View Full Version : Post your recently bought favorite recording here
This is not a "favorite of all time" thread. I've been buying a lot of CDs lately (well since I actually have a job) and often I get a CD that I listen to, and instantly fall in love with, and just need to tell someone, but there's no one around to tell, and besides, most of the people I know hate my music anyway.
So feel free to talk about it here. We are here to listen.
Anyway about my current pix:
1 & 2 John Coltrane's Impressions and Ole - I've been more of a fusion guy for awhile. And while I listen to a lot of other stuff as well (anything from classical to Indian to techno/trance to bluegrass etc.) I've only started listening to more traditional jazz less than 2 years ago. As I study theory more and more I really have been able to appreciate jazz in ways I was never able to previously.
Anyway, I can't seem to stop listening to these 2 albums.
3. Bela Fleck's latest - Just got it this past weekend. As far as I'm concerned Bela can do no wrong.
4. Pat Metheny Group, I think the name of the CD is American Garage but I'm not sure. - anyway, huge Pat Metheny fan, it's no surprise that I love this one that I also picked up last week.
5. Steve Reich The Four Sections Whoa!! what an intense piece. style-minimal classical. Bought it about 3 weeks ago and have to fight myself from putting it on too much so as not to kill it.

Sons of the Desert, Change -- my favorite oughta-be-mainstream country act nobody's ever heard of
Jack Ingram, Hey You -- my favorite y'alternative act nobody's ever heard of
3 Doors Down, The Better Life -- never heard Kryptonite on the radio because I don't listen to pop/rock/alternative stations, but my sister is friends of a friend of the band and saw them perform at the bar she works at and said they were good. She was right.

I've recenly bought Wanda Jackson's Vintage Collection...a compilation of her 50s and early 60s stuff. I know it's good, because I transferred it to cassette really fast (my most convenient audio outlet).
(Jackson was a 50s singer who frequently sang rock and rockabilly...)

Steely Dan - 2 against nature
doesn't reach the heights of Aja or Royal Scam but I've only listened to it twice and the Dans stuff tends to grow on you.
Hush - Texas, Scottish band US name good CD though.
Supernatural - Santana not really sat down and taken it in yet but it seems like his best offering for some time.
Rhythm and Stealth - Left Field it took long enough to follow up Leftism and it is pretty good.

Moe, your tastes do seem pretty diverse. Of course, Steve Reich and anybody is pretty diverse.
My recent favs are probably Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Are a Drag (I figured I'd beat you to it, SR), No Borders Here by Jane Siberry and Audio by Blue Man Group.

I just bought (but have not have had time to play) the musical score to "The Hollow Man", by film composer Jerry Goldsmith. I also listen to "The Mummy" (by Goldsmith - great score!) and "Our Native Land" (classical piece by Finnish Composer Jean Sibelius.)
I also frequently listen to the rare score "Under Fire", composed by Goldsmith, guitar soloist Pat Metheny.

I bought two re-releases lately - Lou Reed's "Growing Up in Public" and Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense." They're playing in an endless loop on the tape deck of the truck.

You said a RECENT purchase, not an all-time thing, right? the singer has a gawdawful screechy voice, but the songs are very catchy.

Two biggies:
Not so recent, but probably a couple of months ago, was the amazing Transcendental Blues by Steve Earle. For the first two weeks I had it, nothing else even went near my CD player, and it's inspired me to dig out his other post-prison records too.
Black Flag - First Four Years. I've been after this for a while, and only found a copy about three weeks ago. The first Black Flag single (ie the first 4 songs on this) is close to the greatest punk rock record ever. The rest of the disc doesn't live up to that, but those four songs are what makes collecting music worthwhile. It's nice to know I've got something in common with Henry Rollins (both blown away by the early Black Flag).
HenrySpencer.
XTC - Wasp Star. I like this so much I'm considering giving copies away to random strangers. It's that good.
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs. A fascinating experiment that really works. Some great songs covering all sorts of unexpected genres.
All within the last two months, mehtinks. Haven't bought anything noteworthy more recently.

