For details on how this all started check out this thread:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=33299

I'm starting this new thread because, frankly, my presence is too often ignored on this board.

The place: El Viejo Yayo 40 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

The time: After work, of course!

Attendees:
Definite-- Houseman, Biggil, Wonko the Sane, Soulsling.
Tentative-- Lux Fiat, stuyguy, Green Bean and Uke Ike.

Please post if you are coming, or if your not, or if you wish you were. Show me love please, I'm feeling neglected.

P.S., I've got to make reservation a few days ahead, so I'd like a head count.

Sorry, hon, Brooklyn's a little too far for me. Manhattan, si. Brooklyn, no.

But I'll be there in spirit. Have fun!

Well, I'm actually moving out of brooklyn the week prior, but, if possible, I'll be there.

Keep this thread afloat.

Hey! I live in Brooklyn! Am I invited?

Biggirl
08-27-2000, 10:24 PM
DAVE-- scaredy cat! Park Slope is only two stops away from Manhattan on the D train.

Moe-- Why would you want to leave our splendid little town?

capacitor-- the more, the doper!

The 15th? That's a Friday, is it not? I work second shift, so I will not be able to throw down with everyone, since I don't get off work until about midnight. My heart is heavy, but I hope y'all will raise a glass for me in my absence.

So I should park in Manhattan and take a train to Brooklyn? This sounds more complicated than I care to get involved in, but I'll think about it. If you can rustle up good driving directions, then I'm a definite maybe.

Hey Biggirl - It was nice to see you on the street this morning! Congrats on the new job.

As you know, I won't be able to make it (damn), but I hope you guys have a great time.

Green Bean
08-28-2000, 08:19 AM
I'll be there. Is it a Friday? What's the cross street of the restaurant?

I'll see if I can convince Billdo to abandon his wild bohemian lifestyle for an evening to accompany me,

Davewoo: Where are you coming from? I drive to to Park Slope all the time, and it's easy. Easier than getting into Manhattan, that's for sure!

Biggirl: Where'd Pink Slinky go? I obviously missed something.

Houseman
08-28-2000, 07:43 PM
Green Bean -- Biggirl ate Pink Slinky with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

SaxFace -- You know I'm bummed.

Dave -- Come on, you can do it. I have faith in your navagational skills.

Cajun Man -- Are you and Dr.Matrix comming? It won't be the same without youse guys. (Hey, it's Brooklyn)

Green Bean and, possibly Billdo. Green, have you convinced DAVEW that it is safe to wander out of Manhattan?
Cajun Man and Dr. Matrix
Wonko the Sane and Chris.
If you're coming and not on the list, please post here. If you are not coming and are on the list, you better not tell me 'cause it'll just make me sad.

Dave hasn't replied yet telling me where he is coming from, so I can't tell him how easy it is to get to the Slope from there.

What time we doin' this thing? (I have to be in PA early the next morning.)

Dinnertime!

I figure around 7:30 or so. Does anyone have any specific time requests?

Green Bean
09-03-2000, 09:21 PM
Yeah. Earlier is better for me. I was going to come straight from work (my class is over at 5).

O.K. then! Who else for moving it foreward? Gotta get a consensus.

Or do you mean this coming Friday? Kinda short notice. Still, if we can get a mini-thing going maybe we can fit into Sweet Mama's.

He (meaning ME, Ukulele Ike, who is terrifically flattered by the attention he garnered) said BACK a week. THIS weekend I'll be in DENVER.

Oh, boy. Wait, is Kris the one that ate the cat that swollowed the rat that ate the fly? Where's Billdo when you need someone to chuckle at an inside joke? Why haven't I dropped this annoying habit of speaking only in question form?

Have fun kiddos, this doesn't excuse yall from getting together the next time I happen to breeze into town, does it?

Biggirl
09-06-2000, 06:39 PM
I'm very confused. As far as I can tell Uke will be out of town both on the 8th and the 15th. However, I've had a few people who said moving it up (or down, this is the part that's confusing me) a week would be good.

Can someone please mention a date with a number in it so's I can get it together? Sax is available the day after tomorrow (9/8). Show of hands here. Whose for the 8th? (I'd personally love to have both Sax and Uke). I haven't made reservations yet and can easily change plans.

I hope everyone is checking this thread!

I can't do the eighth, but the weekend after that (and any conceivable weekends after that) I'm all in.

Yeah yeah, NJ Transit in da HoUSE!

Ukulele Ike
09-06-2000, 09:20 PM
Well, I'd love to have you, too.

I'm in Denver on the 8th, and in Cleveland on the 15th. On the 23rd and the 24th and pretty much thereafter, I hope to be in Brooklyn. Howzatsound?

Biggirl
09-07-2000, 06:15 PM
All right folks, this is what I'm gonna do. I'm still reserving a table for the 15th because I don't have the time, energy or inclination to e-mail everyone who said they were coming to Brooklyn on that day. So if you are coming still come.

Since I, myself, would love to hang out with Uke and Sax and I'm partial to dark, smokey bars I'm open to any type of drinking on any other day except the 23rd.

BTW, this was harder than it looked, folks!

