I'm pretty sure a web browser (Netscape Navigator, MS Internet Explorer, good ol' Mosaic, etc.) could be written to display text before any graphics had loaded. The fact that they don't is either (A) a conspiracy on the part of internet advertisers, paying secret kickbacks to Netscape and Microsoft, or (B) laziness on the part of their programming staff.

I vote for (B).

You can just turn the graphics off in Internet Explorer, don't know about Netscape. Just turn them back on when you are going to sites where you may need the graphics.

-find a game to play, such as solataire, on your computer while you wait

The ads pay for the site. No ads, no site. I'd say a few seconds wait is a small price to pay for The Straight Dope!

I dont mind waiting while something loads...I mean the whole damn unit FREEZES! the mouse wont mouse, the buttons dont button...the whole bit...I cant read another page, or play solitaire, because the whole thing locks up tighter than...well, never mind.
