I just installed Redhat Linux on a pentium 100. It can't detect the NE2000 compatible NIC. What I/O and IRQ should I specify to make it work?

Whatever address and IRQ the card itself is set for. You may have to make a boot disk with the card's "softset" utility on it to find or change these settings. Also, some cards are only NE2000 compatible if put into that mode.

I try to keep an really old NIC around for just this sort of thing. I had some honest-to-God Novell-Eagle 2000 cards for a while. With jumpers. I could set those babies up on any machine.

These days, though, they're going to be pretty hard to find. The next-best choice is to find a NIC that is explicitly supported. It probably won't cost more than $40.

Before you give up, make sure your kernel is configured with NE2000 support or a module. is it loading PNP support? Also, try using some generic values like 300h and irq 9.

mblackwell, I've got a doc showing the dip switch settings for the original NE2000 if that would help. You say "NE2000-compatible", so there's no guarantee the settings are the same, but if it's of help...

Thanks everyone, I put in a spare NIC I had and it works fine now.

I put the first NIC in a windows machine, got the I/O and IRQ, put it back in the Linux box and put in the values and it still wouldn't work. oh well
