View Full Version : Ted Nugent can Kiss My Ass

He opened for KISS this weekend and I was there. I've seen this asshole before and I was not impressed the first time. This time he insulted me personally. He said that if you don't speak English you should get out of America. I know, I know, he says things to be controversial. It's his "thing". Dammit, I paid for the ticket that paid his salary, I don't know why I have to expect to be insulted. Oh, you might be wanting me to explain why that particular comment is an insult. Well, you see my great grandparents came to America from Germany looking for a better life. (My great grandmother had a chaperone). When they found a place to settle down, they were married and had children. My grandmother was born in North Dakota. They never learned to speak to English. If they hadn't decided to stay in America anyway, my grandmother would never have met my grandfather and my father never would have been born and I would not exist. So that stupid asshole insulted me personally. I wonder how many of the idiots in the audience screaming "Yeah!" to the comment also would not be here if there ancestors hadn't immigrated from Germany or Italy or wherever even though they could speak English. Ted Nugent can Kiss My Ass.
And by the way, if he's going to make comments like that about speaking English, I think perhaps he should look up the definition of "dirty whore". It does NOT mean women who have different political views from you. I don't think he has a full grasp of the language himself.

Whoa, now slow down there mom! While the delivery of the message may not have been the most tactful way to say learn English, the message is valid. I wouldn't dream of going to another country and expecting them to speak English. How pompous is it to say "I'm going to Belgium, so those Belgians had better damn well speak English so we can communicate". In Belgium they speak French and Dutch, so if I plan to get along I had better either bring someone with that speaks French and Dutch, learn it myself, or get lucky and run into people who speak English. If I was going to go live in another country I had better learn the language. If you move to the US the official language is English. You should not expect someone else to cater to your needs to have another language spoken to you. If you want to remember your native language, keep speaking it, hell even teach it to your children, that's fine. However, when you decide to live in the US it is encumbered upon you to learn English.

Well Mom, so what is your problem anyway? Get off your pedestal! Even if your grandmother had been deported she probably would have married and given birth to children. One of those children could have helped bring you into the world.
The man made a statement, he has freedom of speech, he is allowed to express his opinions, just as you are free to express your opinions. Get a life!!!

Ted Nugent also referred to "faggots" quite negatively as well, IIRC.
He's an asshole. He enjoys being an asshole. He thinks he's fucking articulate and smart, but when he gets in a forum like Politically Incorrect, and has to deal with people who are against his ideology, he comes off dumber than the animals he so proudly eats.
Archer, you're a fucking rocket scientist. Don't you see that the line, "The man made a statement, he has freedom of speech, he is allowed to express his opinions, just as you are free to express your opinions." applies to his post as well as Ted's speak?

So this whole thing is about someone's ruffled feathers because people move here and don't speak English?
I am sure Ted Nugent is an ass. I avoid listening to him, and his music. 'Nuff said.
But regarding the rant in the OP: come on. He's not the first person to bitch about people moving here and not wanting to speak English. Hell, I don't actually care if they don't speak English, but they'd better not whine and complain about how no one speaks their language! (This does happen. A lot.)

While Nugent is an asshole for the way he stated his views, I agree with Kinoons that he does have a reasonable point. Many gernerations ago my family had to learn English when they moved to America. Even though I was born here and learned English at my mothers knee, I was forced to study English for 12 years in the public school system and another 4 in college. It is NOT unreasonable to expect someone who has immigrated to this country to learn enough to be able to read street signs, ballots, drivers liscenses, etc (say, a fourth grade reading level) before they are granted citizenship. If I immigrated to another country I would be damned well expected to learn the language. And, I would be embarrased if I didn't.

I don't agree completely with Nugent. But when someone moves to this country, they should learn to speak the language.
I worked with a woman whose mother had lived in this country for 50 years and never learned more than a few phrases. She would get angry that I didn't speak Yugo. Her father wasn't much better.
Now, the inlaws are germans. They came here not speaking a word of english and 35 years later they are fluent and no problemo. They went through a lot of discrimination due to the language and the joys of being a Kraut until they could speak it better and now, you would never ever make that mistake again.
They agree with the ideology behind Nugents statement. How can you be a productive member of your new home if you can't speak the language?

