View Full Version : Help me identify this plant

First off, sorry I don't have a picture, but here's a description of the plant: The plant is about 2.5 feet tall, has an one upward shoot that looks very tropical (kind of like a palm tree), has long and thin green leaves that streth down from the top about 3-4 feet, and at the base it has what appears to be a coconut with the shoot coming out of it. It really does look like a coconut with something growing out of it, but can this be? It has driven me and my coworkers crazy trying to figure out what it really is.
Thanks for your help.

Can you take a digital photo of it? That would help a lot. Either that or smoke it and let us know what happens.

Why would smoking it help figure anything out? And to your first question: no, I can't take a picture of it b/c I'm at work and I don't have DC anyway.

It probably is actually a coconut palm - not necessarily the same species as fairground 'I've got a luvverly bunch of'-type coconuts, but probably a cocoid palm of some description; they are quite commonly sold as houseplants with the nut very much visible, half-buried.
It may not look quite like the coconuts that you're used to seeing because it will still be in its fibrous outer shell (the bit that is normally removed to make coir/matting, leaving the nut with only a few wispy fibres).

How about Pony Tail Palm (http://www.botanicus.com/BotanicusWNY/products/live_plants/exotic/ponytail_palm/body_ponytail_palm.html) . Not a true palm, but it sounds like what you're talking about.
