Has it ALWAYS been like this, or is this a new thing? I've never noticed it before, and it sorta creeps me out! I had to get a picture of it and here it is:

This is a lot more obvious than the Proctor & Gamble logo!
Of course, with the pointy end there it kinda looks like a sword.......

ProctEr, not Proctor. And no, they don't. They do own Pringles, though.

It says on the can that the company is owned by Pik-Nik Foods USA, out of Pleasanton, CA.
Interesting. I may just email the company and see what they have to say about it.

That's not an upside-down cross. It's actually on a slant, and the two pieces aren't at right angles to each other. It's more like an X with a stiffy.

How, exactly, does it "creep (you) out"? The random placement of potato pieces? Are you trying to imply that the company is anti-religion? If so, have you seen a therapist?

I was just making an observation regarding how seeing it made me react. There's really no reason for it to creep me out, but it does.
I come to the Dope for enjoyment, not for arguments or to justify anything that I might say or feel.
I'm kindly asking a mod to please close the thread. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Reminds me of a woman at the local 711 who used to get completely squicked out every time I purchased a pack of cigs and a large coffee. Total price, with tax: $6.66.
Considering it happened about 2 or 3 times a week, for months, I eventually commented that it was just a number and there was no reason for her to be bothered by it.
The very next day a cup o' joe went up a nickel. Coincidence? Or mayyyyybeeeee... SATAN?!

Hey, I remember the time when Count Chocula depicted Bela Lugosi's Dracula on the box and he was wearing a medallion with a six-pointed Star of David instead of a five-pointed pentagram. I wish I'd bought a box now.

I emailed the company, told them how well we enjoyed the product and then asked about the label. I got a response already. Here it is:
Hi ----,
First of all, thanks for the kind words about our product.
I checked with our label designer and she says that she laid out the shoestrings in this criss-cross fashion simply for the sake of appearance, and she didn't intend any hidden symbolism. Frankly, I had never noticed this until you brought it up.
Thanks for taking the time to contact us, and don't hesitate if you have any other questions or concerns.
Best regards,

As an anagram for "Lord Ebbs Yon", though, it makes perfect sense.

I'd bet that your query started a conversation, not only here, but in the company. Hope they don't have too many fundie employees, or it could lead to the downfal of the company. Chaos theory?

I was told once, upon inquiring about an upside down cross on a church, that it represented <someone> that had been crucified upside down. (because they felt unworthy to be crucified like Christ) and that it was common for Churches that were built upon the foundation of St <Peter?> <Paul?>
Ok so I'm rusty on my knowledge of Christian history. Sorry.

Well, I got yet another email. This time it was from the graphics person. I can't believe that they emailed me twice! When I emailed them, I didn't write anything bad about the label OR their product. I told them that I enjoyed their product and I just was wondering about the picture that was on the back of the can. Anyhow, here is what was sent to me the second time:
Dear ----,
Hello, my name is Tara Baumann the graphics person who did the layout to the Pik-Nik shoestring potatoes. I can assure you that there was no intentional symbolism in the placement of the shoestring potatoes. The potatoes were supposed to be random. I see an x and yet I do see your point that it could look like a sword or an up-side down cross. But, frankly that would be against my faith. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I will keep that in mind for future projects.
Sincerely,
Tara

'Bob Reynolds' is an anagram of Bled Roy's nob. What is a nob? A slang term for 'penis'. Who makes penises bleed? Say, from ritually removing the end? The Jews! And the Jews killed Jesus! Aha! It is an anti-Christian symbol!
Or maybe it's just a potato-string X-Wing fighter seen from the top. Or Gandalf's sword.
And even worse, nonacetone anagrams into "a côte en non". Suspicious, considering we're speaking of a side of fries...

St. Peter. That's why the papal throne has an upside down cross carved into it, because Peter is believed to be the first Pope.

I can't believe I've avoided this thread for so long-- and I didn't think the title sounded interesting! Someone MUST write up an e-mail with their concerns (including the response from the woman-- against your religion, eh? Maybe she meant to include a cross at all) and we can all send it to everyone in our address book. We'll let the good old internet do the rest. You know, I figured these tripe-filled hysterical urban legend spam e-mails had to come from somewhere...