I, also, don't agree with the presentaion, but I agree with the sentiment. My ancestors came here from Germany. And they learned to read and speak English. I'm all in favor of immigration, so long as those immigrants attempt to learn the language. (I'm told it's a difficult language to learn) I am very much opposed to bilingual education (which, in L.A., is failing miserably), ballots in English AND Spanish, Ebonics and other such nonsense.
If I move to Mexico, I'll learn Spanish. I feel certain that the Mexicans would expect it of me. The same goes for France, Germany, Japan and Italy.
BTW, does any other county attempt bilingual education?

It is interesting to note that English is rapidly becoming the international language. All airline traffic uses it exclusivly and most anywhere you go in Europe, you can easily find someone who speaks it understandably if not fluently.
There is some argument as to where it all began. Some say that it started during the British Colonial period, when their empire was spreading across the globe, but I believe it began where all, great cultural changes begin: in waterfront buckets-of-blood where bar tenders and hookers picked it up from servicemen and tourists.
Ted Nugent? Whodafuck is Ted Nugent?

No it's not. It's about as valid as suggesting we start pogroms against the Hmong.
I wouldn't dream of going to another country and expecting them to speak English.

Again. You've failed to point out anyone who comes to America and expects people to all speak French. And ass someone who lived in Amsterdam and Brussels for about 10 moths I can assure you that you are full of shit. I don't speak a word (ok maybe one) of French or Dutch, or German (which they also speak in Belgium, if you're going to mention a country at least get the languages right). I got along fine. Most people do in fact speak english. Also it's funny you would bring up Belgium. No one in Belgium curses the French speakers for not knowing Dutch. They just coexist with different languages. And yet, you don't want that. When I talked to people no one showed me disrespect because I didn't know the language. Why? Because unlike you and Ted they aren't assholes.
If I was going to go live in another country I had better learn the language.
So tell me. What language would you learn if you moved to Belgium? India has hundreds of languages. Does that mean that no one should ever move there becasue you can't master all of them? What about the people that already live there. Should they move out?
If you move to the US the official language is English.
Oh I see, you're just so full of shit that you really have no idea what you are talking about. It all makes sense now.

Hard to explain my exact, precise opinion on this, but here goes:
If you don't speak the language of whatever country, and don't make an effort to, and you're in a situation where you need to be able to speak English, you're going to get shafted, IMO.
If you make an effort to learn the language, at least, and you continue with that effort, I've no problem with you so long as you don't think yourself worthy of freebies because you're trying.
But if you say "I'm foreign, and therefore special" kiss my ass:)

I brought the same topic in this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=28489) and I got my head handed to me by the PC crowd. My take on the subject goes like this.
I lived in south Korea. I learned Korean and outside of the classroom, I interacted with people in Korean, and I had nothing but contempt for Americans who refused to learn the language. When I visited China, I spoke Putonghua, in Japan, Japanese, and so on. I have always made the effort to blend in as much as possible. Why is it wrong to expect people who come here to speak English?
Can you name a single person who came to the US and expected us to speak their language? Then shut up.
Well, the Spanish speakers in the DC area don't speak English. Cops, EMTs, social workers, and ER docs have to learn at least some Spanish to help people. I chat with the nice lady who cleans my office in Spanish because she can't speak a word of English. When I go to the ATM, the machine askes me if I want to use Spanish or English. Giant Supermarkets are running bilingual ads on the sides of buses here. Why? Because immigrants from Central and South America are coming here and not learning English, so the PC crowd is only too happy to accommodate them by turning America by diminishing the role of English and increasing the use of Spanish.
Now, get this straight, I despise Pat Buchanan and all his Nazi minions, so don't lump me with that SOB. I believe that America's strength comes from absorbing the best of other cultures into our own, but if new immigrants refuse to fit in and assimilate, that tears away at our national unity. It's a melting pot, so melt already!

I didn't say I didn't share the feeling of not having everything bilingual, but he plumb left all that out in his "Get the FUCK out of America." This country is founded on people that wanted a better life than they could get elsewhere. Not all of them spoke English. Ted Nugent proves what an ignorant person he is by ignoring that fact.
For the record my grandmother and her brothers and sisters were not allowed to speak German by their parents. The came to America to raise their children as Americans. They settled in German communities as many immigrants did with their own people of like backgrounds. They just never learned to speak English clearly.

