Edward Albert, (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/15622317.htm) an actor who appeared in such films as Buttterflies Are Free and Guarding Tess, has passed away at the age of 55. Albert also gained some fame as an environmental and human-rights activist, following in the footsteps of father Eddie (Green Acres' Oliver Wendell Douglas), who died last year after being cared for by Edward for ten years.
Also, Iva Toguri D'Aquino (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=topNews&storyID=2006-09-27T213924Z_01_N27203812_RTRUKOC_0_US-ROSE.xml&WTmodLoc=NewsHome-C1-topNews-9) has passed away at the age of 90. People have picked names that belong to more than one famous person before (George Bush is a common example). The rule is to assume it's the more famous person if the picker doesn't specify. So unless people specifically said they were picking the Pakistani actor, the assumption would be they meant the better known American boxer.

Well, you see, by his own admission, Rachm Qoch meticulously searches Internet news sources and other online databases using keywords such as "celebrity," "terminal illness," "cancer" etc. to assemble his list.
Me, I'd rather just pick the old, tired, worn out, and overstayed-their-welcome B-list semi-celebrities whose departure from this planet will embiggen us all. (Sting, are you listening?)
And so, while Rachm Qoch may pile up a lot of points, I get infinitely more satisfaction each time one of my celebrities die, for the aforementioned reasons.

You can have 13.
To be considered a celebrity, their death has to be able to generate a wire service story, not simply a local obit.
Hamid Karzai would qualify, but his vice-Minister of Paper Clips probably would not qualify, unless assassinated in a spectacular manner...

Nobel economist Milton Friedman dead at 94 (http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/16/news/newsmakers/friedman/index.htm)
I was in the car and listening to the news on the radio. I heard the mention of Milton Friedman's name and turned the radio up, but I was too late and missed the story. My husband gives me a very strange look. In answer to his question of why I was so interested in Friedman, I explained, " Oh, I was just hoping that they were reporting that he was dead."
The 6 points he is worth to me, ( maybe even a unique pick?) was not worth the look of shock on my husband's face. Ironically, my husband is no fan of Friedman's economics going back to a decision about the banks and gold or something. But he still found it a bit chilling I was looking forward to his death. I tried to explain I only had about 7 weeks left to score a few more, I am way behind with just 2 kicking the bucket so far.
I must remember to keep any celebrating of Death Pool picks confined to this thread and the good (and very warped) folks here.) :)

OK, you got me. It was worth it. It would have been worth it for 2 points!!
And I was lucky we were on our way to dinner to celebrate one of our horses' winning her second race, so my smiling and being giddy for the evening could have been explained by my joy over the success of my filly and her connections, rather than the joy of an old economist going to the great free market in the sky and giving me 6 points.

That one would have most certainly done me in. Forgetting that I was a fan of his, and thought he did the world a great service in showing us the beauty of all animals, even at times redefining beauty, he was worth a lot of points!
When I first heard he had died I thought, "I bet a bunch of others saw that coming, why didn't I think of using him?"

Very true! I did notice my husband eyeing me suspiciously all night. He finally broke down and asked, "I am not on your list am I?" I laughed and told him that was a ridiculous question, "Don't be silly........I would never consider such a thing......You aren't famous enough to count!"
I am considering making my 2007 list consist of nothing but known murderers, rapists, terrorists, brutal dictators, etc. That way most everyone else will be rejoicing as well, and I won't be forced to hide my glee like a dirty little secret.

Incidentally, I had a dream the other night in which I was explaining the concept of the Death Pool to Danny DeVito. I mentioned that there were several possible strategies -- a participant might choose to go for high-scoring longshots like Lindsay Lohan, or opt to select such "quantity not quality" figures as Gerald Ford, Art Linkletter, and Earl Butz. I even told Danny that some Dopers scour the Internet for information on celebs who are terminally ill.
He seemed interested, and asked how much it cost to play. To emphasize the bargain nature of SDMB membership, I asked DeVito how much he paid when he went out for breakfast. His wife, Rhea Perlman (who had not been in the dream up until then) shouted across the room that the last time she and Danny had gone to a Beverly Hills restaurant for a morning meal, it had ended up costing about $1000 because the couple had been joined by a bunch of friends. I then told Danny that that kind of money would cover about seventy years' worth of membership (nice to know my basic math skills exist even when I'm not fully conscious!), and that I would protect his identity if he decided to join and I recognized him as one of the new members. Then I woke up with the details fresh in my mind.
