I don't know why I want to know this, but I do. What are some good songs about, or referencing, shoes?

Here are some of my favorites:

Those Shoes (Eagles)You just want someone to talk to.
They just want to get their hands on you.
You get whatever you choose.
Oh, no you can't do that,
Once you started wearing those shoes.Pretzel Logic (Steely Dan)I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said: "You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?"

Red Shoes (Tom Waits)

She wore red shoes by the drugstore
As the rain splashed the nickel
Spilled like chablis along the midway
Theres a little bluejay
In a red dress, on a sad night

Honey I walked so doggone much since you set me free

In These Shoes? Kirsty MacColl

So I was sitting at a bar in Guadalajara
In walks a guy with a faraway look in his eyes
He said "I've got a powerful horse outside
climb on the back i'll take you for a ride.
I know a little place we can get there
before the break of day."
I said "in these shoes? No way Jose."
I said "honey, let's stay right here."

Not technically shoes, but definitely footwear:

How bout Fairies Wear Boots?

Oh - if we're talking about good songs, Beck (Jeff, for you younguns) seemed to have a thang about Led and Spanish Boots.

If you're talking about bad shoe songs, you can't forget These Christmas Shoes or whatever the hell it's called. If Jesus is Lord, I don't think He's going to care if you're wearing fancy shoes when you get to Heaven.

"Flaming Red," by Patty Griffin:
Wore my red shoes
Wore my red shoes again
Getting worn out from
All of the wandering
Worn out and holy
Holy as Jesus

Quality Shoe, from Mark Knopfler's record The Ragpicker's Dream is a fun song on what I think is Knopfler's best solo album.

You got your toecaps reinforced with steel
Hard-wearing sole and heel
Make those tired feet feel like new
Take your pick, black or brown
Great for the country or the man in town
You're gonna need a quality shoe.

My Shoes (The Bobs)
My shoes went out with a pair of red high heels last night
My girlfriend just won't understand it
She thinks that I'm the one to blame, but that's not right
My shoes are in control, they planned it
For years my shoes have been my friends
I've taken them around the world and to its ends
Now they're taking me....

I am shocked--shocked!!!--that I cannot find the lyrics to the Lemon Pipers' sublime The Shoemaker of Leatherwear Square anywhere on the web. The same album on which that song appears also includes Shoeshine Boy, so it would seem that the Pipers had their minds on their feet. Or something.

He wears a farmer's shirt, he wears a farmer's hat.
He wears a farmer's pants, he wears a farmer's shoes,
And every Sunday evening, he reads The Farmer's News."

Elvis Presley - Kentucky Rain

Claudja Barry - Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes

Many artists - Chattanooga Shoeshine Boy

Almost fits the criteria: John Lennon's song "Meat City" started out as a demo called "Shoeshine."

Mitch Ryder's "Devil with a Blue Dress On":
Wearin' a wig hat and shades to match
She's got high-heel shoes and an alligator hat.

Old-timey bluegrass tune: "My Walkin' Shoes Don't Fit Me Anymore"

From Fats Domino:

"Wave after wave of pretty girls in high-heeled shoes
And there'd be no more than one or two."
-- Fountains of Wayne, Some Girls Tell Lies

"Put on your high heeled sneakers and put your wig hat on your head
May not win a prize, I'm pretty sure you're gonna knock them dead."

From Fats Domino:
It's time I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm going to need two pair of shoes
When I get through walkin' to you
When I get back to New Orleans
He's going to need two pairs of shoes when he "gets through walkin' these blues." If you take into account the subject matter of the song, his girl used to be his honey, 'til she took all his money. Now he's poor and love-less and has no alternative but to walk back to New Orleans, his home.

It was fresh on my mind because I recently got the Fats Domino box set.

Elton John "The Boy in the Red Shoes" from his underrated newer-ish album Songs From the West Coast

I'm ashamed to suggest Kenny Loggins "Footloose" from the movie (and Broadway show) of the same name.

The Other Shoe - Old 97s

One old brown shoe falls in slow motion,
And the bedsprings hover right above your head,
As bed springs do, when you're beneath them.
Someone else just climbed into your bed.

