View Full Version : What's the largest number of vehicles your family has had at one time?

In beckwall's MPSIMS thread, zenith said there are advantages to having spare cars. That got me to thinking about the collection me and my dad had. It was like we had a used car lot!
How many motor vehicles (i.e., any vehicle powered by an engine; not bicycles) have you and your family had at one time, and what were they?
Here's my list from the mid-1980s:
1966 MGB
1977 MGB
1977 MGB
1977½ Porsche 924
1972 Ford Courier pick-up
1970 Ford Thunderbird coupé
1963 (?) Plymouth station wagon
1948 Willys CJ2A Jeep
1971 Honda CL 100
1973 Yamaha LT2 100 Enduro
1976 Yamaha DT1 250 Enduro
1976 Yamaha DT1 250 Enduro
1970 Cessna 172 Skyhawk
1968 Cessna 182 Skylane
Fourteen vehicles between two people!
I got the '66 MGB from my mom. I got it running after high school and drove it a lot in the '80s. The second MGB was cheap, so we got it as a 'spare'. The third was cheap and had overdrive. Couldn't resist. The 100 Enduro was my first bike, and dad got the used Honda so he could ride with me. (The '64 Yamaha 80's case broke, and it was long gone.) I outgrew the 100, so dad and I got a pair of 250s. Dad had a Toyota pick-up, but I totalled it (and my knees) in a head-on collision so he got the Courier. My uncle had the old T-bird, and it was 'like new'; so we took it off his hands. Dad and I were in the Civil Air Patrol. They had an auction, and he got the old Plymouth for $123.45. The Air Force Blue paint was faded and the upholstery was trashed, but the body was stout and the doors clicked shut nicely. Too good a deal to pass up. I got the Willys because we lived in the desert, and it was fun to bounce around in on the dirt roads. The Porsche was too sexy for my young eyes, so I got my first used-car loan and had gobs of fun in it. Dad bought the Skyhawk after the moving company smashed the BD-5 he was building. It was six years old when he got it, and it cost $10,200. Good luck finding a decent 1970 Cessna 172 for under $40,000 today! I learned to fly in that plane. The 172 wasn't fast enough, so dad bought the 182.
So you see, there were reasons (some good, some not so good) for all of the vehicles. They just seemed to accumulate.

Between two and four, depending on how you want to define the term 'own'. My parents themselves have two vehicles--one for Mom to drive (currently a 2004 Chevy Epica) and Dad's '69 Buick Century that hasn't moved from the basement in over a decade. Dad drives his work vehicle (currently a late 90s GMC Sonoma), which is owned by the business, which is in turn owned by my parents. The forth car is what the hired hand drives, also owned by the business. Not sure what the make and model is, not that I care.
So we don't really have any spare cars, especially when you consider that I don't have one (not that I need one), but we have enough to get us around. Dad has been fixing up the Buick, so maybe I'll get to drive it sometime before I finish university.

Ok, not fair, you started this and are already the winner. :p
My siblings and I were pretty close agewise, so there were 3 of us licensed teenagers living at home with mom and dad in the 80s. At one point, we looked kinda like a P.O.S. car lot, too. It was really brought home the time we hosted a European exchange student for the weekend who was utterly blown away, hey we don't gots public transportation here in Motor City!
It's to far back for me to remember specifics but:
1976 Gremlin (non-functioning but I had hope!)
1979 Rabbit (my functioning vehicle)
197? rusted Ford Econoline (Dad's work van)
1982 Chrysler (Mom's official car)
197? Ford pickup (Dad's hunting truck with camper)
197? Nova (sis)
198? Chevy Cavalier (sis)
1963 classic convertible Dad was restoring.
I'm single and bought a new Expedition in November, didn't turn in my ten year old Ranger or sell it yet. Thru the snow I drove the 4w of course but since it's warmed up I've been switching between them. For what I'd get for a ten year old pickup it seems hardly worth the hassle of selling it, and it's nice to have a truck around for messier cargo. Considering it's listed as my primary vehicle and my new one isn't, the insurance is a pittance more than just having the new one alone. Feels weird owning two, but it's nice having a spare when someone in the family needs it.

