Coined currency

How does the U.S. Mint go about circulating currency after coining it? Does it go to the federal government?

It goes to banks. Banks cull worn bills, and exchange them for new ones.

Specifically they go to Federal Reserve Banks. When a regular old bank needs some new coins, they order some and an armored truck rolls up with a whole lot of new coins.

The Federal Reserve distributes both new bills and new coins, but they don't make either of them.
