From 18:00 GMT tonight, the legendary heroes Captain Timbob and Kid London will once again be defending the innocent on the streets of Paragon City.

At some point tonight, we want to give the Sister Psyche task force a go, so i figured i'd drop a post here and see if anyone was going to be round tonight who fancied joining us.

Also, I know there are other players here on the boards, but i'm intrigued as to whether there are any other Brits who play the game - since its technically not been released over here yet.

Any players?

I'm afraid that I'll be in class at that time due to the time difference, otherwise I would (though freakshow are not my favorite opponents).

In any case, though, you should probably specify which server it is that you play on.

garius

True - Pinnacle server.

To be honest we probably won't kick the taskforce off until about 8ish our time.

Khiadra, there's a SDMB supergroup on Virtue, if you're interested. As long as you're a doper, a friend of a doper, or have once heard of the Dope, then you're welcome.

Send a /tell to Master Electric. I'll get an invite sent your way.

garius - Come to Virtue. You know you want to.

Same here - as there's two of us in the house we tend to try and coincide our levels. we're both 24 at the moment

Hey, thanks :) I already have an SG that I'm happy with, but I'd quite like to tee up a group sometime if you're interested.

My favourite chars are my level 24 Dark/Invul scrapper, Requisite Force, and my level (I think) 18 Empath/Radiation defender, Khiah Adaria.

Mental Note: When in the process of getting addicted to a game, always check the Dope.

I got introduced to this game over the weekend when I was visiting friends in PGH. I'm in the process of building a new computer (okay, having a friend build me a new computer) for gaming and am now fiending. With no ability to play it for at least six weeks or so. Probably more like 8.

I was on the Virtue server. Levels 1-8.

I've got a 22 tanker on pinnacle, and I'm pretty time-flexie. Dunno what sister's levels are for the TF, though.

I've also got a full roster on Virtue, including a 39 scrapper, a 24 defender, and various 6-17s.

Oh, and as a side note; the tank is named 'Crush Groove', and is an invuln / earth. I have so many defensive toggles I -can't- generally attack, but my taunt is HUGE and I pretty much ignore all non-psionic damage.

Two of my housemates got me into it, and then they moved on to World of Warcraft. Darn them anyway. My blaster can always use tankers (meatshields) to team with, and my defender can always use just about anyone to team with; her damage output is painfully low.

Unfortunately, I play on Champion, which no one else has listed.

Sparkes, 33 Blaster electrical/electrical
Safia, 23 Defender dark/dark
Mr. Prickly, 17 Scrapper claws/super reflexes

Technically, not a Brit - I'm a Yank living in London - and I play on Virtue. I'm a level 40 claws/super reflexes scrapper called Korenwolf. Might try to catch some of y'all online, as my supergroup recently folded.

I have a level 6ish char on Virtue called Verminhater (claws/dark scrapper), or a couple of other chars if you don't mind RSKing one - Mea Culpa (blaster), Momma Mea (blaster), Approximator (controller).

I have a couple of others but I generally only play them when I've got a friends group teed up ahead of time, so no point in giving you those ones. :)

Shoot me a tell if you see me online! Uh, but be sure to mention you're a Doper or odds are I'll be curiously unavailable. Having played EQ for years, and now CoH, I've learned to truly loathe random group invites. :)

You can find out most of our character names at our website and forum located here (http://sdmb.culex.us/). And there are a couple of associated SGs as well, one for our lesser played alts and another for a group that started playing Dark/Dark scrappers. There is usually someone on from early evening until I log off in the morning.

I don't think you need to give it up. I have a couple of alts with single member SGs. It may never be a huge SG, but it can still be useful and fun.

I got City of Heroes for Christmas and it has become the all-consuming obsession of my life -- I mean skipping meals, losing sleep, the whole bit. Not that I'm complaining ;)

The first month or so I was addicted to creating characters; consequently I have upwards of 30 characters spanning ALL of the servers. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I started really playing in earnest. As it happens, my most-played and highest level character is in Virtue: a level 17 blaster named Shockfox. He's already in a terrific SG, but if any Dopers want to say hi, or even team up, I'd love to meet you. I'll be on around 6 pm EST this evening.

A couple of other characters that I play semi-regularly are Beautiful Mind, a level 13 Defender in Pinnacle (I think...I'm at work right now) and Lady Lacerator, a level 8 Scrapper in Champion (I think). I might have to double-check on those servers when I get home, but again I'd love to hear from any Dopers in those servers. These two characters aren't in SGs so if ya'll want to start up Doper chapters in those servers, I'd be up for it.

I also occasionally play a Tanker called the Ultra-American, but for the life of me I can't recall which server he's in -- I'll have to get back to you on that.

I have a level 6ish char on Virtue called Verminhater (claws/dark scrapper)....

We've got a Dark Armor-focused SG on Virtue as well, although it's also open to non-SDMBers. It's open to */DA scrappers, */DB defenders, and Warshades. We're trying out an aura-centric playstyle with heavily-slotted Death Shroud. You can check it out at http://rank.culex.us/ and see if you're interested. We usually get together on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as most of these characters are alts, but some of us are on a lot more.

*laugh* that's a beautiful theme you have going there :)

Sadly, Verminhater got the chop the other day and was recreated as a claws/regen scrapper. The constant whine from my self-buff was giving me an awful headache (I play with headphones on, so it was right in my ear).

I have 2 other dark scrappers, but they're dark primary rather than secondary (shadow maul is THE most fun attack around, I reckon). I already have an SG, though Verm's not been re-enlisted in it yet.

However, I love the premise of R.A.N.K. and think it rocks. :D

Loath as I am to paying a monthly fee in order to play a game, I've decided to get in on City of Heroes. It's certainly cheaper than cable and probably more entertaining!

I have only one character so far, a Broadsword Scrapper called Ivory Knight. He's currently level 3 on Virtue.

Ivory Knight is up to level 4 and having hellatrouble with a bunch of Clockworks in a door mission.

I'm an altaholic, too. I'm concentrating on Master Electric, because I've had him since April, and, by golly, he should be higher than 31.

I also have:
Dimsdale - Scrapper Spine/Regen
The HIdden Mouse - Scrapper Katana/DA
Soren Surt - Tanker - Fire/fire
Pretty Boy Joe - Defender - Kinetics/Dark
Siracco - Controller - Fire/Storm

I've deleted more than I can count.

Mack Carnage: claws/super reflexes scrapper
Max Carnage: super strength/invulnerability tank
She Carnage: gravity/kinetics controller
Kid Carnage: Mace/invul tank
Robo-Carnage: fire/elec blaster
Pestilenz: illusion/empathy controller
Lando The Free: energy/energy blaster
Homer The Brave: martial arts/regen scrapper

Usually I'm on as Mack, Pesti, or lately a lot of Lando.

I found out why IK was having so much trouble with those Clockworks. A Cannon Knight was hiding in there! Didn't have much of a problem after giving that thing a KO. IK is now level 5 and troll hunting in The Hollows.

I've also added a Tanker called GreenMonster (Green Monster was already taken). He's based on The Hulk, so you can probably guess his powers. I got him through levels so fast that I didn't notice he was a 5 until he started incurring debt!

