View Full Version : A Poll: Should I Change My Doper Name?

Change merely for the sake of change doesn't make a lot of sense. Staying-the-same merely for the sake of staying the same doesn't make any better sense. There should be a sound reason for the decision one way or the other.

I have recently come out as transgendered. I identify as a woman rather than as a man. Discussing it here on the SDMB, I got the feeling that my name Jomo Mojo doesn't fit all that well any more. Maybe I should get a more recognizably female name? I know you've gotten used to me as Jomo, but it just doesn't seem to fit any more. (Also, I'm sick and tired of being erroneously associated with that damn cartoon monkey; my name predated that cartoon by many years and had nothing to do with it.)

I have E-mailed our most noble and beautiful Mod, TubaDiva, and she approved the change should I decide to go ahead with it. So what say, Dope community? Yea or nay?

Forsooth, I say, it mattereth not whether we likest thy name or whether we utterly abominate and despise it; yea, it mattereth only if thou likest it, and thou alonest.

(BTW, where resideth thee?)

I think you should change your name to Mojo Jojo, if for no reason other than that's what I always see.

Now that I know you don't like the psychotic simian and that it isn't a tribute, I think you should change it!

If I were going to change my name to a female name, I would pick Marigold.

How about Dea Linguarum or Domina Linguarum?

You're a linguist, aren't you?

How 'bout Unvoiced Velar Plosive? Or Alveolar Trill?

Mojo Jojo, if for no reason other than that's what I always see.ARRRGHGH! That does it. :mad:

As I mentioned in one of the transgender threads, my girl-name is Hannah, and there aren't enough palindrome names around here...

Poll closes at midnight tonight.

Or Labial Fricative?

As for palindrome Doper names, I must acknowledge that I Love Me, Vol. I is the palindrome king.

Eve is another palindrome, and also a simple girl-name. Eve is my Doper heroine and worthy of emulation.

How about Dea Linguarum or Domina Linguarum?
Hmm, 'the Mistress of Tongues.' Sounds naughty. :eek: If I ever go for a black-leather persona, I'll keep that in mind. The Latin adds a certain Eurogoth flair. Like in The Ninth Gate.
If I were going to change my name to a female name, I would pick Marigold.Oh, that's so pretty. Go for it. Was Gumby already taken?

"Why would you eschew clever wordplay and arch pop culture allusions and pick a plain girl-name like Hannah? You're into palindromes? You're into mid-20th-century Jewish women philosophers? You've seen the movie Hannah and Her Sisters one too many times?"

No, actually I've never even seen that movie. In fact, the name Hannah is based etymologically on both my maternal grandmother's name and my original name. Sometimes, simple is smartest. Like a little black dress. As for mid-20th-century Jewish women philosophers, I think Simone Weil is cool, but the name Simone doesn't work for me.

Hey, I'm doing my part!

Of course, something simple like Hannah may well be the way to go, as long as it isn't taken.

Thanks for your replies and suggestions, everyone.

The ayes have it! Please give a warm welcome to Ms. Hannah (a new butterfly peeking out at the world through a little aperture in her chrysalis).

Thanks to Tuba Diva and Happy New Year to our wonderful Dope community. Time to quote Tennyson:

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Whoops, I seem to have hit a speed bump on the way to the new me. Tuba informs me that the name Hannah was already used once, briefly. No duplications: this is the Straight Dope, not the Straight Dupe!

I requested the name Johanna, which rhymes with my first choice, and comes from a great Bob Dylan song. Hope that will fly.

Another vote for Mojo Jojo. It fits the bill and it will be easily guessable by people who know you by your current name.

Labial Fricative sounds like a medical condition.

SDMB quirk -- your posts in this thread (and others, I presume) are now all credited to Johanna, but your credit as thread starter on the forum index still reads "by Jomo Mojo". So the old name will live on, as do numerous then-correct mentions of Cassius Clay, Walter Carlos, (http://www.intuitivemusic.com/tguidewaltercarlos.html) et alii. And though some of your corporeal aspects may undergo changes as you leave your maleness behind, the brain that's made you one of the great contributors to the board will remain essentially the same.

I noticed that too with my own username - heck, there are still threads hanging around that were started by aryk29. More than likely threads where the last post is still credited to that name, too.

Brucha haba'ah!You know, I couldn't help reading that as Bruja haba'ah! - 'Blessed be the witch'! Thanks, man. You're a pal.

Sternvogel (Starbird, hey, nice name, like Starhawk, speaking of witches), aw shucks, you are too kind. Thank you.
I guess it's too late to choose "Joey Jo-Jo, Junior Shabadoo "?LOL ... And have to type all that every time I logged in?

astro, thanks, you're right, Gloria Gaynor speaks for me.

Your life is a sham
Until you can shout out "I am what I am"

I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses

Off to allmusic.com to find out who is this Gloria Gaynor of which we speak.

P.S. These visions of Johanna have now taken my place.
