Inspired by this auction. ( http://cgi.ebay.com/DKNY-Mens-Leather-Pants-I-Unfortunately-Own_W0QQitemZ8335653541QQcategoryZ57989QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
My feelings about leather pants on men, are similar to the seller's.
So guys, have you or would you ever wear leather pants?
Ladies, are they sexy or cringe inducing?

Sexy when worn by the right person.

Oh, yeah, the right man can definitely make leather pants look good. My husband, for example, looks spectacular in leather pants. (Though, it probably helps that he's a bass player in a rock band, and has hair like Robert Plant.)

I never have, but I do have a long black leather duster that I wear in the winter. Is that as bad?

If the leather pants are black, I think "BDSM". So, any guy in my vincinity wearing black, supple leather pants will need to be prepared to accept a spanking. ;)
In fact, thinking about it now, leather pants on guys fall somewhere between assless pants/chaps and mesh t-shirts. Strangely enough, there are some guys that can really pull off this look.

My friends and I have a rule about leather pants.
Only Jon Bon Jovi is allowed to wear them. Ever.
That is all.

Leather dusters are much more acceptable than leather pants.

The mid-60s-ish guy in my building who's wearing baggy leather pants every time I see him is definitely cringe-inducing.

As the eBay seller so rightly said,
I’ll go so far as to say you either have to be very tough, very gay, or very famous to wear these pants and get away with it.
Or very attractive in a futuristic, goth/punk "I-can-wear-eyeliner-and-get-away-with-it" kind of way. Otherwise, no.

As a guy I would NEVER wear leather pants. I'll leave that to bon jovi and other leftovers from 80s glam rock. Also many people (including myself for some reason) associate leather pants with gay men. I don't know. But then again I would question women with leather pants as well. Not her sexual orientation but fashion sense.
(I have been told I have nice legs though. I didn't even know women looked at mens' legs)

Except for the lace-up lavender ones in the video "Runaway" -- even Jon couldn't make those look good.

I have a pair of leather pants that I wear only when riding my Harley below 50°. I don't care what anybody says about me.

A friend wore leather pants once. Years later we (his best friends of course) still give him shit about it.

As mentioned in the auction, Harley riders are allowed to wear leather pants. As well as, rock stars and pirates.

Depends on the man - I know a certain European scientist with a freakishly large brain who pulls them off quite well.
Otherwise I tend to say no.
It also depends on the pants - the jean style cut is acceptable. The 1980's style poofy ones are just goofy.

I agree with those who say Harely riders, pirates, rock stars: okay. Everyone else: blech!

I've never understood the "assless chaps" phrase. All chaps are "assless." That's kind of the point. If they had asses, they'd be leather pants!
(..or maybe I'm just reacting to a former boyfriend who once found my leather horseback riding chaps and was very concerned I had some weird, secret side!)

I don't think I'd wear them, they don't sound very comfortable. But if any other guy feels good wearing them go for it, I say. I try to avoid thinking along the line that "if they're wearing 'x', then they must be 'y'.

Yeahbit,
what if the particular Harley riders, pirates, and rock stars are overweight middle aged men? It can happen, you know!

I have been peremptorily ordered to wear leather pants by at least two acquaintances. Thus far I have resisted. Quite honestly I think I'd look atrocious.
I do, however, know one rather scatterbrained but perfectly gorgeous twink who, in his leather pants, looks like sex on legs (even more so than normal), so there you go.

Women in leather pants: stunning hot.
Men in leather pants: somewhat repulsive (although it seemed like black guys in the 80's & 90's looked pretty cool in them).
I would wear them for FaerieBeth. ;)

I had a pair in my early '20's when I was trying to be all rock n' roll. As a guitarist in a bunch of bands, I thought I had "the card" to get into that club.
Boy was I wrong - probably the biggest Glamour Don't I have every perpetrated - and their have been plenty.
There are about .5% of the male population who can pull off wearing leather pants. I am clearly not one of them.

There are a few men who are so hot in leather pants, looking at them is like freebasing sex. I don't know any of them; I've only seen them on tv. But they're out there somewhere.