I have to disqualify myself. My father has owned a wrecking yard for years so it is possible that when I was a kid we had access to a couple hundred cars at one time. When I drove race cars I always had 20 to 30 cars available for new race cars or parts. My wife and I are down to 3 vehicles now, my Toyota pickup, her Ford Taurus and my, errr, our 66 GTO. Now that the goat is all but finished, I have been eyeballing a 64 Chevelle that a neighbor is selling.

What don't really go on that list are the ones we have now, paying insurance on, and rarely use.
3 motorcycles.
1 pickup
1 car
1 blazer
1 warwagon
1 bulldozer (not driven to the store much)
It would be nice to pare down a bit, but we just can't figure out which ones.

Ok, my father's place tends to be the repository of vehicles for the family so here's what he's got laying around at the moment.
Chevy Impala ( late model, the main car)
Chevy 4x4 pickup (the main truck, has a plow)
two farmall cub tractors (one spare, one for parts, I can't tell which is which)
Ford short body schoolbus (the party wagon, one sober driver for 15 drunks)
Rambler Rebel (waiting to be fixed, five years and counting)
MGB (waiting to be fixed, ten years and counting)
54 ford pickup (the retired truck)
48 ford pickup (another project, two decades now with no progress)
1980 yamaha 650 motorcycle (it runs, nobody there rides at the moment)
The Jeep (year and model are unkown due to a lack or original parts, this is the retired plow vehicle and has no working lights, no working brakes, [just drop the plow to stop] no doors, no roof, few body panels, and a cable for the clutch.)
On top of this are somewhere between two and half a dozen riding lawn mowers depending on how much of the vehicle has to be there to be counted.

The most we ever had as a family was four. The odd thing, though, was that at one time 3 of them were Toyota Tercels. The Nissan Altima looked decidedly out of place in our driveway when all the kids were home!
Now it's a Mazda 3 Sport, a VW Golf, a Toyota Echo and my car, the Last of the Tercels. Only the owners of the first 3 live together, I live out-of-province.

Too many. I'm sure Cheez_Whia will be in here to elaborate on the predilictions of the one responsible for half of my genetics. IIRC, it included (but was certainly not limited to) a VW Bus, a Beetle, a Fiat (I believe a major point of contention family-wide), an Audi, and a few others.
ATM there are two Hondas (A Civic and Accord), a Saturn station wagon, a 70's Chevy truck, a Ford LTD station wagon, a 70's Thunderbird, a 1979 Toyota Corolla, and a 1993 Plymouth Sundance (also known as FrankenCar, The Bruinmobile, and The Millenium Falcon - it is a legendary car, and will probably have a eulogy soon). FWIW, there are three seperate families living here and used to be four. The last two cars are ours. The first two belong to my sister in law and her husband. The truck, Saturn and T-bird are my husband's parents, and the LTD (AKA the BandWagon) belongs to my husband's sister's boyfriend who was also the bassist in my husband's band. They moved, the car stayed.
Phew! I bet that was WAY more than you wanted to know!
Oh and we have a dirtbike and will soon (err, sometime before we die, anyways) have a new crotch-rocket. And I want an old Triumph. And I'm gonna get it, too!

Jesus, 14 at once is a bit excessive.
I think 5 at once. I have 3 brothers and we all lived at home and we all had cars
1996 Ford Taurus (moms)
1977 Ford F-150 (dads spare truck)
1996 Geo Metro (older brothers)
1995 Dodge Neon (younger brothers)
1995 Ford Taurus (mine)
I thought there was a 6th car, but I guess not.
Right now my parents have 4 cars between the two of them, the same 96 taurus, 96 metro as well as a mini-van and another truck to replace the F-150.

My memory is a little hazy, but at one time my dad had the following collection.
2 Harley Davidsons
2 Malibus
3 Corvairs ('65, '62, and um...'64)
1 Suzuki Sidekick ('92) (this was actually mine)
1 Dodge Neon ('96)
1 Dodge Ram ('98)
1 Jeep Cherokee ('76)
1 Scout

The most is 4.
My Dad had bought a newer Volvo 940 estate before he was able to sell on the old 740. At the same time he had an old bike (which I think was roadworthy, almost) and my Mum had her small Renault Clio.

