still get to work with kids, and I love performing. The pay might be lower, but then again if I work hard it might not. I'm 22 so i'm still young. What do you think? Yea or nay? I know I have to see if being a musician is my true calling. I'm wondering how have others fared when switching careers after University/college. I am fortunate that I have no debts right now so really I still have a blank slate.

If you love performing, creating and being with kids, then I'd suggest you looking into a local performing theatre troupe. Many of them tend to be non-profit (okay, there's my non-profit plug), and are usually looking for new blood. Yeah, the pay stinks, but if they're truly non-profit, and you have a background teaching, then you could potentially increase your revenue through grants and corporate sponsorship.

Places to begin--local community college, local artists, small theatres, public school system, local foundations, local newspapers (which will give you a good heads-up as to what is already available in your area).