Ms. Eyre - 31 katana/inv scrapper
Eliza Bennett - 36 empath defender

Brainiac4 is generally on as Super-Collider or Thermocline.

Can't sell inspirations.

Enhancements can be sold at the Freedom Corps Training Personnel - they're in red and white costumes, and there's a pair of them in City Hall, a pair near Ms. Liberty, a pair near Back Alley Brawler in Galaxy City.. and other spots.

Once you get enhancements that aren't 'Training' enhancements, you need to sell them at specific matching stores to get the best price. The stores are in City Zones, starting with Steel Canyon and Skyway City. You'll be adventuring in those zones well before seeing the first Dual-Origin enhancements though.

I've added another alt: an Inulnerable/Axe Tanker named Brian Bloodaxe. His story is that he escaped from a 20-year-old C64 game. I was a bit surprised that he wasn't already taken.

I had a great time with Mr. Bloodaxe last night. Three others - a blaster, a tanker, and a healer - came to help me with one of those Clockwork doors. That warehouse was absolutely loaded with Dukes! Our team leader said the mission had respawned for a five-man team.

Wheee, more Dopers on Virtue!

As my lovely and talented wife pointed out, I'm there too.

On Virtue:

Thermocline - 41 Fire/Ice blaster
Super-Collider - 30 Rad/Rad defender
Scraptacular - 12 MA/SR scrapper
Dr. Livingstone - 8 Inv/Stone tanker
Doctor Infernal - 5 Fire/Rad controller

I also have a couple I am not currently playing, but will happily bring out if needed

Night's Fang - 18 DM/DA scrapper (in RANK)
Night's Touch - 11 Kin/DB defender (in RANK)
Synthezoid - 7 Energy/Dev blaster

My global chat handle is @Brainiac4, and I can be found in CECIL if I am on.

For members of the C.E.C.I.L. supergroup, we have recreated the group and are now known as CECIL. Log into /chat beta 1 and set up CECIL as your default chat. Give us a yell and we'll swap you over.

[originally posted at sdmb.culex.us]

As most of you have realized, CECIL (v2.0) is up and running. Not ones to leave any member behind, we ask that you send a tell to any of the usual suspects or log into the beta chat agent and let us know you need to get swapped over to the updated supergroup.

If you have any problems, you can always post here and we'll get with you asap.

Hope everyone enjoys the new digs!

You have to type in either /chatbeta 1 or /chat_beta 1. If you try /chat beta 1, it thinks you are giving 2 arguments to the /chat command. (Found this out the hard way when I couldn't get global chat working. :p)

And any of you on CoH are welcome to join the CECIL channel, and the CECIL supergroup if you have characters on Virtue. The more the merrier. :)

Controllers are hard to play solo at low levels. Defenders are kind of frustrating, in that they really shine in a group, but you sometimes feel like you're not *doing* anything... until you take one hit too many, go down and watch the whole team fold like a cheap suit without the benefit of your buff/debuff abilities.

My main is a blaster, as posted above, level 41. But my original character, and primary alt, is a defender, and he's often more fun to play -- it's easy to feel heroic when you can save other heroes. See someone near death? Zip over and heal, maybe debuff their foes and buff them, make sure they live through it, then accept their gratitude and be on your way.

Man, I love this game.

My main right now is Johnny Daemon, a level 43 DM/INV scrapper. On Virtue, part of the CECIL supergroup.

I also have Rat ta tat tat, my level 36 AR/DEV blaster, and Va Va Boom, a level 15 Rad/Rad defender. I rarely play these two anymore. Rat was my main for a long time, but with the changes to smoke grenade way back in issue 2, he was having more and more trouble surviving.

JD, on the other hand, has no such problems. Except the 24 million xp left from 43 to 50. Sigh.

Okay, I've taken some of my favorite unplayed characters from other servers and re-created them in Virtue, because I love my SG in that server.

My main character in Virtue was an electrical blaster called Shockfox; I got him up to level 18 and then sort of lost interest. I don't feel I have anything to look forward to with him. I know that at level 20 you can get a second costume and you're eligible for a cape. But I'm not interested in another costume because I don't feel I can improve on his current one; I've played around with some alternative designs and nothing works for me. And I definitely don't want a cape -- he's not a cape guy at all. So if I kept playing him I'd basically just be leveling up for the sake of leveling up, and going on endless missions with no real goal.

So Shockfox is more or less retired, at least for now. But in a weird, neurotic way I'd feel disloyal to my SG if I just disappeared, so I've transplanted some other characters to Virtue. Fortunately 2 out of the 3 names were not taken. I chose them because I have additional costumes in mind for them, and they'd also look good in capes.

The are:

Coldzone, an ice blaster.

Brainpower, a defender (his original name was Psionix but that was taken in Virtue; I lucked out with "Brainpower," a better name IMO).

Jingo Belle, a scrapper and my new favorite/primary. She has an astonishing number of hit points, which I'm not at all used to, having mostly played a blaster -- you know how that is. And she does this jumping/spinning kick that is fabulous to behold :-)

Anybody mind if I send you a /tell to say hi?

Not at all.

When I'm on, you can send a tell to

Jim Beam, level 38ish MA/SR scrapper
ERG-1, level 30 En/En blaster
ERG-4, level 25ish Rad/Rad defender
Blue Genesis, level 14 Inv/EM tanker

I'm always willing to take in a small (less than 4) team, especially on anyone who isn't Jim Beam.

I like the controller though. (Illusion/empathy) And I didn't mind soloing - though I liked duoing much, much more. enough healing goodness to keep one or two others alive, and enough damage ability to get a few good licks in as well.

When I get my computer, I'll probably have a defender as well - I like healers. (I had to explain that concept to the healer in the last group I played with - she had an over fondness for Absorb Pain, saying that she'd rather die than one of us. My comment was that if she died, I couldn't heal everyone else and rez her, and the way we were going that would mean we would all be gone. *sigh*)

Hallows missions are bad. For some reason, the game designers have decided to send you places where you will die getting there. Recommendation - find a higher level teleporter to take you to the door, and hope someone hanging out at the entrance has teleport friend to get you back out. Or don't take Hallows missions.

The nice thing about CoH debt is that you still get XP while in debt, just half as fast.

I don't mean to be negative, but.... Dude... If 188 is gonna scare you off, this might not be the game for you.

My main, Meggido, has had 140k debt before. Last night I racked up 105k in a few hours and had it all paid off about 2 hours later. Don't fear the debt, my brothers!
Master Electric is well on his way to getting his third Debt Badge. It's almost odd. When I'm debt free, I almost feel like I'm leveling too fast.

We were so close; it was the final wave that overpowered us. I guess our damage output wasn't high enough. Still, I had a lot of fun. And got a enough to debt to last me a while. ;)

I did get Level 27 out of it, and the 'Tough' badge. And progress on the Sky Skiff kill-badge. I probably will try the Trial again at L28, when I have fresh new SOs.

Kaspar Hauser, all Dopers are welcome. We're on the Virtue server, although some have alts on other servers. No, you need to be level 10 to create a SG. Any level can be a member, you just need to be invited by someone with that level of authority. Which is pretty much every main in the group for CECIL. :p

So if you want your various characters to be a member, just send a /tell or join up with the CECIL channel and we will get you into the SG. The only real limit is no more than 4 alts per person in the group at a time. If we actually start to hit the 75 member limit, we will start to lower the number of alts allowed, but that is probably not going to happen any time soon.

