I joined in June 2001. I'm looking at other posters who joined after this and they are charter members... Did I miss something somewhere? Thanks in advance for any info - Cheers Phil

When did you renew?

Well I subscribed when we went to paid subscriptions - and I renewed this past year, albeit a month late however.

You only retain your Charter Member status while you mantain your paid subscription. Since you let it lapse, you lost your Charter status.

IIRC, there were a couple of beg-fests where people were able to get their charter status back. I also seem to recall that it is a bit of a chore for them to do it. How important is it too you? A well placed grovel may help your cause.

Most people who know me know I'm a charter member. If one day I log on and see it has been changed I'd be psyched! But if it doesn't I'm not too bothered :)

What a nice, balanced, philosophical viewpoint. :)
That'll be quite enough of that kind of talk.
Where's your moral outrage?
Where's your indignant attitude?
Where's the harsh criticism of the mods and admins?
In Og's name, where are the cursewords?
I don't think you'll fit in here very well at all, Phlosphr.

I don't think you'll fit in here very well at all, Phlosphr.Given that this is not the BBQ Pit, it would seem that Phlosphr will not merely fit in, but avoid banning.

Phlosphr, have you been living in a cave recently? There were 2 or 3 threads in this forum not too long back where a lot of folks had a whine about this very dilemma (including me). The solution was to email a mod directly and explain the situation. Joy will then be delivered unto you in due course.
I emailed TubaDiva and she then greased the relevant palms for me.

We had quite a few folks who let the subscription renewal date come and go and realized pretty quickly they had screwed up. Ed and Jerry gave these people some leeway and let them come back as Charter Members (at full charge, since that part of it couldn't be fixed).
However, all these changes had to be done manually throughout the system, a somewhat long and tedious job for someone who already has their hands full to begin with, so after doing several hundred of these, Jerry said, No More.
And that's where it sits.
Unless there's a change of heart from Jerry and Ed, once you lose your Charter Member status, that's the end of the story.
Sorry.

She also helped me. I'm poor folk but finally found someone to sponser me, albiet
a couple days past the deadline. Tuba understood and took care of it..
"Charter Member" is fine but I always look at the join date to form any opinion of the poster.

Somehow, it doesn't seem fair that I didn't get a month to try the "new all-paid membership" boards like every other "guest" (since Thou Shalt Not Sock) but I also don't get to be a Charter Member. I'd like to add my "WAAH!" to the list, please.
Oh well, I basically paid $15 to keep my post count and user name. Quite a deal if you look at it that way.

Ah well. :smack:
But, I'm getting to do my extra little bit supporting the board, so.

Yes. It's always important to remember that there is no "i" in Phlosphr. He's a true team player.

It puzzles me that anyone cares whether they are listed as a Charter Member or not. I don't take this into account in judging posts or posters. Who does???

But it's looooong. Like it would really nifty if I could be a "Member of the Squadron of Flying Squirrels" or such.
Yes.
Just ignore me.

your humble TubaDivaDo charter members who lapsed for a day or two retain the renewel benefits, or are we stuck paying full price for the rest of our stay here?
Just curious, DESK

You're fine. I think someone, however, needs to uninstall Stick-in-the-Butt 1.0 and download Sense O' Humor 2.0 instead.

IANQED, but I believe you are stuck.
Maybe you missed this in the quote of Tuba's you posted:
Unless there's a change of heart from Jerry and Ed, once you lose your Charter Member status, that's the end of the story.
Being that the reduced rate is part of being a Charter Member, so it looks like, change of hearts aside, you are indeed fixed in at the full price.
"Charter Member" is fine but I always look at the join date to form any opinion of the poster.
Just curious, but what does this mean? Just because someone discovered the board afew years earlier than someone else doesn't mean their opinion is any less valid or less worthy of attention.

Their opinion on what? General knowledge, their specific expertise? Of course not. The culture of the SDMB and nuances of the rules? Someone who's been here longer and/or posted more (which generally implies reading more) DOES know more about the specifics of posting and reading here.

P.S. I can think of an obvious counter to this argument of mine, but this postscript is too small to contain it.

As of the date of this posting, August 8, 2005:
If a lapsed Charter Member got their status changed back to "Charter Member," they're again eligible for renewal at Charter Member rates. If they didn't get in under the wire, probably not.
Now I have no way of knowing what might be coming down the road when it gets to renewal time, it's possible this could change, but right now, if you didn't regain Charter Member status right after you originally lost it, you're probably out of luck.
Sorry.
your humble TubaDiva
I almost lost my charter member status because I went to South Africa as well as had computer problems during the time payment was due. I'm one of those that got my charter member classification back, but had to pay the higher fee. It is my understanding that the lower fee will apply next time, but if not so be it.
I don't look at whether someone is a charter member or not, but it is an indication that you have been able to remain quasi-nonjerkish for a prolonged period. Those that can claim the title of 99er are entitled to be proud of being a member of a unique group, after all.
P.S. I can think of an obvious counter to this argument of mine, but this postscript is too small to contain it.
Somehow I get a feeling that "I represent that remark." :o
Anyway, I will always think of Phlosphr as a charter member in good standing. Maybe this all could be cleared up by sending Ed a box of chocolates.
