View Full Version : A Google-Username Game!

Revenant Threshold
05-03-2006, 06:48 PM
Well, not really a game. More an interesting thing.

Put your username into Google. Remember to use " " if it's more than one word, like mine. If you use more than one username for different places, stick them all in (since the SDMB isn't Googleable).

How many links until the (screenname) is you? For me;

Revenant Threshold - No links.

shadeedge (my usual username) - 1st link is me. And in fact, all links that aren't coding are me. Hooray for uniqueness! Also curses as my annoying teenage years are exposed.

Anaamika
05-03-2006, 07:02 PM
Wow...er. I put in Anaamika, and the 3rd link no less was my OKcupid profile, which I keep around to take tests. Other than that, I went through a bunch of pages (8) before I got bored.

My normal username, Elenia, comes up around link number...10, for the story I posted on "I'm Not Sorry".

Both places I wouldn't necessarily expected to have linked so easily!

BrattiAtti
05-03-2006, 07:04 PM
BrattiAtti fetches 68 results - all me. A few nanowrimo posts, a whole lotta VU gin tournaments, and some websites relating to here (dopefests, anagram user name drawings, Hal Briston's baby pool).

A search for my first online username yields 136 results. A few are me. Nothing embarrassing... on the first four pages, anyways.

pinkfreud
05-03-2006, 07:24 PM
My case is rather unusual. Google indexes its own Google Answers service. Since I have answered more than 2000 questions and posted more than 15000 comments on Google Answers, a Google search for pinkfreud produces thousands of hits that apply to me.

Governor Quinn
05-03-2006, 07:42 PM
In the first ten pages of Google results, none were a reference to me in any way, and only a few dealt with the source of my username.

Antigen
05-03-2006, 07:45 PM
Googling my name is pretty much useless. My own fault for using a regular old word for a username.

ErinPuff
05-03-2006, 08:52 PM
Most of the results are me, including the first one. One that isn't is this bit of glurgy writing (http://www.cs.bilkent.edu.tr/~david/derya/storys5/story5827.htm). That's really, really not me.

dogbutler
05-03-2006, 09:42 PM
4 of the 1st 10 are me.
#3 ismy homepage (http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&groupid=18749&ck=)
#4 is my fathom profile (http://fff.fathom.org/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=1150)

Lionne
05-03-2006, 10:04 PM
The very first and second links are to my myspace profile...every other link was to other people.
It's weird seeing how many people have my screenname. There's only one LunaV!

Scarlett67
05-03-2006, 10:21 PM
4th one is me (my Fathom profile).

I don't live in Brisbane, I'm not a divorced RN looking for love (although I *am* a 38-year-old white female with brown hair), and I'm not a claims adjuster in LA. My name is not Joyce Faught. I've never quit smoking, because I never started (and never will). I *am* an awesome eBayer, but under a different name and only occasionally -- that Scarlett's not me.

Hal Briston
05-03-2006, 10:27 PM
BrattiAtti fetches 68 results - all me. A few nanowrimo posts, a whole lotta VU gin tournaments, and some websites relating to here (dopefests, anagram user name drawings, Hal Briston's baby pool).I'm guessing a number of dopers would appear as hits on my site. My #1 and #2 results were the anagramed username cartoon page and the baby pool, respectively.

Team of Scientists yields some two million results, so I'm not gonna bother with that one.

I googled elnino710, my AIM screeny, and I got this (http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:FV0qk9Kbo3YJ:freefour.dtdns.net/infos.php%3Fid%3D4202+elnino710&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2&client=firefox-a) . I'm a little weirded out. It's an archive of a bunch of my AIM profiles starting in September '04 and ending in February '05. Why are my profiles on there? I searched around, and it looks like the guy has quite a few screen names archived. Very strange.

At least the page isn't actually active anymore. The one I linked to is cached by Google.

05-03-2006, 11:10 PM
Um, I should tell you those profiles are mostly inane quotes and pop culture references lest you actually read some of them.

Ruffian
05-03-2006, 11:12 PM
About 2,540,000 hits for "ruffian" here.

Not coincidentally, the majority of the first few pages are about Ruffian (http://www.equinenet.org/heroes/ruffian.html).

Sattua
05-03-2006, 11:19 PM
Oops. Almost all of the hits are in Finnish. Apparently, in Finnish, "sattua" means to hit something or to hurt oneself. That's not how I meant it at all... I took it as a variant of "sattva," ultimate physical bliss.

Kiminy
05-03-2006, 11:20 PM
I get 565 hits on my nick.

I first "invented" this nick about 6-7 years ago, when my previous nick had gotten too widely used by other people. It was also mine long enough for me to lay claim on hotmail, excite, and lycos before other people started using it before I could get there.

However, browsing through the first few pages of Google hits, the majority have nothing to do with me at all (I do NOT have a MySpace page!). Some are from Usenet postings made before Google took that over, but mostly by my husband (we used a shared e-mail account back then).

