My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first child and my parents' first grandchild (yay!). Since my mom's birthday is next month, I was thinking about getting her a gift to celebrate her upcoming grandparent-hood.
However, the baby's not due until October, and will only be three months along by the time my mom's birthday rolls around. There's still a long time to go, and my superstitious side has kicked in with a vengeance since they announced the pregnancy, so I'd be afraid of hurting her feelings if they ever lost the baby. Is it too early to get her a gift like this? And if not, what would you recommend - books, jewelry, knickknacks, etc.?

How about a beginner's scrapbooking kit, if she's not already a scrapper?

A collection of cookie/cake/candy recipies, to stuff the little newcomer with?

A T-shirt that says:
----> I'm with Sweetie-pie
(only kidding)

A children's picture book, or a story book, especially either a brand new book or a classic that she can share with the grandchild. I wouldn't worry too much about it being appropriate for a three-month old, the idea is that it is a book she can share at the appropriate time.

OOPS! While I still think that a book is an appropriate gift--I did reread the OP after posting and now realize that baby will still be in the womb on the birthday in question--so picking a book that baby is old enough to appreciate is really a silly idea

My MIL actually had a "Grandma Shower" at her place of work. Sheesh!
Anyway, a couple of the things she got were helpful:
Big blanket for baby to play on, on the floor when at her house
An umbrella stroller (she had one before we did!)
Varied toys/books/stuffed things to stay at her house
Inexpensive feeding seat
That's all I can remember now. It *has* been 4.5 years, you know!
Congrats on your upcoming new position as Auntie (?, uncle?)!

Newish grandma here...
If she hasn't got one a camera is a really good thing or if she already has one, a photo album, picture frames, things like that. I've got one of those bouncey seats that comes in handy and recently a little thing called a bumbo seat (http://www.bumboseat.com/adwords/bumbowords1.html) which has many uses. I think that they are sold at some Target stores.
A gift card for a toy store or baby shop might be nice too.
