View Full Version : Poll: Washing hands after using the bathroom

I just read an article (http://www.asm.org/Media/index.asp?bid=38075) where researchers observed that 90% of women and 75% of men wash their hands after using a public restroom. So I thought I'd bring this one to SDMB and add a couple of questions. Let's do it like this:

1) Your sex
2) Your age (or decade, if you prefer)
3) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a public restroom
4) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in someone else's home
5) percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in your own home

Of course, feel free to add your own comments as well. As for me?

1) Male
2) 30
3) 98%, I'd say. I generally only skip this if I'm absent-minded or in a hurry.
4) 90%. If there's an absence of towels or I'm not sure what the towels on the rack were last used for, I may hesitate.
5) 60-70%. I seem to think about this far less at home, and I don't know why.

You left out an important distinction. I would never think of Going Number Two without washing afterwards with soap and water, but with urination it seems far less important (even though Cecil says I should (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_220.html)).

So, for peeing only, my answers are (1) Male (2) 37 (3 & 4) Usually but not always, and often with water but not soap, and (5) Seldom, if my hands look and feel clean already.

3) 100% - I generally try not to use public restrooms, but when I must I have a public restroom ritual. I don't sit on public toilet seats. If they don't flush automatically, I kung-fu flush. I count to 15 when washing my hands with plenty of soap and the hottest water I can stand. If the water doesn't turn off automatically, I use my wrist/arm to turn it off. When I need to get a paper towel to dry them I'll either pull my sleeve down to push the dispenser down (if there is one), or use my elbow. Once my hands are dry I use those paper towels to touch the door handle to open the door, hold the door open with my foot, and then toss the towels in the garbage. Writing it out it seems kind of silly, but it's all second nature by now, it's really not a big deal.
5) 95% - Depends on the person/house or the circumstances.
6) 90% - Since I'm generally the cook or in or around the kitchen, the thought of using the restroom and then touching anything in the kitchen grosses me out. I usually don't wash my hands after using the restroom right before bed time (but again, that depends on the circumstances), or right when I wake up, since I'll be taking a shower anyway.

I wash my hands several times a day anyway, because I'm a hand-cream junkie -- smooth hands are better when I'm sewing -- so I figure I'm covered even if I don't wash 100% of the time after peeing. It might be an hour later, but they'll get washed.

LOL. Usually no.

Believe me, I've been doing it since I was a kid, literally 8 or 9 or younger. I've got it down. And even though I don't sit on the seat, I agree, a wet toilet seat is disgusting. It's disgusting to just look at.

3) - 5) 100% (or maybe more accurately, 99.9%, since I might on rare occasion forget.) I always think I can feel the filth on my hands if I haven't washed them afterward, and I'm constantly aware of my hands if for some reason I can't wash them right away. I try not to touch anything if that's the case.

And I call bullshit on that study. I think people were lying to the pollsters. I would put the number of women at closer to 60% based on personal anecdotal evidence (hey, it's not like we're in Great Debates). I'm more amazed when I actually see someone wash their hands than when they don't, because it seems as if no one ever does.

DeadlyAccurate
10-04-2005, 03:31 PM
And if I'd read the OP better, I would see that it was an observational study. One thing I would ask, though, is whether the observers were visible to the observed, or whether they were hidden. People seem more likely to wash their hands if they know someone else is watching them. (You'll see more people washing their hands if you're doing the same, but while you're in the stall, more people will simply walk out the door.)

Asimovian
10-04-2005, 03:41 PM
People seem more likely to wash their hands if they know someone else is watching them.Damn...I meant to bring that up in the OP! :smack: That was actually my inspiration for starting the thread in the first place, and I forgot.

So we'll just add the question: for those of you who are not 100% washers, does it make a difference to you whether or not someone else is in the restroom at the time?

As someone mentioned in an earlier post, I may, on rare occasion, be less likely to wash depending on who else is in the public restroom at the same time. Being that it is in public around a bunch of strangers, I could care less what anyone thinks of me. If I have a reason to get out of there, someone's watchful eyes aren't going to shame me into changing my mind.

