I think you're right. My high school math teacher did a stint as a kindergarten teacher. When he asked the class, "Can anyone count to ten" invariably the reply from a volunteer would be, "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, niiiiiiine, tennnnnnnnn"

If ever anyone says the word "phenomenon" I am required to reply "doo dooooo da doo doo"There is a town outside of the Twin Cities named Menomonie. I have to say "doo doooo da doo doo" when I hear the name, and I suspect half of the Metro area does as well. If only the town's founding fathers had chosen an 'a' at the end instead of an 'ie'.

My husband and I have fallen victim to the brainwashing, too. If one of us is going to the store and mentions "a loaf of bread", then the other person will then say, "a container of milk and a stick of butter".

Remember that one?

Oooh! Oooh! My brother and I aruge about this one. To my recollection"container of milk" didn't sound right. I always thought it was "jug of milk" and yet he swears it was "container" (or "containah" to be more precise).

Funny how the brain gets programmed. I suffer from that evil Sesame Street song on occasion.

My kids used to have one of those awful books that made various noises when you pushed one of the buttons. One button had a picture of a banana, and when you pushed it, this odd voice said "Banaaana, banaaana".

To this day, I can't hear the word banana without saying "banaaana, banaaana" in my head (and unfortunately, sometimes out loud).

"Every time I feel alone
And slightly blue
That's when I begin to think
It's what I'd like to start to do

And though it may not be the kind of thing
That's quite your cup of tea
I recommend you pay attention
To the little dance you're gonna see

Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
Dancing a little smidgeon of
The kind of ballet
Sweeps me away

Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
People may smile but
I don't mind
They'll never understand
The kind of fun I find

Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon
Doin' the (coo, coo) pigeon everyday
People may smile, but
I don't mind!

However, this is my super duper all time favorite Sesame Street song:
"The Batty Bat"
"One, two, three, spread out the cape
One, two, three, twirl ‘round the floor
One, two, three, left foot you swing
One, two, three, then start to sing
One, two, three, loud as you please!
One, two, three, counting with ease!
One, two, three, doing the batty bat!
Bats: Batty, batty bat; batty bat; batty bat; batty bat!
Count: One, two, three, count!
Bats: Batty, batty bat; batty bat; batty bat; batty bat!
Count: One, two, three, count!
Bats: Batty, batty bat; batty bat; batty bat; batty bat!
Count: One, two, three, count!
Won’t you dance with me, doing the batty bat? "

Yeah, I love all these bits.

Last night, I served pickled beets in sour cream (it was Russian night), and my husband started singing "beet beet sugar beet!" And whenever the kids ask for milk, we wind up with Miiiiiillk, milk, milk, la lah laaa la...

Yes, Sesame Street has pretty much taken over our brains.

[nonsensical story]One time I was with some friends at a dance performance thingy, and they started playing that piece that shows up in 2001 at the beginning, before the Blue Danube Waltz bit, you know what I mean, very majestic and loud, and my friend leans over to me and hisses, ELEVEN!! And I about died laughing...[/nonsensical story]

I routinely think about Forgetful Jones, the poor cowboy who could never remember anything. Even as a little kid, I knew the guy had early-onset Alzheimer's and I thought it was wrong to make fun of him.

Remember the pie guy? He would be carrying a tray full of pies and then announce how many he had (TEN STRAWBERRY PIES!) and then something would happen that would make him tumble down the stairs.

"W...for Willamina!"

Whenever my mother would send me to the corner store, I'd mutter "a load of bread, a containa of milk, and a stick of butta" under my breath.

Do you remember this?

Tiny little super guy!
Pops right up before your eyes!
He's no bigger than your thumb!
Snap your fingers, here he comes!

Don't look in the sky.
Don't look in the sea.
He's inside of you and me.

You can't tell a hero by his side.
He's just a tiny little super guy.

A snippet of my favorite:

"I'm an aardvark - fierce and fee
I'm an aardvark - standing bravely

I'm an aardvark,
And I'm tough and smart and strong

And that's the way I'll always be ...

Oh, what a kickass site!

Ooooh, my personal favorite:

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Clearly I am;

A long time ago,
In a far off place,
There lived a lower case n.
Standing on a hill,
and staring into space,
and it was know that she would cry now and then.

A lower case n,
standing on a hill.
The wind is very still,
for the lower case nnnnnnnnnnnn.

And then one day,
a rocket ship,
came screaming from the sky.
It landed on the hill,
and opened up a door,
and something started coming outside.