GaWd, I don't know how Phil's French is, but his Latin is okay. De jure is a legal phrase meaning, roughly, "as a matter of law." It's the opposite of de facto, as a matter of fact (as a matter of fact). I assume Phil included de jure in his statement because an argument could be made that America does have a de facto official language -- English.
So while Ted Nugent may be the buffoon du jour and a de facto buffoon, he is not a de jure buffoon.

Can you name a single person who came to the US and expected us to speak their language? Then shut up.
I think I can name a person. I don't know their name, but my dad, a postal worker, encountered him one day.
My dad was always being solicited at work to take Spanish classes, "To accomodate our Spanish-speaking customers." My dad wanted to go home to his family, no thanks. Anyway, one day he was out picking up mail, and this man comes over to him. He starts asking a question in Spanish. My dad says he doesn't understand - doesn't speak Spanish. They guy repeats the question several times, in Spanish. My dad still indicates that he can't understand. Then the guy says (in perfectly understandable English) "You are guilty of discrimation because you don't speak Spanish." My dad was flabbergasted.
I remember chatting on the bus with a Spanish-speaking gentleman, who said in broken English "You learn Spanish, no?" He was really nice about it, but hey.
It is also disingenious to say that there are NO people who come to this country and don't get bent out of shape because they encounter people (like my dad) who don't speak their language. L.A. County seems to have it's share. I remember seeing a story on TV about some woman who was complaining about how she did not get the emergency medical attention she needed, because she did not speak English. She had been in the USA for over 10 years, never bothered to learn even basic English, yet she's complaining. Now, it's tragic and sad that she did not get the medical help she needed, but the distinct implication was that she felt it was the obligation of the medical people to learn her language, not the other way around.

If a person emigrates to another country it would only be in their best interest to learn the common language of that country. English is a difficult language and I work with a number of highly educated people who struggle with it on a daily basis. They often ask me how to spell one word or another or to help them with syntax. I appreciate their effort.
My grandfather was born in Sweden and was my only grandparent that did not speak English as a first language, he worked hard every day of his life, contributed to the community in which he lived, and learned english. Our country was founded by a great number of people who did not speak English but were willing to work their asses off. People who espouse ideas like Mr. Nugent's piss me off.

We're not talking about fine folks like your grandfather, who came here to become citizens, who contributed to America and learned English. We're talking about the flood of Central American immigrants who have refused to learn English and expect us to learn Spanish.
Our country was founded by a great number of people who did not speak English but were willing to work their asses off.
The American colonies were founded by England, and the first colonists spoke English. There were also colonies founded by Spain (Florida and the Southwestern states) and Louisiana was founded by the French, of course, but the dominant language of our nation has always been English.

Okay, I'll give that the United States has no official language, but the commonly accepted language is English.
Hea Oldscratch, yeah you, If you ever meet someone who does not speak English in this country, then unless they just got off the boat, their ignorance tells me that they don't want to learn English. Don't give me any shit that this doesn't happen. I work at a fire department in a small city in New Mexico, I run into patients all the time that don't speak English, and they get angry when I cannot speak Spanish. If you are going to come to The US, why not learn the commonly accepted language.
Also, I was just in Belgium a month ago. I am aware that there is a very small section on the Eastern edge of the country that speak German. Hell, I speak German. Also, don't dream to try and tell me that the French speaking population and the Dutch speaking population coexist w/o any discontent. Many of the Dutch speaking people I met looked down on their French speaking counterparts, the French the same of the Dutch.
Third, the message is a valid one. Again, it was not the most tactful way to give the message, but if you move to the US I expect some effort to learn English. If I were to move to Belgium I would make every effort to learn Dutch, French, and to improve my German. The vast majority of the population in Belgium do speak English, but that makes no difference. I should learn the other languages just to fit in. On our way to Belgium we stayed in Frankfurt. Again, sense I can speak some basic German, I made every effort to speak in German to anyone outside of my group. I could tell that the effort was appreciated.
Oh, and its late; I'm tired, so indulge me please. What the hell is...
"It's about as valid as suggesting we start pogroms against
the Hmong"
Pogroms? Hmong? I'm not familiar with those words. See, even I am still learning English.
You may wonder why I chose to learn German instead of Spanish, living in New Mexico. My family also migrated to the US 4 generations ago. My mother's family spoke German, my father's Finnish. My grandmother spoke both fluent Finnish and English. I chose to learn German as part of my family's culture. No one should expect for their language to die. They can contact others that speak their same language, but it's plain irresponsible to not make an attempt to learn English.