I am an inveterate eye-rubber, and have worked in the chemical industry. I won't say I am paranoid about getting stuff in my eyes or nasty bacteria/virus concerns, but I have a healthy respect for plain soap and water, and hate icky hands. I have been known to actually carry around several pair of latex gloves and use them when confronted with changing oil or using a bathroom with no way to wash up conveniently. Baby wipes are good, but not hte answer to everything=)

If it's a restaraunt I wash about 100% of the time, it only makes sense.

But all the hemming and hawing about cleanliness is kinda silly. If I splash on my hands, they get washed, otherwise I don't see the necessity. The doorknob, the taxi door, the money, the keyboard and anything else you're gonna be touching is a 100 times dirtier and more disgousting than the shaft of my penis. It at least gets washed one a day.

Regardless of where I am (home, friends, public) the proportion of times I wash depends on the proportion of times I get them dirty.

I'm not exaggerating; I just don't see a good excuse for not washing your hands after using the washroom. I find it really ironic that some people preach humanity's superiority over apes, and yet they don't mind walking around with shit on their hands like a chimp who just lobbed a turd.

The only times I don't wash after is when I might have to use an outhouse, in which case I wipe my hands on the grass or, if it's nearby, rub cedar leaves on my hands (cedar is a natural astringent).

I'm sure vigilantly washing my hands is the only reason I didn't get Norwalk virus last year (you contract Norwalk by ingesting traces of feces from an infected person).

Don't know if anyone else has made this distinction, but the above is based on the number of times when I at least run water over my hands. The figures would be quite different if I only counted on the times when I actually took the time to use a decent amount of soap, lather up, wash, and rinse. I'll usually only do that far if my hands feel particularly dirty or if I'm in a public restroom and think people are watching. The rest of the time I'll either just use water, or a bit of soap that usually gets washed away at first contact with water.

Public washroom - 100%
Other people's houses - 100%
My own house - no idea:

I think washing your hands after using the bathroom is beneficial not because of the toilet part, but because it's just good practice to wash your hands a lot. When I'm not at home, usually post-toilet-use is the most appropriate time to hand-wash.

The layout of my own house disrupts the usual use-toilet-wash-hands routine. The toilet is in its own little stall and the kitchen sink is actually closer than the bathroom sink, so it's often a trip well out of the way (depending on what I'm doing). So at home I wash my hands regularly, like as soon as I get home from somewhere, before touching food, or after blowing my nose, but not necessarily after using the bathroom.

I get the intolerable grimy-hands feeling after I use public transit or handle money, not after I use the bathroom. I know for certain that I am quite a lot cleaner down there than most of the things that I touch in public places.

5) 70% - let me explain - when I go numero uno, I can do so without "touching my junk" as a previous poster so elegantly expressed. You just pull your fly open and swivel your hips a bit and out it pops. A similar motion accomplishes the reverse feat. So when I am in my own home, I don't feel I necessarily need to wash after this. I make sure to wash up before eating anything though. When I am out in public or at a friend's house, I feel it is my duty to remain as clean as possible, so I wash up 100% of the time in those cases.

I worked in hospitals too long, and tend to wash my hands with hot water and lots of soap just about any time I pass by a sink. No, it's not an OCD, as it didn't start until I started getting sick working in hospitals, and stopped once I started this behavior.

Having dirty hands FEELS uncomfortable to me, so it is simply unthinkable to me to go to the bathroom without washing afterwards. Plus, I used to get violently ill with vomiting and diarrhea at least once every winter UNTIL I started making a habit of washing my hands when I get home after having spent time in public.
I can't see any good reason not to wash your hands. Having clean hands feels better, and it's healthier for you as well as everyone else who has to handle things you've touched!

Male, thirties, 100% in all scenarios whether or not anybody's there. (Not counting imminent shower entry, tho I'll sometimes just pee there.) Never just a rinse; always with soap.

As others have described or implied, I don't wash my hands after going to the bathroom because the act has somehow dirtied my digits. Rather, I wash my hands because as the primary interface with the world they are almost certainly the dirtiest part of me, and it's therefore a good idea to wash them regularly (not with Monk-like frequency, of course), and bathroom visits are simply the most convenient opportunity, as there's a sink handy. For all the difference it makes, we might as well wash our hands before using the toilet. Presuming you aren't fisting yourself while you crap, of course.

A guy from Microsoft, a guy from Apple, and a guy from Sun are at a conference. During a break they all go to the restroom to take a leak.