The last CD I bought was Beatles Anthology 3. I frickin' love it. I'm always fascinated hearing bands do alternate versions of their own songs, as well as early versions and out takes. The CD really display's the Beatles genius. I especially dig the "Rocky Raccoon" track ("Sminking?") and the spontaneous "Los Paronoias" song. I'm thinking of having it welded into my player.

Most 3 most recent acquisitions:
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Are a Drag
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Have a Ball
The Best of the Grateful Dead
I, too, have discovered Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and I can't bring myself to listen to anything else right now...plus, I've got several friends hooked. :)
And the Grateful Dead are pretty damn good, too.

Well... I just bought the euro version of TURBONEGRO's "Apocalypse Dudes." Dunno if it counts, as I bought the US release when it came out two years ago, but I just HAD to get my paws on that gatefold, 180-gram vinyl, Symbionese Liberation Army logo-sporting masterpeice of ripped, stripped, and well-equipped homosexual berserker rock and roll. Good head, indeed.

Pantera "Reinventing the Steel" A good Album, but its sounds a little different than their others.

Musicals Vol.1 from Japan. Features three songs

is what is was, and made them play it in the
store. Two people came up and asked what is was
cause it is good.

RobotArm Moe, your tastes do seem pretty diverse. Of course, Steve Reich and anybody is pretty diverse.
True. I figured the mention of Reich would balance out against the rest of my list which was primarily jazz/fusion.
And as long as you're in here I may as well mention that Uncle Bonsai's Myn Ynd Wymyn is another one of my recent purchases that not only can I not stop listening to, but I can't even get out of my head. I hum these tunes to work almost every day lately. Can't wait till the Bottom Line show.
Coldfire The last album I bought that really amazed me was Yes' The Ladder. Great stuff.
Really? I've heard mixed opinions but I should get it anyway, it being one of the few yes albums I don't own. Did you happen to catch 'em this most recent tour. Whattafuckin show!! They pulled out all my favs - Gates, Starship, Ritual, Heart of the Sunrise, etc.
BTW Jon Anderson is a guest vocalist on the new Bela Fleck album.
So tell me more about the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
I've never heard of them but RobotArm who seems to know his music speaks highly of them, and Mishell, a Grateful Dead fan (deadhead here) likes 'em. What's they're deal? New/old? Instrumental/lyrical? Improv/composition? Dark/light?
Oh, and I'll just make mention of Tuck & Patti's Paradise found which I bought probably a few months ago and can't get enough of. Tuck Andress may be the jazz guitarrist of his kind (i.e. more comping in support of Patti's vocals rather than soloing) ever.

I went and bought a CD out of my high school days. Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables by the Dead Kennedys. I am listening to "Kill the Poor" right now. What a magnificent album.

Moe,
So tell me more about Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
I'd never heard of them until a week or so ago, when they came up in some other threads here (Best weird songs, best cover versions, or something of that nature. Apparently SwimmingRiddles is quite taken with them as well.) They do punk covers of songs that most punk bands would not think to cover. MF and the GG Are a Drag is all showtunes. I saw another of their CDs in the rack, and it was things like Seasons in the Sun.

Moe: this may sounds like a bold statement, but I honestly think that "The Ladder" is the best Yes album since 90125.

Coldy, i hope this doesn't sound blasphemous or anything but I'm really not a fan of 90125. I much prefer the 70's progressive stuff to the poppy 80's stuff, though I do like Drama.
But I did hear the one single (In 7 IIRC, but I forgot the title) on the radio and liked it. They didn't do anything from The Ladder at the show i saw.

You're forgiven - I like both, myself. But The Ladder can be compared to 90125 because all the tunes are so well-composed. Not a complete show-off of skills, rather a very harmonious album with a wide variety of musical influences. Anyway, give it a try ;)