A lower case n!
Standing on the hill.

Hahahaha! I'd forgotten all about that part. My personal favorite was Monsterpiece Theater with Cookie Monster as the host. "The Taming of the Shoe" and "The Old Man and the C" were classics.

Does anyone remember a song about breathing from Seasame Street?

Hoo, breathe in,

I looked for ages to find a decent mp3 of the Capital I song...

We all live in a capital I
In the middle of the desert
In the center of the sky
And all day long we polish on the I
To keep it clean and shiny
So it brightens up the sky
Rubbing it here
And scrubbing it there
Polishing the I
So high in the air

As we work we sing a lively tune
"It is great to be so happy on a busy afternoon."
And when we're through with the day's only chore
We go into the I
And we close the door

Capital I, capital I, capital I, capital I

I never could find one of good quality, though. :(

The other one that haunts me was just an a capella choral piece played while colored circles rotated around the screen. I've never found out what that song was. I actually watched old reruns on Noggin for a month hoping to get it recorded.

Anyone remember "I love trash! Anything dirty or dingy or dusty! Anything ragged or rotten or rusty! Yes, I love trash!"

And I have the mp3 of that on my computer!

When my roommate went to the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago, she came back excited about the Jollyball (http://www.morgan-art.ch/sculp7.htm). She described it as "a really big marble maze, like one two three FOUR FIVE six seven eight NINE TEN eleven twelve". I knew exactly what she meant.

On post #55, I mention him as one of my faves.
But I think it went more like this:

Teeny little super guy
Pops right up before your eyes
Snap your fingers here he comes

[and then the TLSG says something that rhymes but is unintelligible]

Don't look at the sky
Don't look at the sea
He's inside of you and me.

You can't tell a hero by his size
He's just a teeny little super guy.
ohh, yeah. [sung by TLSG]

Inventive as they were, Teeny Little Super Guy didn't have nearly the special effects that a lot of today's kid shows do. But those kitchen countertop short films were awfully appealing in their simplicity.

All of my favorite songs have already been named, but I clearly remember some of my favorite "segments" for lack of a better word involved (I believe) just footage of making and playing steel drums, and then another that followed eggs through some sort of mass production system, from hen to box.

I expound on the effect that the pinball counting song had on me in this (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=167685) previous thread about Sesame Street.

The counting to 12 song with the shiney rolling marble that got to roll through all of the cool stuff is by far my strongest Sesame Street memory.

When I was a kid there was an artist in the area who made kinetic sculptures (http://koolkinetics.com/kinetic_stuff/index.htm) and I would drag my parents to the galleries and shops that sold his/her work because they were just like the Sesame Street marble song and I loved them so.

I also loved to play MouseTrap and pinball because they reminded me of the Sesame Street marble song.

Does anyone remember the skit where there's this short muppet trying to jump up and get an apple off a tree, but he can't reach it. Then this tall muppet comes and picks one off. The small guy looks kind of sad, and keeps jumping. But then you realize that the tall guy can't bend his arms, so even though he can reach the apples, he can't eat them. They both struggle for a few seconds, and then they come up with the brilliant idea that tall guy will pick apples for them both and short guy will help tall guy eat them. Everyone learns a valuable lesson about teamwork and sharing.

I'm thinking that, too. I think they were Geefles and Gonks. One type had very, very short arms, and the other had long arms but he couldn't bend them. At the end, one of them marvels at this new sharing thing they've invented and says, "Let's call it...'cooperation'". The other one says, "No, let's call it 'Shirley'!"

Well, everything comes in its own special size,
I guess it can be measured by where you put your eyes.
It's so big when you're close, it looks smaller back a bit,
That's about the size of it.

Oh, the big becomes the little when you see it back a bit,
The huge becomes the dinky, which is just the opposite.
Of the larger that gets smaller, it never seems to quit,
That's about the size of it.

That the big becomes the little, that's the way it seems to go,
That they make up a larger thing is something good to know.
It's nice to know that though we're small, there's always room to grow,
And that's about the size of it.

That's about the size, where you put your eyes, that's about the size of it.

I think the Sesame Street bit I was most intrigued with was the Me and My Llama girl. Remember that? It's about a girl who takes her llama to the vet, and there's this song about Me and My Llama. The bit that interested me the most was that she seemed to live in a city! Now, I too lived in a city, and my parents were always using that as the reason I couldn't have a horse or a cow or whatever, but how come that girl got a llama?

Seemed unfair.