We have been known to shun low level alts to mini-CECIL (although I may be the only one currently playing a Mini-CECIL character or two, I know I was running around last night as the only one, but didn't check last logins). That was basically because people would be running a lot of low level alts, get bored with them sometime between levels 7 and 12 and then take up space for 30 days-space we really wanted for people who were playing their characters. With global chat and most of the chatter happening on the global chat channel, it isn't really the deal it was a month ago, where you "needed" to get into CECIL to really know if someone was forming a team you wanted to be on. Now you just need to be part of the channel and SG membership isn't as important for gameplay.

Run over to ICON, the lowest-level of which is in Steel Canyon, north-west corner (you can tell the building cos of the costumed manequins in front of it). If you talk to Serge in the back, he'll give you a mission (defeat 20? 30? Tsoo), after which you can get your first 'new costume' slot. You can change costumes -before- that, but this gives you a second set of threads for your character! (Mine's such a clothes horse! I think I've blown at least 10 mil on costumes alone).

And, as a side note, I defeated the Carnival of Shadows archvillain last night! Sheesh! Battle literally took us over 20 minutes -after- we cleared out everything else! Her regeneration is just scary!

I took Conserve Power and I love it. Elude drains all my Endurance when it fnishes. So after my End builds for about 3 seconds, I hit CS and don't have to worry about pacing my attacks since they hardly use any End at that point. Congrats... and yes. Dangerosa and I have two accounts (two total, that is, not two each -- we're not that alt-happy), and each one is billed separately.

I do recommend two accounts if you have two players -- no fighting over who gets to play, and you get to play coop. In our case, we share an office, so we can team up really effectively.

I've had relatively limited success with getting Dangerosa to share my interest in games. She got into Diablo II with me, but that was hard to play together with characters of different levels. We both played a lot of SSX, SSX Tricky and SSX3, but those are hard to play together since they're split-screen and competitive. What I really want from a gameplaying experience with my wife is one that lets us cooperate, and City of Heroes delivers that well, with the added bonus that the Sidekicking mechanism lets heroes of different levels play together and both be effective.

I guess what I'm saying is that, if you love games and want to share that with someone that you love, playing cooperatively is a great way to do it, and CoH does that well. And opportunities to share your hobbies should not be passed up, IMO. Although the system limitations might be a roadblock.

Oh well, you can always build another system. :)

Medea's Child: when you create your empath, I suggest you go with a Defender and make your secondary either dark blast or psychic blast. These will allow you to be a sniper at level 5; well-timed sniper attacks can take out even-level foes in two shots. This is quite useful for early missions in The Hollows - use fire escapes to go up to a roof and target Outcasts and Trolls on opposite roofs. With luck, you'll "arrest" them and they won't even know how to get to you! That's what I was doing for the past couple of days with my latest creaton (a dark blast empath called Night's Ward).

To get the basic TFs, you just have to be on a team of sufficient size, and have your team lead talk to one of the TF Hero types, appropriate for your level. The Level 16-21 guy is Synapse, in Skyway City. Minimum # of team members is 4. And my White-Russian happens to be looking for an opportunity to take on that TF soon..

Hey, whattya mean? Belle can take a lot of hits! My biggest problem is I burn up endurance at an obscene rate and run out at the most inconvenient times, even though I've triple-enhanced the endurance on every one of my powers. When I reach level 18 I'm going to open the Fitness pool power set with an eye toward the endurance preservation power (I forget what it's actually called) -- but I won't be able to get that until level 22. In the meantime, do you think it would work if I just emptied out ALL of my enhancements slots and filled them with nothing but endurance enhancements? Or would that be a waste?

I've been where you are, Nordic/Jingo, and I have the bruises to prove it!

Compared to a tank (let alone 3 of them), you can't take a hit. Compared to everyone else, you can.

By all means, get Stamina. Don't delay. You would have been better off putting off another attack until Stamina. And you need to slot it ASAP, at level 23 and 25, to the exclusion of other powers. At levels 22 and 23, ask one of your SG mates or me to get you the Endurance Recovery SO for it. (Only contacts sell it; you won't be able to buy it until later).

At that level, I had one Endurance Reduction DO in every toggle power. It was tough. I would often leave off my ranged toggle and pray. I didn't get Agile until later; I believe you already have it. Only use Focused Senses if fighting lots of ranged foes. Don't horde inspirations. The tray fills up quickly. And remember what I said: Turn off Sprint, or any other movement power (to include Combat Jump). Hopefully, you've upgraded to all DOs; if not, I can help there too (influence past 32 is a joke).

Hopefully, you have gotten Practiced Brawler, the only thing more important for you at this stage of the game than Stamina.

The plus side to the next few levels is that you will be getting powers you will have no use slotting (whichever 2 of Sprint/Hurdle/Health that you get), so you'll have slots for existing powers.

SR is more about luck and odds than any other defensive powerset. It's one advantage is that it defends against EVERYTHING (somewhat) equally. When you get Lucky and Evasion, there is no attack that you are not defended against. You laugh at Psionics and Toxic as much as Lethal and Smashing.

If this works, you'll have three tanks. A scrapper adventuring with tanks has to take a different approach from the normal jump-in-first-and-hope-one-doesn't-die. Tanks aren't doing great damage; that's your job. But no one will be swinging at you. You should be able to fight with no toggles once we start to gel.

Nordic,

Its worth going to the CoH boards and doing some character research. Missteps early on can gimp a character and make it near impossible to play (my fire/fire tank needs to be respec'd in a bad way - she isn't a good tank, and she doesn't do enough damage. And she got powers willy nilly so I have the wrong powers at the wrong levels - no good travel power til 16 and then SuperJump which I turned out to HATE. But she was my first. And at least I didn't slot brawl). There are some good "builds" out there.

Licentious Ectomorph
03-04-2005, 01:41 PM
Okay, going by memory 'cause I'm at work, my current powers are:

MA: Storm Kick, Thunder Kick, Cobra Strike, Crane Kick, and whatever the power is called that boosts my damage and accuracy temporarily.

SR: Focused Fighting, Focused Senses, Agility.

Pool: Hover, Fly. (These I don't regret -- first priority was being able to get around without getting killed).

I hope I haven't screwed myself. Unfortunately I can't respec her.

So if I'm understanding correctly, at 18 and 20 I should get the first two Fitness powers so I can get Stamina at 22; I don't need to slot the first two, but I should slot the hell out of Stamina once I get it, and get the SO endurance recovery enhancement.

After that, I need Practiced Brawler, then Luck and Evasion.

No additional offensive powers until much later, if ever.

Sound like a plan?

I have gotten in the habit of turning off my Sprint in combat, and I've also learned I don't always need my Focused Fighting/Senses, especially when working with tanks.

I'll bow to any wisdom superior to my own. What I was doing before was just alternately adding offensive and defensive powers as I leveled up (plus Hover and Fly when I could), thinking I'd be pretty well covered that way. But the endurance drain has gotten to be a real problem.