I did manage to get GMail fast enough to claim kiminy@gmail.com, but I lost out on Yahoo.

Rhiannon8404
05-03-2006, 11:27 PM
All the 177 hits were me. Nearly all are post to MousePad.

Khadro
05-03-2006, 11:34 PM
My username here returned nothing related to me. At least not in the first 100 results. Stupid generic, if non-english, word.

The other username I use, "Mordecai Chalk" returns 35 results (78 with some double-up omissions as Google does), and I belong to 7 of those, including the first one.

I actually, and obviously, come before the origin of that name, which is a comic book character. I did not, at the time of the adoption know where the name came from, despite having read the comic. I had forgotten all about the character, and my mind brought up these two words that sounded pretty good together. Two years later, I was reading the comic again, and Bam! there I was in my 4-color process glory.

Mostly they are profiles, but the first one is my now discontinued (or moved) blog from my holiday last year... that never quite got finished.

Miss Purl McKnittington
05-03-2006, 11:35 PM
Scary world. I never thought I'd have such a large internet presence that all my usernames would be on the first page of a Google search. Well, my SDMB name I can understand, since I'm the only one on the internet who uses it, apparently. And that's fine by me. But my usernames on Livejournal? (frenchified, loathlylady, and la_vie_tricote for the curious. The links are the seventh, seventh, and first hits, respectively.) Holy hell. I feel famous!

Critical Mass
05-03-2006, 11:44 PM
17,100,000 results (in 0.3 seconds!)

I'll get back to you when I've found something about me.

rinni
05-04-2006, 12:06 AM
My username, rinni, brings up my MySpace on the first page, which is NOT the one with the username of rinni - someone raced me to rinni and I had to be rinniroo!

It also brings up my QuickKwiz profile and a link to the one and only quiz I made: "Who thinks of your butt?"

When I first started using this username, it wasn't so common - now everyone and their dog is a rinni :(

cruel butterfly
05-04-2006, 01:53 AM
The first of six or seven pages of results listed references to something involving cruel butterfly and "swords."

Then, by the time I got to the last page, it was all about sex toys and lesbian erotica.

None of the items had anything to do with me personally. Just in case you were wondering.

Kamino Neko
05-04-2006, 02:07 AM
For Tengu - 1.64 million. Not a single one is me.

For Nekogami, which I use more often, I'm #3 of 141,000.

For Kamino Neko (my standard username) every single hit is either me, or a reference to me. (697, mostly message board posts, but a few from the Religion of Superheroes site which copied a couple discussions I was involved in.)

Mudshark
05-04-2006, 02:08 AM
Well, since this is the only place I use Mudshark I don't have any results.

However, with my AIM screenname, MrGreenGenes04, all results are me.

Kamino Neko
05-04-2006, 02:16 AM
For Nekogami, which I use more often, I'm #3 of 141,000.

Mistyped. I'm #4, not #3. The AMVs are mine, the comic is not.

BadBadger
05-04-2006, 02:24 AM
515 hits here.
Mainly other peoples profiles, but 4th one made me chuckle:

"BadBadger · Initiate in The Halls of Beerdom"

Considering how I feel this morning, I'd say that's quite apt.

Hostile Dialect
05-04-2006, 02:51 AM
You better believe it'd take a while to get to me, brother.

Another username I've used for about a year only returns hits related to me. That's pretty rad.

And another returns more unrelated hits than I'd expect, but I seem to be the focus of a good number of them. Many of them quite nasty...I didn't really fit in in the groups I used that name on, and wasn't well liked, and a lot of people felt the need to be vocal about it.

grimpixie
05-04-2006, 03:46 AM
For me, its mostly posts/profiles on assorted messageboards that I have registered with over the years, and a couple of swines who have stolen my online identity and are using it elsewhere - curse them!!

HOWEVER, the one thing it did find me was the SDMB Briston Baby Pool (http://www.sirblah.com/misc/SDMBpool/SDMBbabypoolresults.htm) that Hal Briston and kittenlm put together sometime back to get us all to guess the details of their expected one. I never saw the results of that pool - perhaps I missed the thread.

05-04-2006, 03:55 AM
No.

Dervorin
05-04-2006, 04:49 AM
4. It's a link to my profile on a message board which I lurked on but never really got into. No hits to me here, though.

Mindfield
05-04-2006, 08:34 AM
Took me 14 pages to find me, and for some reason it ends up being my Digital Press profile (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=3032) despite the fact that DP is one of the places I post the least on.

swampbear
05-04-2006, 08:56 AM
Hits three and four on the first page link my user name to Skip's Magic Board. I don't get a SDMB mention til page two.

fishbicycle
05-04-2006, 09:26 AM
There are 525 entries for fishbicycle, but only two of them refer to this one. One is about my membership on another board, and the other is where someone copied and pasted part of one of my posts and put it on her blog because she liked it. The rest are some other fishbicycles, particularly the one into BDSM. I don't have a blog, and I've never sold anything on eBay.