Man, I came in here thinking I would do good, since I grew up on a ranch and had a lot of "vehicles", but you guys win. Just for posterity, the most vehicles I can remember are
White 4-door Ford pickup
Brown early 80's lincoln
white 81 VW rabbit
Green ancient chevy truck
red gmc truck, ran well but had no doors, or glass, had been in rollover accident
Red Rosie, our 1950's dumptruck
2 tractors with hydraulic lifts. One had a cab and the hydraulic lift part was permanent, and the other did not have a cab and you could take the lifts on and off
2 swathers (sp?)
3 motorcycles, various vintages and makes that I don't remember
13 vehicles, all running, these were for a working ranch. I don't suppose wheel lines count, while technically they were motor powered, they weren't exactly fast or stearable.
This does not count the vehicles owned by the hired help, while they were used for ranch business, they did not belong to the family.

OK, let's see if I can remember the max load of vehicles...
1950 Cadillac deVille
1956 Oldsmobile
1966 VW Transporter sans engine
1966 Chevy truck that used vise grips in place of a door handle
1972 Ford truck
1965 VW squareback
1971 Audi 100
A Honda 90 trailbike
2 3-wheel atvs
CZ motorcycle
And the family monstrosity you mention wasn't a Fiat, it was something French that escapes me at the moment. Your Aunt Cynthia called it "The Silver Bird" because the seats were all upholstered in duct tape.

2004 Saturn Ion

1963 Ford Fire truck

Counting myself with my immediate family (since it seems I'll be moving back in soon and I'll be keeping my car at their house):
Cars:
Toyota Prius (mine)
Toyota Prius (everybody's, mainly used by my brother and sister)
Mercedes SL500 (dad's)
BMW motorcycle (dad's, dunno what model)
Mini convertible (mom's)
Chevrolet Suburban (for use when necessary-towing trailers, tailgating, carrying a lot of people, etc.);
1958 VW Beetle (not driven)
1971 VW Beetle convertible (Not driven--my dad's been restoring it for my mom since the early '90s. He swears he'll finish it once he retires and has the time.)
Boats:
46' Hunter sailboat (given that we often spend more time motoring than not, I feel this is fair game)
Apparently they're about to purchase a small motor boat with a catamaran design for when they want to get around quicker on the water.
So that's...9, soon to be 10. Most of it's not strictly necessary, but the truth is that it all does get used frequently. Well, except for the VWs, one of which will probably be sold in the near future.

I think sailboats count. They're not motor vehicles, but I think they fit with the purposes of this thread. I specified motor vehicles so that people wouldn't include bicycles, kayaks, canoes, skateboards, Razor scooters, Segways (which do have a motor), etc.

Right now, between my mom and my two brothers, they have a 1940s car, two pickups, an old Renault, 66 Chevy van, Ford Galaxie, two Subarus (1970s, maybe), Beetle, Austin-Healey Sprite, Chevy Cavalier, Mercury Sable, and a tractor. That's 13. But I might be leaving something out.
And that's not enough--my brother wants a double-decker bus. He also wants to make a motorized bicycle. I think his true calling is to run a junkyard.

2 bicycles

:D Only if it is one of those boxy monstrosities! The Sausage Creature remembered it as a Fiat. You could take 4 adults and 4 kids anywhere in it (before seatbelt laws). IIRC, my SiL used to have trouble with the oil dipstick shooting out of the engine block when it would backfire. And the seats were...Completely. Covered. With. Duct. Tape.

:D Only if it is one of those boxy monstrosities! It is very boxy! It sounds like it's smaller than The Original Silver Bird, though. Maybe I'll call it "Silver Bird Two." Or "Big Heap of Rust."
We had one at a time. Datsun B210 (orange, smallest car alive), then a white Nissan Sentra 2-door, then a red Nissan Sentra 2-door. A tight squeeze once my brother and I were teenagers.
My father was the only one of us who had a license so he was the only one who needed a car.
(I got my license at 29 and now I have one car. My brother has none and Mom still doesn't drive.)

We've had as many as 5.
Right now we've got a 2002 Aztek and a 1997 Ranger with a capped box.
Our '91 Grand Caravan went to our daughter. We borrow it back whenever we need to haul something too bulky for our regular vehicles or too messy. (The van's carpets are a bit thin and have several indelible stains; can't hurt 'em any more.)
Just sold rid of a '79 Caprice and our youngest son took a '95 Cavalier off our hands in February.