I'm going to agree with CandidGamera, except I'd go PB / Swift / Hurdle / Stamina. You will be seeing more and more villians whose mezzes (mezmering attacks, which turn off toggles) will kill you, starting now. Practiced Brawler is the best mez protection in the game, better than any other scrapper or tank protection. With two SOs, you should have it up 24/7 (set it to auto).

You can respec at 24, which is when you will probably be right where you want to be. It will, however, allow you to move things around, get Stamina earlier, and have it slotted by 24. A common strategy for many (not me, though) is to earn the respec, then to copy the character onto the test server in order to test powers and builds. You can also scope out your build ahead of time with a Hero Planner. You can find one at http://coh.stratics.com/

Endurance Management
You are at the toughest time in your career, endurance-wise. It gets a lot better. I was lucky to adventure often with Volt Valkyrie, who greatly helped my endurance recovery. Befriend a kinetics or radiation defender! Until you get your defenses highly slotted, you should never leave your house without a defender or two in tow. OK, so that's an exaggeration, but not by much

I kept one Reduce Endurance in all my toggles, and none in attacks. I didn't have agile, yet I would still be selective about when to run Focused Senses. At the lower levels, most ranged attacks are weak. You may be able to survive with just Agile. That will change, and you are better off slotting toggles defenses before passive defenses. Even with 5-slotted Stamina, I still don't use Evasion unless I know I'm facing lots of AoE attacks. Lucky is the one passive I'll slot ahead of the toggle, as I only use the toggle situationally. And remember what I mentioned before about Sprint. Every little bit helps.

For offensive powers, if I were you, I would get Dragon's Tail ("DT"). I have never heard anyone say a nice thing about Crippling Axe Kick. Not a single person. Stay away from it. I, personally, didn't like Eagle's Claw ("EC"), and dropped it when I did my last respec. However, others like EC coupled with Cobra Strike for stunning bosses. If you go this route, I would put a Disorient Duration as my last slot. I have Thunder Kick, Storm Kick and Crane Kick - same attack chain from when I was level 12 (only faster with Hasten). I only use DT when I have 3 or more foes in range. It does excellent knockdown, which means the foe will lose at least one attack against you.

For defensive powers, they are all good. I'd put Evasion at the bottom of the list; it is what I got when I dropped Eagle's Claw. Lots of SR and Regen scrappers take the Fighting power pool to get Tough. They say that the damage resistance greatly helps against alpha-strikes (the big, bad, first attack many bosses and AVs like to use). I'm not one of them, but that doesn't make it a bad strategy.

Note, most of these ideas (except for Praticed Brawler) are my opinion. You want to play a character that's fun for you, not a carbon copy of every other MA/SR scrapper on the server.

Couple pieces of general advice on building City of Heroes characters...

As Dangerosa mentioned, doing some research on the CoH boards (in the Guides section under each of the Archetypes in particular) can be a huge help. That said, here's some tactics in building that I find useful.

The first 12 powers you take (through level 20) are critical. Most of you already know this, but for reference:

Level 1: 2 powers (first or second from Primary, first from Secondary)
Level 2: 1 power (from either Primary or Secondary
Level 3: 2 slots
Level 4: 1 power (from either Primary or Secondary)
Level 5: 2 slots
Level 6: 1 from Primary, Secondary or a Pool
Odd levels going forward get 2 slots, even levels get a power.
(Until level 31, when you get 3 slots instead of two, and past 30 you get powers every 3rd level -- but worry about that later.)

The first 4 powers you take are pretty tightly determined. Then, bBetween 6 and 20, you have 8 choices to make, and 5 of them are probably predetermined.

Why?

First, because you probably want Stamina at 20. It's a really, really helpful power, and almost every build you will read about features it. To get Stamina at 20, you need to take 2 other powers from the Fitness pool. I recommend Hurdle, because vertical is nice with any power. The second choice is pretty build-dependent -- those with healing power can probably skip Health, while those taking Super Speed probably don't need Swift.

Second, you want a travel power. I'm partial to Super Speed, because the Speed pool gives you Hasten, which is just as useful as Stamina, but whatever travel power you take (at 14, when it becomes available) requires that you take one other power from its pool first.

So of the 8 choices, 5 are
- Swift (or Hurdle)
- Health (or Hurdle or Swift)
- Stamina at 20
- Hasten (or Recall Friend, or Combat Jumping, or Hover)
- Superspeed at 14 (or Teleport, or Superleap, or Fly)

Sequencing these is important. As Nordic is finding out, realizing at level 18 that you are going to need Stamina and you don't have anything in Fitness yet means that your next 3 power choices are predetermined, which sucks, because some cool powers are starting to open up at that point and you're not getting them. It also means that you're waiting hours of playtime to get a power that is instrumental to your success.

I lived this pain with Super-Collider. Learn from my mistake.

The moral of the story...

Think ahead in building your character. The first 10 levels or so come fast, and making good power choices can make you really happy later on. Going without another attack at level 8 in order to get Hurdle so you can take a cool power from your primary at 18 and still get Stamina will make you very happy.

Great advice, folks, thanks a lot. I wish I had known this before, but I suppose it's my own fault for not checking the website. I'm not a patient type; I don't want to do research, I want to play. I honestly did not anticipate the endurance being such a problem, since it wasn't at the lower levels. The only other character I've gotten this high is a blaster, and I don't recall endurance drain being a big factor with him either. I figured it was a peculiarity of scrappers, sort of a trade-off because they can take hits so much better.

Oh well, lesson learned. With the current plan I'll be in good shape by 24 so I won't need to respec, right?

How do you set Practiced Brawler to auto?

And what time are we hooking up on Sunday? Anything works for me, though I'd prefer not to start too late in the day.

Corii, feel free to send a /tell to Jingo Belle. She's too low to team up with you (unless you want to sidekick her) but you can certainly say hi.

One advantage a MA scrapper has over some of the others is you can use the Air Superiority attack without intervening animation. (one slot - Accuracy) Not much damage, but it will knock down any foe whether or not they are airborn. That also opens the way for flight, which is my favorite travel power. It's not very fast, but it's safe, and has total vertical control.

A good hint - incompetent team leader turns into "gee, I hear my kids calling. I need to go." If you don't have kids (or young kids) ferrets will do. Basically, you need a CoH equivelent of "I need to wash my hair that night."

The person who recruits the team doesn't have to call the shots. I'm no master strategist, but I frequently have to admonish people not to rush blindly into gaggles of bad guys. If they don't listen, and I get killed repeatedly as a result, I'm outta there.

The Synapse Task Force yesterday was a smashing success. It was my Jingo Belle, CandidGamera's White-Russian, Redwing's Bride of Ash, and a charcter whose name I can't recall (I wrote it down, but I'm at work -- the only time I'm on the Dope ;) ) belonging to, if I'm not mistaken, Pleonast. We also had a few additional members we managed to pick up. In total we had, IIRC, 3 Tankers, 2 Scrappers and 2 Controllers. No Blasters, no Defenders. But we still kicked butt and suffered no casualties, thanks to good rapport and teamwork. Call on me any time, guys.