After they finish, the Microsoft guy washes his hands, takes a whole bunch of paper towels and dries his hands really well. He turns to the others and says,
"At Microsoft, we have to be thorough."

The Apple guy then goes to wash his hands and takes a single paper towel and dries his hands perfectly with it. He smugly says,
"At Apple, we have to be thorough AND efficient."

The Sun guy just walks straight out the door without even washing.
"At Sun, we don't piss on our hands."

1) Your sex: Female

2) Your age (or decade, if you prefer): 41

3) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a public restroom: 60 percent. It depends on the cleanliness of the bathroom. If it's dirty, I don't wash my hands. I often carry small packages of wipes with me for just such an occasion. If it's clean, and I don't have to touch the wet handle of a towel dispenser, I will wash my hands.

4) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in someone else's home: 90 percent. But it depends on how clean their hand towels are. If I see stains or it smells, I won't wash my hands because then I'll have nothing to dry them on except my clothes.

5) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in your own home: 5 percent. Usually only if I am leaving the bathroom and heading directly to the kitchen to handle food.

To do other than 100% is uncivilized. Trust me.

I saw a study on a news program several years ago where researchers took samples from sinks' hot and cold handles, toilet flush handles, and bathroom door handles and then measured the number and types of germs found.

They determined a few things:

--Touching the handles transfered more germs to people than they washed off with soap and water.

--The first stall is always the cleanest stall (they thought perhaps that was because few people use the first stall thinking it is the most used).

--Wet surfaces had far more germs on them than dry surfaces.

I changed my bathroom washing habits immediately.

After taking biology classes and food science classes, I would never think about not stopping to wash my hands. Do you know how sick you could get from eating with those same unwashed hands!? *shudder*

3) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a public restroom: I'd say about 50%. Most bathroom soaps make me break out in rashes. I don't know why this is, because almost everyone claims to be using hypo-allergenic soaps. It makes me leary of lathering up in public, but I risk it sometimes. If we're just talking water, 99%.

4) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in someone else's home: 50% there as well. If I'm in the home of someone I don't know, and I'm not familiar with their soap brand, I avoid it. 99% if we're talking just water, and they have hand towels available. I know where my clothes have been. :)

5) Percentage of time you wash your hands after using a restroom in your own home: 90%. Late night excursions are usually missed.

That said, I'm a big fan of hand sanitizer, and tend to use it religiously, since my work involves keyboard usage. I think I can safely say my hands are clean every time I touch my keyboard. I also wash before preparing or eating food, even if it means my hands swell up because the only soap available reacts with my skin.

Hopefully, you religious washers don't glare at everyone who doesn't wash in your presence. :) That bathroom door handle almost negates washing, and if the soap is going to give me a reaction, I'd just as soon clean up elsewhere. Oh, and I make damn fine shish-ka-bobs, and I assure you, they are disease and bacteria free at the time of their creation. :)

This story (http://www.healthfinder.gov/news/newsstory.asp?docID=528097) on Health Finder says some of you may be fibbing:

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Women do it better than men, but no one does it perfectly.

The issue, of course, is hand washing. Specifically, a new survey of washrooms in public places found only 83 percent of American adults actually wash their hands after using the bathroom, even though 91 percent say they do. ...

The other answers aren't so cut and dry.

These are for peeing only.
In my own home, I don't wash unless I've gotten something on my hands. I may rinse.
In public restrooms, I'll usually rinse, but no soap unless, once again, I've gotten something on my hands.
In others' houses, I'll always wash. Reason being, I like to try new soap.

I have sore, splitting, dry, cracked hands - I try to keep soap off of them. I wash in others' houses because if they have a soap that doesn't irritate me, I want to know what it is. :)

And perhaps counterintuitively, if the bathroom is really nasty, I'm not going to wash my hands in it at all. I'd rather have my own germs on me than someone else's!

If the bathroom is non-functional, then wet wipes or hand-sanitizer...typically at highway rest stops. We are training the kids our fear of germs too.

We're not afraid of germs and know that they are everywhere, but really, if this will decrease the possibility of us getting sick once in a while then it's worth it. Of course, now that the kids are at school, I suspect that we'll be up to our runny noses in runny noses...*hack*
