View Full Version : I pit the thought police, or prison rape is cool

A few months ago I was watching Team America: World Police with someone who got really offended. Not by the language, or the politics, or the blowing up of a bunch of historical landmarks. To most of that she laughed or expressed “Meh”. No she was offended because the Tim Robbins puppet got set on fire.
“That's horrible, they're burning him in effigy. That's wrong!”
Sorry, setting Tim Robbins on fire is wrong (just barely), but setting a Tim Robbins puppet on fire? Comedy gold. And a valid artistic critisism. Of course, some will disagree with me. But they can go fuck themselves. Better yet, they can rape themselves, in prison.
Prison rape is a horrible thing. The dammage done to the victim on a mental/emotional level is probably incomprehensible to those of us lucky enough to have never experienced it. That makes it the perfect thing to wish upon someone when you are righteously enraged. No one (as of yet, anyway) has suggested it is an actual, appropiate punishment for any offense. No one is endorsing legislation to encourage the practice of prison rape. It's just the worst thing currently imaginable. And it's an obvious goto vengence wish when someone has broken a law and are probably going to prison.
In this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=331759) I implied that I wished prison rape upon Eleusis, because I thought he(?) was being an asshat, specifically about this issue, and contextually it fit. Does this mean I think literal Prison rape is what he diserves? Of course not, you literal minded fucknuts. It's a goddamn metaphor. You did something bad, and I hope something bad happens to you, cause you deserve it.
There seems to be a type of person who like to read Pit threads looking for statements they can claim are too over the top. This allows them to chastize the pittor and feel morally superior. Look, all you thought police candy ass whiny brats, what I think and say in a fit of anger on an anonymous message board has little to do with my overall general feelings, and exactly 0 impact on what is going to happen to the people I'm pissed at. But it makes me feel better, so shut the fuck up and stop co-opting other peoples threads , or I will have negative thoughts about you and may suggest you go get raped. Think I mean it? Then you're still fucktards, and you can go shit in you respective hats.

I'm not 100% behind you on this, but I was amused at the idea expressed in the other thread that wishing prison rape on someone was horrible, but wishing that someone lose several limbs in a car accident was okay. Neither are exactly pleasant fates, but if I had to choose between the two of them, I'd probably pick the one that left my body parts more-or-less intact. I mean, you can get over being raped. You can't regrow your legs.

I don't disagree with you. I think people take stuff in the pit waaay too seriously. But I also think if you're going to get into it here you need some thick skin. Let it go and let the literalists go be sour.
And, might I add, you're about to get metaphorically assraped for your rant. I'm not criticizing, just thought I'd warn you. You've been here for all of what...three months? Good luck, and Godspeed.

Hem...Raaaally, this has gone too far. Too FAR I say.
How uncivilized.

Maybe people chastize you because it makes them feel better. And maybe what they say to you on an anonymous message board has little to do with their overall general feelings and has exactly zero impact on what is going to happen to you.

Completely over the top and uncalled for. Do not start insulting panty-heads! What have you got against a guy that wants to pretty himself up? Boxer-breif-ist!
Ahhhh, fuck you.
Oh, come on. If you are going to do a LonsomePolecat (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=6439693&postcount=20), do it right.

Oddly enough, I asked a serious GQ question on this very thing that went largely unanswered: The Missus Wants to Know: Are Head Panties a New Fashion Trend? (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=224746) Anything new on this? duffer? El_Kabong ? parthenokinesis ? Anyone?

You can't regrow your legs.Devil's advocate here. It seems to me that Eleusis is disturbed, for whatever reason, by the idea of prison rape being tossed about thoughtlessly. It is a horrible thing, made even more so by the helplessness of the victim, and the evil intent of the perpetrator. The link Eleusis provided gave me pause.
For some reason, loss of limbs in an auto accident seems more impersonal. Almost an "act of God," if you will.
I agree whloeheartedly with your larger point. I would much prefer a rape to the loss of a limb.

The OP reminded me of this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=140675) from several years ago, which produced quite a lot of interesting discussion and arguments from both sides.

I think what makes people sensitive about this is that some people who read this board have been raped.
Not raped in prison perhaps, but raped.
Those people do not like to have that particular insult thrown about, for fairly obvious reasons.
The way someone who had lost all their limbs in a car accident might not like to hear "I hope you lose all your limbs in a car accident" thrown about.
Ya get me?

My main problem with wishing prison rape on people is that in some people's minds, that somehow makes prison rape OK, an unofficial part of the justice system, and therefore not such a horrible thing IRL.
Wouldn't mind if it happened to Judith Miller a few hundred thousand times during her stint in the can, but I doubt it will.

Perhaps I did not thoroughly read the OP, hence I am a little confused ... was the Tim Robbins puppet prison-raped?

No one will actually own up to it, but I'd imagine many of them are the hardass types who like to obsess about anything that makes things too "cushy" for inmates. "Prison is prison," they'll say. As if it doesn't matter whether society's punishment is civilized, merely that it happens.
Wouldn't mind if it happened to Judith Miller a few hundred thousand times during her stint in the can, but I doubt it will. Now prison rape fantasy, that's another thing entirely. Camille Paglia would no doubt applaud you as an evolved postfeminist male.
Personally, my favorite wish upon an adversary is, "May you be serially torture-murdered."

Not all of us (who have been raped) care. I don't.
And not all who do are people who have been raped.
I don't think it's as simple as saying that the people who get riled up over a non-serious wish that someone get prison raped are 'those people' who have been raped.

catsix honey, I know you don't feel that way, and I'm sorry if you felt that I mis-represented your opinion. I will change that statment to "many of those people" if you prefer.
Many of us do however have a very negative reaction to the word "rape" when used in that sense (which came up in a thread about the use of words which upset people, so I'm not pulling this completely out of my ass), and so do our loved ones and family members.
What I intended to highlight is the fact that for some people prison rape is a bad thing which they can't really relate to, and it's a phrase they can throw around lightly, for others it's a bad thing which they CAN relate to, and for some of us it is a BAD thing we wouldn't wish on our worst enemies because relating to it doesn't even come close.
And there are probably (as you say) groups who I haven't even mentioned in the above paragraph.

Back in the rape the (fictional) rig driver thread, the post that stood out most was the one with the linked poetry (http://www.spr.org/en/survivorpoetry/main.html). I 'tried it on for size' and wasn't all that swayed. I don't know if it's because it sounded like bad Hallmark Greeting Card writing - or the fact prose like thisSo you're filling me now with your masculine power, the seventh to rape me in less than an hour.just shouldn't exist