By the time it was over I had reached level 21. I went on to get my second costume, plus a cape for each costume. And I now have Practiced Brawler and Swift. :)

Dangerosa, how about, as an excuse, daughter's motherboard gave up the ghost and she needed to do her homework on my computer?

Oh, wait, that's the truth.

Nordic, any time you see ERG-4 on, send a tell or even just an invite. Scrappers love defenders, and ERG-4 needs help completing his missions. Lots of help. If I know you are along, I'll raise my mission difficulty a little, the better to get you leveled quickly. Alternately, you can sidekick to my MA/SR scrapper, Jim Beam, and we can street sweep in Brickstown and you can see the unbridled joy that MA/SR becomes. Plus, I can help you switch to SOs when you ding level 22.

Also, I think I have a couple of large team missions waiting in ERG-1's queue, for a time when we have a number of people online.

There's a new Hero Planner (http://joechott.com/coh). Very nice for planning respecs and future development. It will also tell you the effects of many enhancements in their slots, so you know how much damage you are doing or what your defense really is.

I should remember to check this thread more often. So Jingo Belle is a Doper. I didn't realize. Yes, I was playing Kitsune-hime my Oriental Mythos alt. Nordic, you'll quickly realize it's the players, not the characters that make the difference in a team's success or failure. The archetypes are well enough balanced that almost any team is viable if the players are flexible and work together.

I should add you to my global friends list. Do you know about global chat yet? It makes it very easy to find your friends in-game, no matter which character they're using. My main characters are Volt Valkyrie (lvl 30 Defender, Kinetics/Electricity), Eye of Maya (lvl 24 Controller, Illusion/Kinetics), and Kitsune-hime (lvl 29 Scrapper, Claws/Regen). I'm always happy to team up, and I'll switch characters and SK/RSK if needed.

Jim Beam, level 3, wanted more in his second attack power. Was that way until level 24.

Before I read the official boards, I thought you could only slot one of each type of enhancement in a power. So if you could only slot Reduce Endurance and Increase Defence, you only could have 2 slots in a power.

Just needed to vent a bit. People who don't know anything about teamwork shouldn't be forming teams. The second one must have been a teenager, judging from the use of "excreeeam" or some such in place of "extreme". That was the worst! I was playing my dark empath (Night's Ward); first the group gets too split up then after regrouping they aggro too many trolls. When your only healer says "Run!", you need to turn around and haul ass!

The first one was okay save for the scrapper who sent the invite. It was his mission and wanted to do everything himself even though we had a perfectly capable tank. Might as well solo if you're going to do that.

Scrapper probably just wanted a harder mission. I've done that a few times, but only with SG mates. Grab 2-3 teammates, enter mission, disband. In the late 20s/early 30s, scrappers have an "I win" button, so it's not too dangerous.

Now that the global chat is here and my Pinnacle friends can find me anywhere, I'm thinking of making a character on Virtue.

I've already played just about every kind of character I wanted to try, though I haven't got them all, you know, into the 30s and 40s. What I'd like to try now is to start up characters in some kind of inter-working group, five or so players coordinating their archetypes to work extremely well together.

Anybody out on Virtue have any slots left to start someone new? Anybody not on Virtue want to throw in with me?

And lastly, just for the sake of discussion, what would be a fun group of five to get together, designed to operate smoothly as a team?

I figured it'd go like this:
Bla: Ice/Ice
Con: Earth/Empathy
Def: FF/Psychic
Scr: Dark Melee/Invul
Tan: Fire/Axe

This team would have plenty of power to hold and lock down bad guys. It'd have every damage type except toxic. The defender and controller can protect each other pretty darn well. The Force Fields fill in the defensive holes of the Fire tank and the Regen scrapper. The only disadvantage I can see is that the team only gets one sniper, and it's the defender.

If you wanted a chaotic set where every foe was getting knocked down and all around, it'd probably look like:
Bla: Energy/Ice
Con: Illusion/Storm
Def: FF/Energy
Scr: Martial Arts/Regen
Tan: Ice/Axe

Dunno how well that would work. It seems light on healing.

Anyway, I'm just tossing stuff out. I'm not sure what I want to make on Virtue yet, but I'm sort of kicking the idea around.

I've always thought it would be fun to start fresh with a character and develop it in cooperation with someone else. I've been giving my brother the hard sell on this game so we could do that, but so far he doesn't seem interested.

As it happens, I have an Ice/Ice Blaster named Coldzone and a FF/Psychic Defender called Brainpower, both in Virtue and both very low-level (5 and 3 respectively, I believe).

I also have a Dark Melee/Invul Tanker called The Black Bronco in another server, but don't recall which offhand. He's also very low, like level 3.

There's no reason I couldn't create a totally new character in any given server.

Time constraints and committing to regular get-togethers might be a tad problematic, though. I'm being pretty loyal to Jingo Belle at the moment, so I'd be loath to take too much time away from her.

I've already deleted two characters (Ivory Knight and Z-3PO) because wasn't really into them. Z-3PO (Electricity Defender - war cry "Protocol this!") was more of a silly distraction. Dangerosa and I have several pairs.

My main Thermocline is a Fire/Ice blaster, level 41. Dangerosa got tired of hearing me whine about dying all the time, so she created Eliza Bennett, an Empathy/Energy defender, to follow Thermo around and keep him alive. Eliza just made 37.

Dangerosa created Ms. Eyre, a Katana/Invulnerability scrapper to play when she wants to solo, who matches up pretty well with my solo-capable defender, Super-Collider (Rad/Rad). Ms. E is 32 (I think) and SC is 31.

Our latest set is her Fire/Devices blaster Dangerosa and my Fire/Rad controller Doctor Infernal. They're about to hit 14 and get travel powers.

Playing pairs is fun. You get to count on someone else supplying something so you don't have to do it. In the latest pair, Doc has almost no damage capability (I picked up Flurry so that I can do some damage, because my alternative was to Brawl things to death), because Dangerosa is a blaster and can supply more than enough damage for the pair.

Congrats on the new system. As previously noted, the largest grouping of Dopers is on Virtue (at least, the largest we know of).

I currently have one active character of each archetype*, after having experimented a fair amount. That's not nearly enough to capture the variety, of course, as even within the ATs there's a lot of variation, but for now it'll have to do.

Some players and I decided we would test an all-defender teamup and chose Virtue to do it. So far our group of five has
- kinetic/energy
- dark/dark
- radiation/radiation
- empathy-radiation
- force field/radiation

They're all around level 4-5 right now. This teamup works great.

We went a little farther and created an all-controller group up to level 2, just for grins. This is on Victory.

Then we made an all-tanker group (up to level 2 again) on Protector.

And for our all melee-blaster group, a high-damage group which is also sure to die a lot, we chose the Infinity server (because that's how long it'll take us to level with all that debt).

I got a new system a couple months back pretty much so I could play CoH. What is CECIL in need of and I shall promptly create a new charachter on virtue. I have had alot of fun with Arctic Storms L11 Ice/Storm Conroller on Justice. The arctic wind power makes me VERY popular for missions.
CECIL needs whatever you want to play. If you want to recreate your Ice/Storm controller, that would be cool -- I don't think we have one of those.