MannyL
09-07-2000, 06:20 PM
The 15th? Dang thats a Friday and I work until 9 in South/Central NJ no way can I make it in. I'm normally free on weekends, but this weekend I'm going up to Boston, and the weekend of the 22nd I'll be in Florida

This is the Kris that was involved with IanTheTerrible.com and the Moof. Weird thing is, She and I are going to IanTheTerrible's wedding this weekend, because the Moof.... Dammit, it's too complicated, but at least I don't have to drive to the wedding myself. Ugh.

And yes, we are waiting with baited breath for your return to Gotham.

I will be in Connecticut, at work, shaking my fist at the sky, and cursing the Dopers who are having fun whilst I earn my paycheck.

Dante could've made a career out of my life.

No, seriously, I love you all.

Ukulele Ike
09-13-2000, 10:25 AM
Okay...Lux will be in Connecticut, I'll be in Cleveland, Eve will be in Cucamonga...we'll be selling cuchifritos, caricatures, and chiaroscuro, and marrying Christine, Caledonia, and Constantino.

So who's going to be in Brooklyn?

Wonko The Sane
09-13-2000, 03:16 PM
Could some swell guy/gal familiar with the subway give a Wonko some help? I'll be taking the path into the city, and want to get some directions using the subway or some other kind of public transportation.

Help!

Ukulele Ike
09-13-2000, 03:26 PM
Okay, that PATH train will get you to Christopher Street and Seventh Avenue in the lovely West Village. Jump on the West Side IRT downtown local (the 1 or the 9 train...color code RED). Transfer at Chambers Street to the downtown express (the 2 or the 3 train...color code still RED) across the platform. Ride this down to Wall Street (last station stop in Manhattan) then lickety-split under the East River to Clark Street (first station stop in Brooklyn), past Borough Hall, Hoyt Street, Nevins Street, Atlantic Avenue, Bergen Street, Grand Army Plaza! Out at Grand Army, up the stairs, gawk at the huge and vaguely Nuremburg-ish Memorial Arch for the Union Dead, then stroll down scenic Flatbush Avenue to Fifth, and start looking for the restaurant.

BigGirl, should he get out at Bergen? Is that closer to Fifth? I'd hate for Wonko to miss the Arch...I have had SUCH vivid nightmares about that Arch...

stuyguy
09-13-2000, 03:42 PM
Why does the arch give you nightmares, Uke? Feeling guilty about something, are you? As you already know, I think the thing is magnificent, especially now that it's been polished and all. (Do you recall back in the 60s or 70s when the top statue(s) nearly fell off the thing!?! It was following a severe storm, I believe.)

Hey, while I've got your attention, that was a way cool link regarding the UI who inspired your name. I had heard of him, but had no idea he was the voice of Jimminy Cricket! And the poor SOB died in lonely poverty? What a heartbreaking tale.

FLOYD COLLINS NEWS FLASH: a few months back I had a couple of dates with a gal who claimed to have a piece of the rock that pinned Floyd Collins. A mutual friend told me today that said rock-girl is sending it to me as part of her moving day purging! I'll keep you posted...

Uke, you been makin' time with Caledonia? Pistols at dawn, sir!

Cajun Man
09-13-2000, 05:05 PM
Yo, Ike! Why are you trying to get our friend Wonko lost? Don't you like him? ;)

Wonko, take the path train to 14th St. (at 6th Ave). Get off and walk west 1 block to 7th Ave and 14th St. Take the 2 or 3 train (downtown) to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Then, follow Biggirl's directions.

Train directions: The 2, 3, 4, 5, D or Q to Atlantic Ave. The N, R or B to Pacific Street. If you are not on the N, R or B follow the signs to those trains, then get out of the station. You will be on Pacific Street and 4th Ave. Walk one block over to Dean St., then one block up to 5th Ave. If you find yourself walking downhill, you are going in the wrong direction.

Biggirl
09-13-2000, 05:12 PM
Bergen is much closer! If you can get to the World Trade Center, take the N or R to Pacific. This is just 3 short blocks away.

You will be on 4th Ave. Walk to Dean (1 block). Walk up to 5th Ave (1 block). You'll see the restaurant right there on 5th between Dean and Bergen.

If you take the 2 or 3 to Bergen, you will be on Flatbush. Walk down Bergen to 5th. Again you'll see it.

The bad news is that my poor Spot hurt his foot and had to have surgery yesterday. His dewclaw was removed. :( But he's recovering nicely. I won't be able to go on my planned trip this weekend so I can take care of him, so the good news is that I don't have to leave the dopefest early. The other bad news is that my dear husband won't be joining us so he can stay with Spot.

What time are things getting underway?

Lux Fiat: Couldn't help myself, man. What makes her big head so hot?

Cajun Man: Just trying to make things a little more interesting for our pal, that's all. Besides, if he takes your directions, Wonko won't see the ARCH!

stuy: The Arch gives me nightmares because...ummm...hard to say. I love colossal statuary and Brutalist architecture as a rule; give me something huge and anthropomorphic and overbearing and I get all shivery. That's why I love walking around in Paris ("Look! There's a giant Archangel Michael slaying a dragon! And it's big as a fucking HOUSE!"), and I wish there was a lot more of that sort of thing in the U.S. But sometimes, around four in the morning, I wake up in a cold sweat after dreaming about massive winged goddesses and enormous sword-wielding personifications of Germania crashing down on my head.
