The familiar wooden 'plop' of a popup blocked by google toolbar.

The laughter of toddlers.

"Meow"

The knock at the door which implies an anticipated parcel delivery.

The cracking of ice-cubes when liquid is poured over them.

The sound of rain when you are indoors.

Ditto the laughter of children.

That sound effect from Lost in Space when something suddenly disappeared.

A laser printer "winding up" to print.

The Enterprise's phasers from the old Trek.

The sound the disc drawer on my Panasonic DVD recorder makes when it closes.

-The creepy sound effect used in the movie Assassins, right after...

...Stallone says "I told you to wait" to Julianne Moore when she runs back to her apartment.

They used that one on the "Dennis the Menace" cartoon, a lot.

Anyway...

-The sound of my CRT monitor powering up.

-Robocop's footsteps.

-Zeppelin engines.

That reminds me of a smell I like. Namely that of a several-week-old pine tree in the middle of town.

Purring cats.

The way my husband says, "Whatchu doin'?"

The way my sister deliberately mispronounces my name.

Rachmaninov.

The rolling ball noise on Zuma.

The noises by an old pinball machine that used to be in the Columbus airport:

"Lionman! Lionman! Bwahaha!"
"Go through the tunnel."

The "hiya!" frog from the isp commercial.

All of the sound effects from the old Mac game "Crystal Quest." Boing! Boing! B-boing! Blebbem. Blebbem.

And the sound of Mario shooting fireballs.

A train going through at night.

The crack of a soda can opening.

The riffling of pages on an old book, where the edges are worn soft.

My toddler's latest sentence.

"In the not too distant future..."

The noises by an old pinball machine that used to be in the Columbus airport:

There was a pinball game I played in the 70s: Williams' World Cup. When you got the full bonus with the 5x multiplier, it made a cool "warp" sound after the ball was played out. I also liked the sound the ball made when the kicker slammed it against the underside of the glass.

FSSSHHH!! -- the sound of freshly poured Coke fizzing over ice

FWOOF -- the sound of the furnace kicking in on a blustery winter day. Nothing says security like that sound.

YOWP! -- The funny noise our dogs make sometimes when they yawn.

HNGGGG, HNGGGG -- The sound one dog in particular makes in the morning when she's snuggled in the bed between us. It's a sound of utter contentment.

"Happy Modem Noise" -- I have no idea how to spell it, but you know what I mean: the handshaking noise that means your modem is working. I keep it turned on so I can hear it. A new-computer-user friend of mine was over once when I was dialing up and said, "What is that horrible noise?" but I explained why it makes me happy.

The sound of the car pulling in when Mr. S comes home from work, and the accompanying joyous barking of the dogs (in case I missed it).

FWOOOOOOOoOooOoooOooooooooooOOoOOoOOOoooooommmmm

The sound of a data center with a couple hundred racks of servers powering down after someone turned off the (really big) UPS in an attempt to silence the alarm, which was obnoxiously beeping due to an in-progress generator test.

It happened where I worked, and I would have LOVED to have been there to hear it. I can only imagine. If I ever retire, and they forget to revoke my access after I've left... ;)

Hard rainfall on a tin roof.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The somehow 'lazy" drone of a small plane tootling through a bright summer sky.

The "talk-y, groan-y, growl-y" whine my dog uses to try to tell me something. (I need some water talky groany growly growl and hit the cupboard below the sink repeatedly with front paws. and so on).

Crackling fire.

The bus engine as it rounds the corner when I've been waiting for it for 15 minutes in minus 5 degree weather ;D

The Adaware 'nasty found' splat..not a sound I want to hear but perfect for what it is.

The Protoss Observer in StarCraft..a just barely unintelligible voice

The tone at the end of a Motorola Securenet encrypted transmission..ok, that's geeky.

Airliner engines reversing upon landing..finally arrived and safely.

Stepping on a dried ice puddle with nothing under it..a sort of hollow, glassy breaking sound.

1968 superstock Hemi Dart starting..hard to believe those were factory equipped.

The bassy, descending tone when Obi-Wan powers down the tractor beam in Star Wars.

An interception in Tecmo Bowl for NES.

The organ rhythm intro in Green Onions.

The opening choral 'Ahhhh..' in the Simpsons theme.

The little, wet plop when Ferris's sister tosses Mr. Rooney's wallet at the end of Ferris Beuller's Day Off.

The cacaphony of trains rolling across the tracks...even model trains...

The "thhh' thound my two-year old daughter makes when she puts her tongue between her teeth and says "thome" (some) or "juithe" (juice).

