View Full Version : When was your last Pink Floyd moment?
The Great Sun Jester

I got a little black book with my poems in.
Got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in.
When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone in.
...snip...
I've got wild staring eyes
I've got a strong urge to fly
But I've got nowhere to fly to
...so. When's the last time Roger et.al. read your mind and put what they found to music?

Run to the bedroom,
In the suitcase on the left
You'll find my favorite axe.
Don't look so frightened
This is just a passing phase,
One of my bad days.

I often find myself thinking "how I wish you were here" ... like just last week, when I realized that it's been over a year already since my friend Chuck died. That's the Floyd lyric/song that winds up in my head the most.

You know that I care what happens to you,
and I know that you care for me,
so I don't feel alone,
or the weight of the stone,
now that I've found somewhere safe
to bury my bone.
And any fool knows a dog needs a home,
a shelter from pigs on the wing.

Run rabbit run
dig that hole, forget the sun
and when at last the work is done
don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile

Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes,
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time.
And far from flying high in clear blue skies,
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide.

[quote]Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
Night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
Tight as a tourniquet,
Dry as a funeral drum.[quote]

Well, not recent but Auguest brought it up. When I was a teen (back during the 70's) a friend girl of mine's dad LOVED pink floyd. He bought all their albums.
He gets the latest and lays down on his sofa with headphones turned up listening.
We are in the *over garage* rumpus room when we hear his screech ..
he had "careful with that Axe Eugene" at full volume ...
heh
I tink he came straight up offa the couch when the scream came. :p
As for myself, I've never been able to take politicians seriously after "the paper holds their folded faces to the floor ......... And everyday, the paper brings more".
'cause it DOES.

You got to be crazy, you gotta have a real need,
You gotta sleep on your toes, when you're on the street,
Got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
(Best Pink Floyd song - ever)
But this also offers the perfect opportunity to a question that occured to me again the other day:
In Pigs on the Wing, Part 1, he sings "We would zigzag our way, through the boredom and pain, wondering which of the ______ to blame". Now, every lyric sheet I've ever seen has said that "buggers" goes in the blank, but it doesnt *sound* like buggers to me - before I had seen lyrics, I thought he was saying "brothers" and even listening to it knowing that it should be "buggers" it doesn't click. Anyone else feel this way?

that binds a life to a life
A small regret, you won't forget,
There'll be no sleep in here tonight

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and helpless
...snip...
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun
...snip...
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
That sonofabitch Waters totally ripped off the last few years of my life! I demand retribution! I demand royalties! .... What's that?.... What?.... They sang this in 1994?
Well, ... damn.

pushing 2:am. Can't sleep. Giggling my butt off wondering why the Bush people haven't threatened us with this yet. The cat is not amused and wants me to come back to bed. But I'm just a little uneasy about it just now. :)

(Oh my god, how did they get in here? I thought we were safe home back in England)
I'm devastated that I've lost my mp3s of Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. I absolutely love that album, and the only track they have on Napster is 4:01 (I think... never was good with the track names). There is one song on there that I truly miss - I think of it as the title track, sort of an up tempo more mainstream sounding song that features sound clips from the movie "Shane". "Shane! My mother wants you!"

Hush now baby, baby, dont you cry.
Mother's gonna make all your nightmares come true.
Mother's gonna put all her fears into you.
Mother's gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She wont let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Mama will keep baby cozy and warm.
Ooooh baby ooooh baby oooooh baby,
Of course mama'll help to build the wall.
SmithWife & I have slightly different ideas about prenting - I think she's a bit smothering, and tends toward neurotic (it's her mom's fault - SmithWife is, for the most part, pretty level-headed) and on a couple of occassions I've trotted out this bit of lyrics. Kind of mean, I know, but it really got the point across.
Good thread, btw. Any chance to quote Pink Floyd song lyrics is welcome. :D

(didn't we get into trouble for quoting too many lyrics a while back?)
Lots of choices, but here's my pick for today:
Who are you and who am I
To say we know the reason why?
Some are born; some men die
Beneath one infinite sky.
There'll be war, there'll be peace.
But everything one day will cease.
All the iron turned to rust;
All the proud men turned to dust.
And so all things, time will mend.
So this song will end.

I have become comfortably numb, I get that a lot, but the verse preceeding that line... who hasn't had a dose of that?
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.

If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late again.

Though, it would be interesting to hear Roger Waters put his spin on it. At least if it made me want to slit my wrists, it would be for an entirely different reason ;)

"Stairway scare Dan dare who's there?"
The light switch to my basement requires shuffling about blindly with arms pinwheeling to locate it, so we tend to just leave it on.
The other day while trying to find the switch, my dog nosed my in the butt. I let out a most unmanly shriek.

Hey Jean, this is Henry McLean,
And I've finished my beautiful flying machine,
And I'm ringing to say that I'm leaving and maybe,
You'd like to come fly with me and hide with me baby.
Or another favourite:
And the eagle flies in clear blue skies,
Breathing in the clear blue air,
Back here on the ground,
Another dealer coughs and dies,
And fifty more come rolling off,
The Ford production line.
I may have another in my sig that I never use, lets see...

The evidence before the court is incontravertible.
There’s no need for the jury to retire.
In all my years of judging I have never heard before,
Of someone more deserving of the full penalty of the law.
The way you made them suffer....
This kept playing in my head as I was sitting there in the courtroom for my expired tags ticket (got dismissed). The judge was an evil powertripping hag who presumed guilt and believed every single word a cop would say and would then berate and humiliate most defendants.
Stop!
I wanna go home,
Take off this uniform and leave the show.
And I'm waiting in this cell because I have to know,
Have I been guilty all this time?

Life is a short warm moment,
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try,
In the twinkling of an eye,
Eighty years with luck or even less.

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Just works perfectly (maybe if taken just a bit too literally) with me hating running track in the winter like I am. This part pops up a lot.
