View Full Version : Welcome Mississippienne to Baltimore Dopefest
GingerOfTheNorth
04-16-2005, 01:12 PM
Agent Foxtrot and I have pinned down May 21 as the day of the dopefest to welcome Mississippienne to Baltimore. Weirddave and I will be holding this 'fest at our place in Dundalk, starting at around 2:00 pm and going through dinner and into the evening.
Everyone's invited - it'll be kid friendly, so bring them too. I think we'll do it like our Dope The Halls and do a sort of pot-luck thing, but we'll provide burgers and hotdogs; we'll ask everyone to bring something. We've got a houseful of liquor that we never drink, but beer and mix will be BYOB.
Who's in?

I'll have to let you know a little closer to the date. My spousal unit is facing shoulder surgery, but we don't know when yet. And this on top of the kid's surgery. I refuse to go to a doctor myself lest he find something that needs to be removed...

::Scott walks in from Mississippienne is coming to Baltimore! (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=6064900) singing to the tune of Camptown Races., "“Horse You Came In On” bar in Fells Point, do-dah, do-sah dah, all the day of May 5 long. Build a race track five miles long, all the do-dah day." Then he stops dead in his tracks.::
Wait, did you say the he 21st, in Dundalk? :( I might not be able to make it. I'll have to check. Saturdays aren't good for me, usually, but I'll have to see about this one.
Oh, and in the old thread, the following was said:Congrats to the both of you!
And also, damn you for moving to Baltimore! Move to Kansas instead!Just my two cents, I think the public schools in Baltimore are horrible. I taught Summer School one summer, and......Ugh. Unless you want to enroll your kids in a private school, when/if you have kids, I would advice you to get the heck out of Baltimore.
Wait, you're in Dundalk? Besides the fact that Ollies (http://www.olliesbargainoutlet.com/) is fantastic, I have no idea about anything to do with Dundalk. Nevermind my previous advice.

I've been thinking about it and thinking about it, and I think I'm in! My very first Dopefest! I have to be up (and in VA) early Sunday morning, so a Saturday afternoon thing works well for me.
I'll be honest: I'm a little intimidated by the idea of going to someone's home -- and meeting so many Dopers -- when I haven't been at the SDMB for very long. But I'm a social type, and I think I'll be sticking around here for a while, so I may as well jump in! I'll be the new chick nursing a Sam Adams: just wave and give me encouraging smiles every now and then, and I'll be fine. ;)
(Can't I make everyone wear nice big nametags? Pretty please??)
Ginger, I'll e-mail you shortly about directions; I'll be coming from elsewhere in MD. :)

AdamThanks, but I'm just not sure yet. Saturdays are usually very busy for me. The kids have so many activities on the weekends. Plus I work super hard during the week so I don't have to work on weekends. I try to spend as much time as I can with my boys on Saturdays and Sundays since Mom's essentially MIA during the week.

We usually have anywhere from 20-40 people in the house. Make what you make, and when they run out it's too bad for everyone else.
We'll need snackies, side dishes, and byo beer. I don't know yet if we'll be doing burgers and hot dogs, or pit beef. Dave hasn't decided so I don't know. We'll provide pop (soda for you Americans :P) and the main dish.

I will bring veggies and dip, OK?
I recall that your street is adorably narrow - what is your advice about where to park.
GingerOfTheNorth
05-20-2005, 08:08 AM
Wherever you can. You can park on Dundalk Avenue, on our street, or on the street at the other end of our street. There is a small parking lot at the end of our alley, and I'm not sure if you can park there or not. I'm leaning toward yes.

Thanks. Are you feeling better?

There is no possible way I could have felt worse, unless it involved hot pokers to my soft parts. So, yes.

Well, I had planned to bring a tray of snack veggies (see post #70) -- is there room for a second one?

Bring whatever you like. I'll eat tons of veggies.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: I've got burgers (beef and veggie) and buns, and I bought pop. Coke, diet Sprite, Ginger Ale, and (I think) Sprite. If you want something else, bring it.

I'm a Diet Coke drinker, and I suspect there are others, so I'll bring a few bottles (along with the veggies).

UrbanChic (I want to call you Juanita!): we have 'cheese' - that is, processed cheese slices.
I also have Minute Maid Lemonade. And a few stray cans of other stuff left over from Dope-The-Halls at Christmas.

You--and anyone else, really--can call me Juanita.
I'll bring cheese, bottled water, applesauce cakes and an as yet unknown side dish or two.

I'm up for this. But it would be nicer to everyone if you kept it out of reach for the trip up.

Is this because you like hummus and will eat it all or because if you eat the hummus we won't want to be near you? Ginger and Dave have a small back porch where you could be banished if necessary.

If we banish him to the back porch, nobody will get burgers. Urban Chic: You outdo yourself. Thank you so much.
I think we'll start cooking around 3 or so. If we need more burgers, we'll run out for them.b

There will be no banishing necessary. I just like hummus, is all.

What do you guys think of Insalata Caprese--tomato and mozzarrella salad? It's beautiful AND yummy.
Yes, unless someone vehemently objects, I'm going to bring one.

Do you enjoy olives and a good, crusty bread? If so, I could bring a few loaves to accompany a bright tapanade.

Just for the record, we shan't be able to attend - an old, old friend is coming into town on Saturday. Too much stuff happens at once.

Alrighty. The house is about as clean as it's going to get, we've got ice and mixers, and I'm not going to cut the watermelon until there are people here.

We're going to be leaving here in the next ten minutes or so, only stopping on the way down to pick up some beer. We should be there by about 1:30.

Next time, I'll bring a sample of what I consider hot chili!

Glad you liked it, though. It's nice to get outside validation.

After following the intrepid and most excellent navigator known as Agent Foxtrot, I made it home. If neither he nor Mississippienne post to this thread in the next hour, I'm going to form a search party. Who's with me?
As most of you know, I'm anti-smiley, but I weren't, I'd be inserting a winking smiley right...about...now.
Thanks for having us Weirddave and GingerOfTheNorth. Ian and Jimmy are so adorable. It was wonderful meeting all of you. I really enjoyed talking with your daughter, norinew; she's something special. Angua, wow. It was a great surprise to meet you.
Finally, feel better Weirddave. Or don't. I don't care. (again with the winking smiley business).

Somehow... I think Agent Foxtrot and Mississippienne have better things to do, right about now.
And I'm not anti-smilie, so: ;)

Thanks for the props, Juanita. :) Great dopefest, guys. As usual, Dave and Ginger throw a most excellent shebang. Angua, let us know if you're ever back in the States... we'll take you out for burgers and a stout! Mississippienne says she's coming to Birmingham to eat your chocolate cake ("Every crumb of it!")! F.U. Shakespeare, great discussion on the power of good teachers, and I want to hear you play some blues next time! When are we all doing this again? :D

Didn't get to post last night; by the time we got home and got my oldest daughter's angst hashed out, got the little one tucked in, etc., it was way past my bedtime!
Had a great time! Thanks, Ginger and Dave! It was so neat to meet Dopers I never met before.

Pity, that. Ultrafilter and I gave Angua a ride back to Pentagon City and she asked about you, FCM, and said she would have liked to meet you.
I had a lovely time. It was nice to talk to Dopers old and new, and Ra, who has certainly achieved honorary Doper status by now.
Speaking of Ra, you and the other guys on the front porch: Ixnay on the iamondday eisthay. OK?