No rad/* defenders? You should add one -- they team up great. There's an all-rad SG called Buffer Overrun on one of the servers that hammers through missions -- taking down AVs in 45 seconds. Stacking 8 Accelerate Metabolisms gets you near the damage cap without enhancements, plus endurance regeneration and recharge reduction.

What's your character's name? CECIL is still recruiting.

Jim Beam has two AVs ready for the taking. I'd like to go with at least 3 but up to 8. Only caveat is that JB is level 38 and most of the mobs generated will be level 40/41. So, for everyone below 38 who wants to come, I need someone in the 38-40 range.

Blue Genesis is also set to go against Dr. Vahzilok. Mission, other than the good Doctor, should be a cakewalk. BG got the mission when he was level 16 and has since leveled to 18, thanks to a successful Positron Task Force. I'm willing to do this one with only one other, provided the one is a damage-dealer. Larger groups, however, are still invited. Good way to get some low alts some XP. BG is also closing in on the ollows' Caverns mission, and will need a big group for that one, so let me know who in the 15-20 range would be available and would like in on the mission.

I'd like to do one AV per night and finish all three by Friday. Caverns of Transcendence or however that word is spelled will probably be next week.

Always happy to help out fellow CECILians. I desperately want the Cavern of Transcendance badge with Shadow Stranger, but the Exemplar system just isn't persistent enough to risk it, I think. Sup R-HRO might be able to hlep out Blue Genesis with Dr. Vahz, though.

Is it wrong for me to be a teensy bit glad my SO is going out of town because that means I have unlimited CoH access for the next several days? :dubious:

We've competed, bickered, argued and fought over game time almost daily -- no exaggeration -- since we got it last Christmas. We have the healthiest relationship of anyone we know, and in fact have been together almost seven years. But for some reason this stupid game brings out the worst in us. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Anyway, through Sunday I have carte blanche with my precious, and I intend to take full advantage of it. Groceries, exercise and a social life are all overrated anyway. As of Monday he asks that I log off by 10 PM so he can play (he'll be visiting his family in California so he'll have access there). That's actually earlier than I log off when he's home, as I often have to wait until he's in bed to play. But I can't complain too much because in the big picture I'm still getting more time than usual. And I'm taking next Wednesday off work for even more quality time. :D

I'm up for a Task Force on Saturday or Wednesday if anyone's free. Sunday I actually do have other plans so I'll only be playing until mid-afternoon. By Saturday I should be about level 25 or 26, and by Wednesday I should be pushing 30, if not beyond (it's hard to estimate how long it'll take to level at this stage).

By the way, now that I have the coveted Stamina, I'd welcome suggestions as to what to take next.

I finally got Ms. D_Odds to play, but she isn't that good. She and I are keeping a pair of characters together, and are currently doing all the Hollows missions.

Blue Genesis (level 18 Inv/EM tank) has the Caverns of Transcendence mission. 8 people needed.

Both Jim Beam (38 MA/SR scrapper) and Star Lighter (35 Nrg/Dev blaster) both have the Envoy. Hopefully Pleonast will see this and bring out Eye of Maya[/b]. I'm sure [i]Jingo Belle can also attend. Star also has Terra. I'd like to do one of the Envoy missions this evening, work-willing.

Nordic, who do you play other than Jingo Belle? I need also teams for the Caverns of Transcendence and Dr. Vahzilok.

D_Odds,

I do have Shockfox, a level 18 elec/elec blaster in Virtue. He's been languishing in limbo for a while now, but I could break him out of retirement if you want his services. Or, you could ex Jingo Belle -- I'm willing to forgo xp to lend you a hand; lord knows you've been good to me.

Are you just talking about Virtue? I have a level 13 healer in Pinnacle who might be useful. I have many more characters in various servers, including Virtue, but they're mostly unplayed and low-level.

If I recall Ms. D_Odds has a blaster. She might want to recreate herself. Blasters need to move to survive (at least until they get things like superspeed and stealth) which can be really frustrating to someone not used to playing computer games (I know....).

We always set up our six year old with a tank. Hard to die. Easy to play (an Inv Scrapper works too).

That's why she's got me following her around always, a fire/kin controller. She doesn't go on unless I'm there to help. I'm more at risk than she is, although she once failed to get on the elevator because she thought she could run into an open door.

She plays some computer games, mostly the popcap type games (bounceout, zuma, bejeweled). She's fine using either keyboard or mouse, but we're working on using both simultaneously. She keeps hitting the scroll wheel when using the mouse to look around, so she uses the q/e keys instead, which is too slow.

It really is amazing how different teams can be like night and day.

The first team I joined last night was not only incompetent, but rude and attitudey as well. One example: We had a mission set for Tenacious, fighting Tsoo in an office building. We got into a tight spot right outside the elevators on the second floor. The healer was not doing his job. I was within a hair's breadth of dying, so I and two others retreated down the elevators. After we recharged, we went back up to find that the battle was over but two of our teammates had died. One of the casualties actually said, "We were fine until some people ran. Why did you run?"

WTF?! What did he think, we decided to go shopping?

After my fourth death :( and umpteenth snarky comment from that "team", I quit. I hooked up almost immediately with another team. We gathered at the mission site, and I noticed it was set for Invincible. I said "Sorry guys, I'm not doing Invincible. Good luck." When they asked me why I told them I had just died four times on a Tenacious mission and didn't want to die any more tonight. They assured me we would be fine and persuaded me to stay, though I didn't have high hopes. Turns out, we managed to pull it off; in fact we did two or three missions at Invincible. We did have a few casualties now and then, but fortunately I wasn't one of them. :) And they were friendly and had a sense of humor throughout. Makes all the difference.

By the way, Stamina rocks!

I don't really mind getting blind invites; if I join and they're doing something I really don't want to do, I can opt out, though I'm not sure that's ever happened. Not 100%, because I can't boot to figure out what's wrong. I do know that she was the last one to use the computer when it was working, that she was downloaded zipped anime videos from fan sites (she finds them faster than I can block them), and it's not the first, nor the second, nor the third (about when I stopped counting) time that she's infected a computer with both virii and spyware via these downloads. Yet, if I break her fingers, I'm in the wrong.

Every time I give my kids a little rope, they find new ways to hang themselves with it.

Well, I obviously am not familiar with your family situation, kids' computer privileges, or the like, but to use a safe-sex analogy (Heh. I can just imagine D_Odd's eyebrow twitch at that phrase in this context) maybe teach her how to scan files for viruses, et cetera, before opening them up? Candid, it's mine she crashed. We all have our own (I upgrade so often - too often, per Ms. D_Odds - that everyone gets my hand-me-downs). She was exercising my ferrets, who reside in the same room as my computer, when she logged on to download her videos.

She has been taught how to scan downloaded files. She doesn't. (Well, maybe for a few days).

She has been told not to download files. She doesn't listen. (Well, maybe for a few days).

We do have Parental Controls on. I see all the sites she gets on and tries to get on and fails. The bulk of them are related to Sims or anime. I'll review a site I don't know and block if appropriate (she's still angry because I stopped all the fanfiction sites). I'll probably stop all downloading, which should anger her as she can't get new stuff for The Sims. I'd still prefer finger-breaking, but that's just the Sicilian in me talking.

