There's a bonded pair of swans that spends spring and summer in the Boston Public Garden. They're the Garden's mascot, loved by all. For years, kids have been asking, "Which one's Romeo, and which one's Juliet?" Well, guess what? It's Roberta and Juliet. Yup, they're both girls. (http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/08/12/thou_art_no_romeo/) At least they're in the right state if they want to get married.

In ancient Rome, it was customary to consult an augur before making important decisions. One of these augurs was the Auspex, literally the bird-watcher, a priest who observed the flight and behavior of birds as omens.

The word auspice comes from that.

::Sigh::

Just think: had the gods of ancient Rome been the mainstream religion of today; the gay issue, after a revelation like that, would no longer be a problem for the fundamentalists!

Ahem.

I've been away from you a long time.
I never thought I'd miss you so.
Somehow I feel, your love was real,
Near you I long to be.

The birds are singing, it is song time.
The banjo's strummin' soft and low.
I know that you yearn for me too,
Swanee you're calling me.

:D

That's some swan song you've got there, silenus. It certainly doesn't run afowl of good taste.

The cygnet-to-noise ratio of this thread is surprisingly high. And even the comedians amongst us haven't laid an egg. It may be a featherweight thread now, but maybe us Dopers can cob-ble together something worthy of "Threadspotting" yet.

I'd call them "Roma and Juliet," though. :)

Oh to be back in Boston. The jokes must be running a mile a minute. I wonder if the governor approves or if he's asked for a ballot referendum.

Hah! From Leviticus 11:13-18 (http://bible.gospelcom.net/passage/?search=lev%2011:13-18;&version=9;):

"And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: ...the swan...."

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go see if "Godhatesswans.org" is already taken yet.

There's definitely something queer and fowl going on in Northeast...

Exhibit B: And Tango Makes Three (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0689878451/qid=1120755614/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/103-5314267-0897450?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) a children's book detailing the real-life pair of male penguins in New York's central park zoo who shacked up and made a nest in preparation for the egg-shaped rock that they started caring for...that is untill a zookeeper gave them an orphaned egg from another breeding pair of penguins.

Hmmm.... Penguins, penguins.... Nope, nothing in Leviticus about penguins.

Curses!

Here at Iowa State, we have always had two swans in our lake Lavernne. Their names are Lancelot and Elaine. They are both dudes. When they die, they are replaced by another same sex couple of swans by the same name.