A burbly wet exhaust growl on a power boat...

The racheting sound of ratchet tools...

Cows mooing in the distance.
Horses whinnying in the distance.
Coyotes coyote-ing in the distance.
Popping packing material bubbles (so long as I'm the one doing the popping.)
Distant trains very late at night.
The "ya-reeep" sound labradors make when yawning.
And, of course, the Hypno-toad sound effect.

As far as smells, nothing beats the fragrance of sagebrush after a heavy rain (and, on the opposite end of the scale, I have a thing for the aroma of tire stores --- ahh, petroleum.)

Ringo's drums on Abbey Road - a sound not achieved before or since.

My wife's voice.

The "maow" our kitty Phoebe makes when she announces her presence in the room.

My 2 yr old sons's delighted laughter. Nothing comes close.

The soprano in Mozart's Solemn Vespers, although I suspect music is a little off topic in this thread.

The sound of turbine engines spooling up.

A low altitude pass by a flight of two F-4 Phantoms just below Mach 1 on full afterburners. Now that's the sound of power.

Hydraulics / servo-motors that open doors and ship hatches on Sci-Fi shows.

The crunch of feet on dry snow when it's really cold.

A door closing softly on a Mercedes.

My reserve chute crisply snapping open.

The whirrthud of my C64's 1581 disk drive loading up a game. I played some games so much I could almost mimic the "load sounds" for each one.

Anybody laughing hysterically. There used to be a commercial for Whose Line that consisted solely of Drew Carey laughing. By the end of the commercial, I was laughing, too. There's also the America's Funniest Home Videos where the guy makes his quintuplets laugh. Funniest clip, ever.

The sound of laying on the grass in late June; lawnmowers, airplanes, kids playing, dogs barking, birds chirping; all commingled into one great symphony of summertime bliss.

The sound of a man two nanoseconds before climax.

Yes, a truly potent, virile sound. Man, it breaks me up every time I hear it.

But I also like lightsabers dueling, the super-ominous sound of a shotgun being cocked, train horns in the distance, the doppler-effect sound of a railroad crossing bell heard from within the train, and most classic cartoon sound effects.

Girls laughing (makes me melt!)

Any purr, mew, meep, chirp, maow, meow, and squeak from cats and kittens (I'm a sucker for talkative cats)

Twangy guitar played through a reverb-heavy amp, particularly that surf/rockabilly/spy movie soundtrack sound.

Saxophones playing just about anything (that's why I play one)

Muted trumpet playing in a minor key

Hammond B-3 organ (pure joy, whether it's in a jazz, soul, or gospel context)

Girls singing (especially Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Neko Case, or Jenny Lewis, but almost any female voice singing sounds lovely)

Afternoon rainstorms, while I'm inside near a window

The sound of clinking silverware and glasses and eating, accompanied by the lack of talking, when you've gotten friends together to share a good meal

Girls moaning (in the good way)

I forgot to mention the sound the robots made on the old Transformers cartoon when they'd transform into vehicles, that "chk-chk-chk" sound. I can't pick up one of the old toys without making that sound!

Some of the older Nintendo and Super Nintendo games have really distinct sounds that make me smile, like the Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda games.

Food cooking, especially meat on a barbecue grill.

My very favorite sound is a baby sucking on the bottle (or breast), making that delicious little "mnh," "mnh," sound, half-moan, half-swallow. I love the way the little line between their eyes smoothes out, and their eyes half close with bliss, too. Can't imagine being that happy any more! :p

I also love these sounds:

rain hitting the roof
rumble of distant thunder
toddlers belly-laughing
my parents' voices
my eldest daughter saying "Mama!" when she's excited
my youngest saying, "I love you, Mama"
the sound of wind sighing through the Mouse's Tank trail in the Valley of Fire
voices with Deep South drawls, especially Mississippi drawls
real British accents
the pop of bubble wrap

In case you want to see the episode that's from, it's a game of sound effects in which two women from the audience have to supply sounds for Ryan and Colin (who try to cue the women for sounds). They mention a duck and the women makes a duck sound. Then Ryan cues an elephant and the woman makes the same duck sound. I've seen it 2 or 3 times and it still cracks me up. That instantly reminds me of the family fiat filling the whole terraced street I grew up on with opaque smoke every single morning. We as kids were first introduced to that fiat in our garage, where I mistook it for a cool hip ford escort. The pride was short-lived. How sad it is to know that the family car is an embarrasment at such a young age.