How about locking your machine so she can't use it at all, to prevent future problems with your computer? I have mine set to autolock if unattended for more than a few minutes, and passworded to prevent unauthorized access. There are enough computers in the house that nobody but me needs to use mine.

And as for punishments, I would suggest at a minimum disallowing her from any computer use until yours is fixed. I'd also stick her with an additional penalty of lockout from all computer use for a period equal to your outage, and disable all downloading privileges for a further period.

So if it takes you 3 days to fix it, she's locked out of all computer use for 6 days and no downloads for 12... or something like that.

So you are against fingerbreaking, I take it, or anything having to do with needing to dispose of a body?

Looked up the error codes. It was a badly corrupted device driver that would not allow windows to reboot. How bad? I have a striped raid array separated into two partitions, one for windows, the other for everything else...just in case windows gets corrupted. So, I start reinstalling windows, get up to the first reboot and BLAM, same error message. This happens before windows boots, and it wouldn't boot into safe mode either, so it was something vital. Ended up having to delete my partitions, reformat and repartition the drive and start from scratch.

As she is boneheaded about downloading, I stiffened the parental controls to disallow it without explicit permission. Applies to every computer.

Not going to restrict her from the computer completely. As you may recall from my frequently referencing them, my computer is in the same room as my ferrets. She helps me be giving them out-of-cage exercise time. The more, the better. The computer gives her something to do while in the room.

Back to CoH: Jim Beam dinged 39 and got a slew of new contacts. Envoy and Terra are toast. Thanks to Serana, Volt Valkyrie and Star Lighter on the Terra mission, and Thermocline, Eliza Bennet, and Star Lighter on the Envoy mission. Now to take on Star Lighter's Envoy mission, and to work off the accumulated debt.

ERG-1 is more than halfway through level 31 and Nova is on the horizon. Blue Genesis needs help getting from level 18 to 24. Two wimpy attacks are s l o w going.

03-22-2005, 05:04 PM
Changes that Affect both PvE and PvP:

o Improved Max Stealth capability (High stealthy powers like Superior Invisibility can now better protect against foes with high Perception, like Snipers).

o Villains can now knock you back, instead of just knocking you down.
o Removed the base -30% Damage Resistance debuff from Kheldians and decreased their base HP by 12.5% (this gives them an effective net increase in HP).

o Increased Kheldians Base Range Damage. This gives them 4% less base damage than Defenders when solo.
o Increased the Damage Bonus Kheldians get from the appropriate teammates to +20% each. This makes their damage equivalent to Blasters with 3 teammates of the appropriate archetype, and +50% greater damage than Blasters with 7 teammates of the appropriate archetype.

Which is not, as one might think, better than "R U healer?"

The reason being that the latter case allows you to instantly classify the person as an asshat, while "Are you an Empath" holds out the tiny sliver of hope that the person might, just might, realize that defenders other than empaths have something to offer.

The other day I was playing with a RL friend and we had the misfortune of having one of the aforementioned asshats on the team. This kid (I suspect it was a kid, though of course idiocy knows no age) was blatantly trying to pick a fight with my friend, who was playing a force field defender. Asshat was saying things like "ff defenders are useless" and "we need a real defender" and being so relentlessly and pointlessly rude that I kicked him from the team.

On an unrelated note, now that Jingo Belle is level 30 I'm finding myself kind of bored with her. In fact I haven't played her for a few days now. It's not much fun when it takes an insanely long time to accomplish anything, like hours and hours just to fill one or two bubbles. Instead, my friend, my SO and I have been playing brand new characters we created in Champion for the purpose of playing together. (My SO was visiting family and loaded his own CoH account onto their computer; now that he's home we're trying to figure out a way to play at the same time short of buying another computer and installing a second cable hookup. One of us could use our friend's computer, but then he wouldn't be able to join us). Anyway, I had forgotten how much fun the lower levels are. Anyone else get character burnout? If so, at what level did it strike?

Dangerosa
03-29-2005, 10:48 AM
Eliza has been sitting in the 30s forever. She does level relatively fast, as she basically follows TC around, and he is several levels above her. For as little as I've played her, she probably has more levels per hour than the majority of characters. Eliza seldom sees any villians in colors other than purple. Being a defender, she doesn't get a lot of aggro and I can play her for hours without ever using her blast. But being a defender, I basically only bring her around when someone says "we could use Eliza." She doesn't solo well.

I find a hump at 12-14 - its SO tedious at those levels without anyway to move fast.

Eyre is at 32 or 33. She is still fun to play, but yep - takes a while to level and so I'm bringing out Dangerosa more often now, who is 14 - over the travel power hump and still in the "I'll get a new power in a few hours" stage.

I will lose interest in an alt when I have difficulty finishing missions for a while - when I can't find a team and can't solo any mission I have, for instance. My Justice Server Controller is in that position.

But Eternal Ninja and White-Russian never really run into that problem, so I always have someone to play.

What level is your controller in Justice? I have a broadsword scrapper in that server called the Jade Blade. He's level 2 at the moment (created him ages ago and never played him) but I could level him up a few times pretty quickly if the disparity is not too great.

I might have one or two other characters in that server, but offhand I can't think of who.

The reason being that the latter case allows you to instantly classify the person as an asshat, while "Are you an Empath" holds out the tiny sliver of hope that the person might, just might, realize that defenders other than empaths have something to offer.True that. This group - a tank, a couple of scrappers, a controller, and my defender - didn't realize that my empath has other abilities to offer. For example, the tank insisted on using his taunt to pull even though my defender was the one with the best aggro control for pulling. At least the group was good enough that being overrun didn't matter.

Lute Skywatcher, may I ask why your defender had the best aggro control? The subtleties of the game elude me sometimes. Isn't it desirable for the tanker to draw most or all of the aggro on himself so the rest of the team can pick off the foes unmolested? That's the way I usually see it work.

The subtleties of the game elude me sometimes. That's not the "control" I mean. :) Isn't it desirable for the tanker to draw most or all of the aggro on himself so the rest of the team can pick off the foes unmolested? Not for the initial pull, no, unless the foes are spread out. Normally, a blaster would do the pulling because they don't have to rely on area effects. We didn't have one though, just my empath who could also blast. Taunt has a widespread area of effect; it's good for keeping aggro control but not so much for getting it initially. A bad taunt can easliy result in the team being overrun, which happened frequently on that mission. But, as I said, the team was good enough that such overruns didn't matter.

At one point, the rest of the team was mopping up a group of Council so I didn't have any healing to do. I went over to a trio of Council nearby who were just standing around and put some Tentacles on them. The tank said, "those weren't aggroed."

Bites When Provoked

Yeah, I find my defender (empath/radiation) quite good for pulling. Radiation seems to not generate high aggro, so we usually only end up with one or two mobs off my pulls, versus bundles of them from tanker taunt.

Oh, I love those dark defenders! My mate plays one and wow, they totally kick butt. Shame I'm fond of the empath or I'd recreate her - I don't do random pickups, so I've got nothing to lose by dropping an empath.

But I do find her fun, so she stays.

The one I sometimes have trouble with is my mind control/empath controller. Those Tsoo are resistant bastages - well, the sorcerors and ancestor spirits are, anyway. The others are fine. Get a mission with bunches of sorcs and AS's though, and it gets really troublesome.

