After reading a thread showing that countless people had read thousands of books, I am very curious as to just how old everyone is on here? Being only 20, I feel very young on these boards.

What the .... ?!?!

The two of us have an average age of 33.5

I think you'll find that nearly all of us have been alive since we were born. A few claim to be zombies or vampires, and I don't know if Cthulu's age can be calculated. The last time or two this question has come up, it seemed the largest group of answers clustered in the twenties.

I'm 56, and I know I'm not the oldest Doper.

By the way, Trust, this thread will probably be deemed a survey and whisked off to IMHO.

I'm 29. I'm not sure, but I think a few years ago the average was mid-30's and it's now dropped to late 20's... or maybe I just felt younger than everyone because I was younger, and now I've caught up :D

Just trying to improve things up to possibly 40 on average.

40 was a nice year-------no matter what they say.

Arithmetic mean?

Median?

Mode?

Geometric mean?

Which average were you looking for?

I hate vague questions. We always wind up with the wrong answers.

Which average were you looking for?

I'm going with the harmonic mean here.

Seriously, the average age of US dopers is probably right around thirty or so with a high variance. FWIW, I'm 25.

I'm 46. As the 22nd Doper to post my age in this thread, I just brought the average to about 39.9 and my prediction is 35 plus or minus... something.

I'd even think it's higher...reading this board for the last 6 years I feel pretty close to younger than the median at times. I'd put it around 38. I'll probably, obviously be wrong though.

Another 25 year old. (Which still sounds kinda old to me...I guess because I can no longer claim to be in my "early 20s" -- it's like a whole new phase of life... )

I was going to ask why you were just wondering about American dopers, but then I realized that you didn't capitalize us for a reason... :smack: Older, but not wiser...

I'm predicting around 35, too, though I suspect that different age-groups gravitate towards different forums. GD, I think, draws an older crowd than MPSIMS, for example.

My guess is 32, but that all depends upon who shows up to answer.

Which is why I popped in... 30 here, and hoping to bring down the average of the older (and wiser!) Dopers so we can maintain our sleek, sexy, hip public image.

This would be a GREAT sticky thread. Obviously we'd need a small shell script to peruse the posts and update the ages though. :)

We just did this, as jrfranchi has pointed out. I was hoping to see an average come out of the previous thread, but noooo!
Maybe this one will bear fruit, although I think it's going to take several hundred responses to have any hope of accuracy.
I turn 67 in Jan. '06. That should give a boost to the median.

Word to the wise: Don't ever say this to your boss. Like, when you find out how long the boss has been with the company, an appropriate response emphatically is not, "You've worked here longer than I've been alive!" Trust me on this one.
