When I've been in England we hardly used a car- used the tube to get around London, the train to get between towns (London to York, York to Liverpool etc), or just walked.


It's very hard in the US to find other ways to get around. Does gas price have an impact on car usage?

You're right that I'm in the UK (my 'location' is easy to Google ;) )...

Tourists have it easy! London is easy without a car, and most other tourist destinations are too. However, if you choose to live in the sticks, the only option is a car. I clock up about 300 miles a week through my job, and that's through travelling to various schools within the county I live in. But for anything long-distance, I'd automatically take the train, and I don't think I'd even consider any other option (actually, even if I did, I'd dismiss them as too expensive).

Yes, fuel costs have an impact on everyday life. But we're familiar with other higher costs, too (17.5% sales tax, and a general higher cost of living) so the cost of fuel is something most people can deal with.

We're not. We're doing it tough.

Although we have much cheaper fuel than England, it's more expensive than the States, and is double what it was about eight years ago. When this huge price rise hit us, we were left looking silly with big sprawling suburban cities, awful public transport, large 4 litre 6 cylinder cars and 4WDs, and towns hundred of miles apart.

I used to drive to see my mum, 360 kilometres away. Now I'd take the train and bus, or maybe even fly.

The airlines are doing really well here now. Everyone flies everywhere.

I just saw a Yahoo headline that says gas will go up another 11% over the summer here in the US. :smack:

The implications are widespread, including school budgets! I know in our hometown, bus costs are one of the biggest single line item on the budget, along with salaries.

Here in Youngstown, Ohio, it is $2.79 to $2.99 a gallon. Last week, it was $2.45 to $2.65 a gallon at the gas station where I work.

AUD$1.15/litre here in South-East Queensland at the moment for standard 91 Octane, and about AUD$1.30/litre for the Premium (98 Octane) stuff.

LPG is about AUD$0.67c/litre, and Diesel is about AUD$1.41/litre.

It's not too bad if you've got a reasonably fuel efficient car, but people with V6s, V8s, and 4WDs are really getting hit in the pocket at the moment...

Of course, it's not just the people driving cars who are being hit.

It also means that people aren't doing the trips (as Loaded mentioned in a previous post). I was chatting to a bloke in Pooncarie the other day (a town in the middle of nowhere on the way to the arse-end of nowhere) and he commented that normally at this time of year there would have been at least twenty tourist cars through the town by lunchtime. He hadn't seen one. :(

Australia is a big country, and most people thought nought about driving hundreds or even a couple of thousand km for a holiday jaunt in the past. Now though, when the cost of fuel exceeds your accomodation expenses many-fold, is it any wonder that people are staying closer to home...........and the little towns suffer.

Oh, here in Melbourne (and within 100km) the price is around $1.28 (AUD) per litre.

It’s becoming a problem for the middleman, too. A friend who is an oil jobber tells me that a gas transport load represents about $22,000 and that he has two small town convenience stores that are into him for $150,000 each. With oil companies posting astounding profits we can anticipate a reckonings this fall if something doesn’t change pretty soon, simply because the cost of gasoline will have to be spread across the economy and it’s bound to show up as increased cost for just about everything from lettice to home loans.