If you want to chat with other SDMBers in-game, global chat room "CECIL" is ours. (Shocking, I'm sure.)

If you want to be in our Virtue supergroup, or talk on our message board, http://sdmb.culex.us/ has links to our forum and picture gallery dealybob, and a semi outdated membership list. You're free to chat on our board if you're a Doper, even if you're not a CECILian, I know some folk there don't visit here, and vice versa.

I notice we keep getting a slow influx of random Dopers into our global chat room, and some of those join our SG -- glad to see it happening, nice to have new victims around.

No, I certainly did mean 'victims', with the various TNers around. Everybody's open season to pranks and joking year-round.

I considered starting a new thread, but since this seems to be an all-purpose CoH forum, we might as well keep it going.

I'm looking for people to play with and to possibly join my impending super group in Champion. My SO and I share a computer and CoH account. Recently, when he was visiting his parents in California, he loaded CoH onto their computer and established a separate account, and we each created brand new characters to play together in Champion. We also got a friend of ours in on it. Now that he's home we can't play at the same time any more, but I'd like to keep playing those characters. Of course I realize there's nothing stopping me, and I intend to continue doing so. But I think it would be extra fun to have some semi-regular playmates that I sort of know. I realize not many of you have characters in Champion, so consider this an invitation to make some. Can't have too many alts, right? ;)

The SG I belong to in Virtue, the Guardians of the Golden Age, requires a good costume and a correctly spelled and punctuated name for membership. Those criteria have proven to be extremely reliable indicators of a player's maturity, intelligence, and demeanor. I swear some of those kids out there just hit the "Random" button when creating their costumes, and if the name they want is taken, they just insert incongruous apostrophes and numbers and what not rather than coming up with something creative. And if I see one more electrical blaster named "Lightening" something-or-other I'm going to hurt myself. So in the spirit of the GOTGA, I'm thinking of calling my SG the Fashion Police. (I'm not married to that name, so if anyone who wants to join me has another idea I'd be open to it). Of course, Dopers will automatically qualify for membership, even ones I've never actually played with, since I know the kind of folks you are.

My characters in Champion, all under level 10, are as follows:

Coldzone -- ice/ice blaster
Shatterstrike -- mace/invul tanker
Heliocentric -- fire/fire blaster (recently won second place in a costume contest for one million influence :) )
Tigirl -- claws/regen scrapper
Shock Tactic -- elec/elec blaster
Geodynamic -- earth/storm controller
Star Marshal -- ff/energy defender
Dr. Optic -- illusion/empathy controller (recently won first place in a costume contest for two million influence -- go me!)

So if any of you play on Champion, or you decide to start doing so, look for me. Also, my Global name is @Nordic.

I wonder if anyone has some words of wisdom on how to play Geodynamic, 'cause I'm just having a heck of a time. My powers are Stone Prison, Stone Cages, Quicksand, Gale and O2 boost. I've got virtually no damage and no defense, and this is probably the squishiest character I've ever played. Soloing is pretty much out of the question. My main contribution to teams is to immobilize the bad guys in Stone Cages, but that makes them all shoot at me at once, so doing that is essentially committing suicide. Trapping them one by one in Stone Prisons is time-consuming and not very useful.

I recently created an electric/electric blaster on Virtue. His name is Howie Sparks but he goes by "Phasenleitung", which is approximately "live wire" in German; his story is that he was born on an Army base there.

Phase is one of three toons whose background has something to do with the Army. There's also Major Russ Green, aka "Maj Green Beret", formerly with Special Forces and currently a Reservist. The Major's story is that he was one of several soldiers who were called in to help fend off the Rikti invasion and has since returned to help keep the peace. He's a MA/SR Scrapper, BTW.

Along with Russ is his "little" brother Hugh, aka "GreenMonster", whose huge proportions are due to a supersoldier project that worked a little too well.

I think I may already have a character on Champion -- Dangerosa and I have some characters on one other server that we let our son play (he's 6, so needs supervision). If not, I can create one, and swap over if not in the middle of something on Virtue.

I'm looking for people to play with and to possibly join my impending super group in Champion.I used to play on Virtue when the game came out and CECIL started (Mother Marie) but got burnt out after a bit. Kind of back into the game and playing on Champion so I'll have to look you up. So far I've just soloed a katana/SR scrapper to 13 (should be 14 next time I play) and am having a good time of it but I've avoided grouping so far because I hardly recall what to do most of the time or even grouping commands (just re-discovered the follow command last night when I soloed the Frostfire mission and had to chase bad guys over giant patches of ice).

Scrapper is named Override B-1 and is a knock-off of Oasis from the Sluggy Freelance online comic. Normally I'd cringe at making a knock-off but I actually made her as a "Let's see how good I can do this" curiousity, turned out to enjoy playing and at lvl 3 someone gave me 100k influence to do a transfer for them. That kind of sold me on keeping her :D If nothing else, I haven't gotten any hate tells like when I tried to make an original claw scrapper who was based off of being a werewolf and got immediately accused of making a Wolverine clone -- disregarding the fact that the only simularity in costume, name, etc was that we both had claws.

It's Test, folks. Test. Many, many changes are not going to go through as planned, if at all. It's happened many times already, where proposed changes are thoroughly shot down, a recent example being Instant Healing and Integration being non-mutual. SS used to have a massive Acc penalty, then a massive Def penalty. Both were revoked, and as the changes to SS and SJ are to affect PVP, but are not effective in doing so, it is extremely likely that the changes will be revoked, and possibly a new, but far lesser detriment put in place. I4 has at least 1, probably 2 good months left of being on Test server. Expect nothing to be in stone by the time it hits release form except for obvious bug fixes and the like.

Just 1 day ago they made a bunch of changes, and the devs typically like 1 to 2 weeks just for testing and feedback, then they try another change and get that out a week later, etc. Many Arena powers are still very broken, either in pure...brokenness, or balance. Many PVE things are being extremely fought against by the community and requires major testing.

Yes, there is a stupid May-based accolade Celebrant for logging in. Even if they put I4 on Live on May 30th, there's going to be a lot of broken powers and terrible server stability needing a few weeks of patches.

Heck, most costumes (not to mention body sliders) are very broken, still. Many new pants clash with your legs, either making parts of your body entirely transparent, or your leg will poke out the back of the pants. The motorcycle jacket option detaches your neck from your body if you do anything other than stand still.

I really, really can't see the pile of bugs as ready for release. And yes, I've been around for all the previous issue releases. Seems they want this one smoother than the other releases. I would imagine they'd just make Celebrant work for whatever month I4 is released in, or release Celebrant itself separately onto Live only. Or just check the logs and reward it later depending on if a character was played in May.

Heck, they want to stop spawn camping in Arena. Nothing's been put on Test yet for that. They want to prevent small matches from starting up on the huge maps, which they've only done vice versa. They haven't tested badge-awarding tournaments yet, which definitely must be done before it goes Live, as that could easily go awry. They can't even award badges for matches until they fix spawn camping and map sizes, let alone power/AT/Hamidon enhancement balancing.

The state it's in had better darn well not be ready for release.