Doesn't everybody think (I hope this is the place for this and I won't get accused of "nitpicking" or being a "grammar nazi") that when the majority of native American-English speakers--there is a difference--can't use it properly, we might think about removing the beams from our own eyes? Geez, folks, English is a difficult language in the first place, since it's Germanic in nature and Latinate in grammar, but also since American-English borrows from so many other languages. Think about trying to make a good-looking dress from a patchwork quilt.
The kind of thing I hear most often, however, is "Don't y'all know no English?" Hell, that person doesn't know no English. Give those who want to learn time, and for those who don't, and there are some, let them live in their barrios and Chinatowns and be unable to interact with American society at large.
Why do we, as Americans as a whole rather than SDMBers, feel that the whole world has to do what we say? If a Korean thinks that he or she can function without learning English, why should we either prove that person wrong or force that person to learn a language that will never be used outside the neighborhood?

Hell, I don't care if someone doesn't learn English. You're right - if they can live in their own little community, isolated, and are content, more power to 'em. What do I care?
The thing that bothers me are the people who expect us to learn their language. Like the guy who accused my postal-worker father of "discrimiation" because my dad didn't speak Spanish. Or the woman who had been in the US for over TEN years, but bitched because emergency medical people didn't speak her language.
I also remember hearing on the news about a family who literally (LITERALLY) blew their house up, by setting off too many bug bombs at once in their house. They were fine, but the bugs didn't go away (how's that for irony), and their house was totalled. The reason they didn't know that they couldn't use that many bug bombs at once? The bug bomb cans had cautions for use and instructions printed in English. Now, I didn't hear anything about these people complaining about the instructions not being in Spanish, but still! Not learning the language of the country you are in, and just barrelling on ahead, setting off bug bombs and such, can be a pretty risky thing. I'm sure the neighbors of this bug-bomb-exploding family were not too thrilled with what happened.
The thing I'd like to know is - how many languages should we be expected to learn? I have read that in L.A. County, there are about 80 different languages spoken. Is anyone expecting us to learn them ALL, so that the people who come here won't have to learn one other language, English? Isn't it more logical to just do it the other way around?

Here in Houston, Nugent was barred from performing because of his statements. I don't agree with his tactlessness, but I do agree with his sentiments. People who come here should at least try to learn English. They should not *expect* anyone to be bi-lingual. I disagree with bi-lingual teaching in public schools, if they are not encouraging everyone to learn English as their primary language.

Is there a bi-lingual education program that doesn't try and teach english? That would make it mono-lingual wouldn't it. Can you point to a bi-lingual program that encourages French, Ferengi? What the hell are you talking about?!
Personally I disagree woth bi-lingual teaching in public schools, if they are slaughtering and eating the kids.

good evening friends,
ted nugent made a stop here in omaha nebraska today. he showed up at a benefit for the legal defense fund of an omaha police officer. the police officer is under investigation by the grand jury in the shooting death of an unarmed car thief.
"i truly salute our brave warriors, the men and women of law enforcement." nugent said, "they put their lives on the line every day."

He said that if you don't speak English you should get out of America. I know, I know, he says things to be controversial. It's his "thing". Dammit, I paid for the ticket that paid his salary, I don't know why I have to expect to be insulted...[long discourse about ancestors, insults, Germany, and dirty whores deleted]
Um.....maybe my grasp of English is still lacking, but I fail to see how he insulted you. He said people who don't speak English should get out of here; You claim to be insulted, then go off to rail on about your ancestors (sounding an awful lot like George Jefferson "I was born the son of a sharecropper...").
But you seem to speak English reasonably well. So how the hell is his comment applicable to you at all?!
Fucking people, can't even understand plain English.
I thank God you never saw a copy of "Speak English Or Die" from S.O.D. while you were looking for your favorites from Savage Garden...We might have a replay of Tipper & the record-labelers from the 80s.
And I could never state it as eloquently as Reservoir Dog did, but come on. Did you really expect 4:00 tea, Political Correctness, and Queen's English from somebody called "The Motor City Madman"??????? Be real!

Horse & cattle rustling are still capital offenses in most western states that have much agriculture. Stealing a car should be the same.
