WTF? (http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/technology_internetcritic/)

Is Fox TV now stealing the names of characters for their shows from here? What's coming next? "The Bus Guy Stories"?......"Qagdop: Prison Doc"?

Given Bob Loblaw's registration date and Arrested Developments' original air date, I'd rethink the matter.

I'd watch Qagdop: Prison Doc, sounds like a nice comedy. Not The Bus Guy Stories though as cable porn usually isn't very good.

::hangs head in shame::

But I never watched the show, so I claim ignorance.

Either this is a really elaborate joke by a former lawyer on the "AD" staff (possible, not likely), or an enterprising and perhaps knowledgeable lawyer out there decided to take the appearance of Bob Loblaw as the chance she/he'd been looking for to start a blog. Or to construct his/her own really elaborate joke.

...or maybe a lawyer who start a web page happenend to be named Robert Loblaw?

There is a supermarket chain in this part of Canada called Loblaw's and I can remember the joke from 40 years ago that the owner's name was Bob. Bob Loblaw goes way back.

Exactly. It's a very old joke name like Ben Dover, Mike Hunt or Dick Hertz.

Okay, call me stupid if you must, but what's funny about the name Bob Loblaw?

Say out loud "Don't talk nonsense to Bob Loblaw"

Well, it's the kind of name that you don't speak nonsense to. Bob Loblaw is not interested in gibberish.

Sounds like a "Chuck Norris" style meme coming up!

I'm slow on the uptake. I never realized the creamy little onomatopoetic center in the middle of that name till this thread.

We had the same store in Erie, PA, but it was pronounced LOWblahs, so I never heard that joke when I lived there. Too bad I missed out... :smack:

Must be American pronunciation that's preventing the joke from penetrating my skull, even with hajario's final explicit description.

"Standard" pronounciation around here is to say "Bob" and "Lob" as if you were phonetically saying "bawb" and "lawb." Thus, both of the first two three-letter segments of the name sound the same as the third. How do you say it?

GuanoLad

My pronunciation (being originally from New Zealand and currently Australia) is something like:

Bub - Lobb - Laww.

To me it looks and sounds like three distinct syllables and sounds. Just like a name normally is. Whereas what it is apparently meant to sound like I would pronounce thusly:

Bla Bla Bla.

Barely even close to similar. Hence my mystification.

The SDMB has, I believe, two Bob Loblaws. The bob_loblaw you mentioned, and Bob Loblaw, who registered after the character's introduction. (And IIRC, his first post was in fact in that week's Arrested Development thread.) Anyway, as noted above, the show is swiping the name from the SDMB; AD and bob just both made the same joke.

--Cliffy

P.S. 'That's right. I couldn't believe it There was a guy up on the stage in front of women in a mixed audience saying Bob Loblaw.'

The Judge: 'This I never heard. Bob Loblaw.'

'Said Bob Loblaw. He said Bob Loblaw. I'm not going to lie to you.'

The D.A.: 'The guy said Bob Loblaw, look at him he's smug he's not going to repent.'

Then they dug something. They sort of liked saying 'Bob Loblaw' because they said it a few extra times.

ya, i'm still around.

and i have been thinking of suing the producers & writers of arrested development, but the thing is, i really like the show, and will be a very sad panda when the final episode has aired.

but ya, it is a very old "amanda hugginkiss" or "mike hunt" style joke, and i have no valid claim being an original (here or elsewhere) so ya.

at the very least, i need better lawyers.