If the man looks good in his leather pants, then yes.
If he has a 34-inch waist, then he's probably close to looking bad in them. I'd prefer a little more meat. :p

i have a pair of leather pants. i'm definitely not gay and i'm definitely not fat or middle aged. i'm 24. i don't always bust them out and they're not even for special occasions. hell, i've never even had any shit from wearing them either. my roommates thought they were cool and the chicks dug it, so yeah.
...and my bellybutton is pierced too. commence with the homosexual insinuations!

Leather pants don't make me think a guy is likely to be gay. But, like FaerieBeth, I do tend to think he probably has an interest in spankings.

If there's anything I learned from the collected works of Joss Whedon, it's that leather pants = evil. So I vote no. Unless you want to look evil, of course.

Colored leather is worse than black or brown. I don't think even a pirate could get away with that.
Jeans that don't fit are cringe-inducing, so leather pants on the wrong body type for their cut would magnify that exponentially by a factor of at least 6.
Great-fitting jeans are hot, so I could see leather pants that fit as being evil-hot.

Depends on the guy wearing them. If he looks like he stepped out of Velvet Goldmine, good. If he looks like he stepped out of an 80s hair video, bad.

I don't know any pirates or rock stars, but I definately think that leather pants are acceptable on men riding motorcycles. But they have to be actually riding the bike when they're wearing the pants. Some guy hopping out of his Camry dressed in leather pants, a Harley shirt and a do-rag looks ridiculous. But the exact same outfit is fine when the dude is on his bike.

An "assless chap" is a UK guy who has laughed his ass off (larfed 'is arse off.)
Long ago, when I had a motorcycle, I had a pair of leather pants to ward off road rash. I sold 'em with the bike.
Leather garments smell bad after a few wearings, and very few cleaners want any part of them. They're cold in the winter, and hot in the summer.

Obviously you all have been missing out on the wonder that is the Ren Faire. Men in leather pants are everywhere, and most of them look pretty damn hot. My bf has a pair of vinyl pants (cooler in the summertime) that he tucks into a pair of floppy knee-high boots... *rrowr*

The kind of leather is also important. Tissue paper-thin "fashion" leather? Bleah.
I've seen pants made from leather better suited for making gloves, and they look bad.
Mentally counts up what's in the closet at home... three pair of chaps, four or five pair of pants... Smells good, too!

Depends on the kind of leather pants.
This kind (http://www.dainese.be/en/outlet_moto/pants/images/zoom/p217.jpg) looks pretty nice. :)
And then there's always leather kilts... (http://www.utilikilts.com/whatsnew-frameset-leather.htm)

I've got a nice ass, so I can make them look nice with a snazzy shirt if I go to a part or something. I've also got a pair of leather zip-off cargo pants that for some reason go well with my Ren Faire garb.
Hey, it was a 2 for 1 sale at Wilson's. The faux snakeskin pleather pants don't leave the bedroom. ;)

Member of a rock band, is one of my stipulations for the wearing of leather pants.
Provided the band has major talent, instead of being cringe-inducing posers.
In general, only he-man bikers, TV action heroes, and street-tough black men (think Shaft) can pull off this suspect look. Wimps, wusses, ectomorphs and Manilow lovers need not apply.
Ditto re: the observations of a dude wearing leather hopping out of a Camry.

A-freakin'-men, sister.
Slight hijack--One night, my girlfriends and I went to a drive-in movie theater in the middle of nowhere, New York. I forgot to get gas on the way there. We saw Freddy vs. Jason(because you can only see horror movies at the drive in, of course), and when we had to start to seriously consider the fact that we were going to run out of gas in the middle of a forest in the middle of the night, we got mildly freaked out. First, we made a list of all the reasons we couldn't die (it wasn't Halloween, none of us were stoned or drunk, we hadn't had premarital sex that evening, we weren't sleeping, and Jamie Lee Curtis was nowhere to be found), and then, we made a list of men who should wear leather pants every day.
We found that list much more diverting.

In a slightly different context to the wearing of leather pants...I wear buckskin leggings (like chaps I suppose) with fringe at powwows and when i speak to schools on Native American things. The leggings are worn with breechclout and moccassins, and a long shirt. I've never had any complaints. Perhaps a few curious looks from teachers that are thinking of a domestic corrolary to the issue of what a Scot wears under the kilt. But then... "hot" isn't really a look that one would go for wearing powwow regalia.
