I keep hearing about how the water ran out to sea leaving "stranded fishes" and I brought it up in this lack of dead animals (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=5666622#post5666622) post.

Does there exist a photo or video of such an event?

I doubt the person and their camera would survive to see the light of day, but........

There's a aerial photo of it in this slideshow (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4136289.stm).

I would think otherwise. If someone were taking a video with the camera pointed at the water, and saw as he was recording the water quickly receding, if that person knew this was a sign of a tsunami, they could have quickly ran away from the shore with their camera. While most at the beaches had no clue of the signficance of the water receding, surely at least a few of them did, and fled inland.

Oh my God.

I almost cried when I saw that photo. Couldn't help imagining the emotions of those at the shore when the water sucked out. First, the amazement. Then, immediately after, the realization of what must be about to happen. The panic. And then....

Oh God, I am gonna cry.

Here's a picture of the receded waterline as the tsunami wave makes its approach.

A pic of the tide out, and a tsunami coming in.

This fellow survived, and wrote about it at length.

A woman wades back to help as the giant wave smashes onto the beach, sweeping boats before it. It is not known what became of any of those pictured.

Satellite images, to include receding tide. Also, before and after images.