By the time she thought you'd probably got to Phoenix,
She'd arranged for your shoes to be filled.
Well you've got your pride, and a blue-steel '45,
And you're waiting for the other shoe to fall.

Off topic a little more, I thought this was a great little nod to Sports Night, in which Huffman's character Dana got the group kicked out of a bar where they were serving big blue drinks for half off ("I'm not promoting the economic upside so much as I am the chance to drink something big and blue."), and then proceeded to pump the music in their offices and have an impromptu dance party.

Only two threads and yet no mention of that most famous of shoe songs, Elvis Presley's Blue Suede Shoes?

Actually, Elvis sang this to the top of the charts, but it's really Carl Perkins's song. Elvis always felt Carl deserved more credit for it.

I walk and cry while my heartbeat

My heart keeps aching for you

Gonna find me a brand new girl

Don’t wear no Doc Martens
Can’t wear no Birkenstocks
Just a crummy old pair of chuka boots and a smelly old pair of socks…

I see "Your Nashville Sneakers" by The Guess Who was already mentioned. They have another one, called "Those Show Biz Shoes". Amazing song!

Did anybody mention "High Heel Sneakers"? Written by Higgenbotham, performed by a bunch of different acts, including the Stones and the Dead.

(Aside to John Carter of Mars: these Nashville sneakers were in Toomer's Drugstore for a BLT and a limeade last week.)

Anyone remember Golden Slippers? That's an old one.

I was last in Toomer's during the Wreck Tech parade in September. Good parade, good lemonade, but the game turned sour.

"Oh, dem golden slippers
Golden slippers I'm gwine ta' wear
Ta' walk dem golden streets..."

Do you by any chance mean Thirsty Boots (http://web.cecs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs/lyrics/thirsty-boots.html) by Eric Andersen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Andersen)?
:smack: Oh, yeah. Brainfade, that. Haven't heard that album in a coon's age.

Three contributions:

Jerry Jeff Walker,

Charlie Dunn, he's the one to see
Charlie Dunn boots that are on my feet
It makes Charlie real pleased
To see me walkin' with ease
Charlie Dunn--he's the one to see

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

I blew out my flip flop
Stepped on pop top
Cut my heal had to head on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on...

And for those whose minds are a bit twisted,

Shoo fly, don't bother me
Shoo fly don't bother me
Shoo fly don't bother me
Cuz I belong to somebody

If we're going for really nebulous references, look for just about any song that uses the word "blues." They have to rhyme it with something.

"Old man rhythm is in my shoes
There's no use in sittin' and singin' the blues
Be my guest, you've got nothing to lose
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise
Oo wee, oo wee baby,,,"

The pleasure is mine. Was it you who had "she puts the mascara on the eye of the storm" as your .sig?Nope, wasn't me; must be another wacko around. :)

(Anyone remember Golden Slippers? That's an old one.

The guy who wrote post #68 apparently knows the tune. :D

This film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076582/) takes its title from the infamous Earl Butz comment that forced Gerald Ford's Secretary of Agriculture to resign. The film featured a song whose lyrics included Butz's three-item list. (http://tafkac.org/celebrities/butz_racist_remark.html) (Second link contains potentially NSFW language.) Incidentally, Butz is still not only alive, but active at the age of 96 -- he attends Kiwanis meetings with a couple of local guys I know.

You can scratch up my records, you can drink my booze
But baby, please don't wear those shoes
You can make me an offer I can't refuse
But darling, please don't wear those shoes
You can play your bongos while I'm trying to snooze
But honey, please don't wear those shoes
You can expose yourself on the six o' clock news
But please, please don't wear those shoes

I said oh, no...oh, no...oh, no, don't wear those shoes
I said oh, no...oh, no...oh, no, don't wear those shoes...

Weird Al Yankovic, "Don't Wear Those Shoes" :D

John Denver did a version of this too. And googling it looks like plenty of others! Arlo Guthrie, Phil Ochs, John Gorka...