Ragiel
05-04-2006, 10:30 AM
Last time I checked, I was about the 12th or 13th Ragiel listed. It linked to some of my quizzes on FunTrivia.com. :)

Wilson
05-04-2006, 01:17 PM
437 million. I'm not going through them all... The only user names I know of that top that count are Demo and lee.

My normal handle comes up with two pages, none of which are me. Guess I'm more or a lurker then joiner pretty much everywhere...

...

On preview, I've found another user name that way surpasses my count - Seven. Harumph. Maybe I should change my user name to and.

Gordon Urquhart
05-04-2006, 01:27 PM
Huh. Almost 15,000 hits, and a reference to the Gordon Urquhart that inspired my screen name didn't appear until the fifth page.

I doubt that I'll appear as "Gordon Urquhart" on Google -- this is the only messageboard I've ever used, and I'm pretty new to these here parts.

Sternvogel
05-04-2006, 01:49 PM
As of now, the first four results for Sternvogel represent my work, as do the seventh and eighth hits. And that's just the first page...

ninevah
05-04-2006, 06:42 PM
For ninevah, I get a kajillion results because it is the name of an ancient Assyrian capital in Mesopotamia.

For my other alias, resh'da or resh_da, I get no results.

Kilvert's Pagan
05-04-2006, 08:48 PM
Not a thing, as expected. I only post under this name here and in a little-used board about subarus.

My old SDMB handle has too many hits to count, because it's my first initial and my (not unusual) last name

Man With a Cat
05-04-2006, 09:26 PM
1480 hits. I got to page 19 before I got bored.

I'm so irrelevant.... :p

supervenusfreak
05-04-2006, 09:42 PM
269 hits. Mostly Me. Mostly LiveJournal and various other sites that I have set up profiles and such. There were some amazon.com purchases, this odd item (http://www.eagpartners.com/bio_ogi.php), Atomicat's WWII filmography (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Station/3018/wwii/film.htm) (I have no idea why...), this book selection (http://bookweb.kinokuniya.co.jp/guest/cgi-bin/booksea.cgi?ISBN=0606205926) (not mine), A Japanese Classic Car Club Registration (http://www.japanclassiccarclub.lu/jcd2004/e/anmeldung.html), more LJ and local boards stuff...

Mama Zappa
05-04-2006, 09:50 PM
6,000ish hits. One on the first page (but not the first hit itself) is a link to my profile at the Quicken forums  (though that has zero identifying info).

Apparently my kinsman, Frank, wrote a song called "My guitar wants to kill your mama" so there are boatloads of hits for that.

TimeWinder
05-04-2006, 10:13 PM
Weird. TimeWinder brings up 20+ pages of results. I didn't see any of them that are me in the first three or four. For a word that doesn't mean anything, I don't know where the jillions of results came from (apparently there's a magazine by that name, though).

Not surprising that they're not me, though -- I don't use this name anywhere else.

cmkeller
05-04-2006, 10:46 PM
cmkeller - 10 pages, about 75% of which deal with me. Many of the hits reference my helping on the SDSAB Staff Report about who wrote the Bible.

melondeca
05-05-2006, 07:35 AM
That was so cool. The first hit was an article in The St. Petersburg Times mentioning my wedding dress. It was from a post on the indiebride.com message board. I only posted there ten or eleven times so I was kind of surprised.

The rest of the hits are SDMB related or hits about little black dresses that have nothing to do with me and nowhere in them is my user name mentioned.

MissMossie
05-05-2006, 08:00 AM
There were 124 results for missmossie and all but 17 of them were omitted by google. Out of those 17, 13 of them were related to me, two of them were for some other queer missmossie (I guess it's a gay sort of name...), and two were for a posting on Dr. Phil's message board.

Seren
05-05-2006, 08:25 AM
2,270,000 and none are me.

*sigh*

elmwood
05-05-2006, 08:32 AM
I use the name "elmwood" on the SDMB and another board that isn't spidered. It's a very common street name in the US, so there will probably be hundreds and thousands of hits before there's a reference to me.

Typo Knig
05-05-2006, 12:05 PM
None of the "Typo Knig" links are me, but this is the only place I use that handle. I don't participate in other message boards, really. Once you've done the best, why bother with anything else?

I got a couple of hits on my email address, which is what I use for newsgroups. Guess I'm hiding in plain sight.

Tastes of Chocolate
05-05-2006, 03:06 PM
Right.

Tastes of Chocolate.

Lemur866
05-05-2006, 03:44 PM
Interesting game.

One really odd thing was seeing one of my posts here on the SDMB used as a cite on another message board! Whoa.

http://www.iidb.org/vbb/printthread.php?t=85502&page=4&pp=25

Another weird one is a link to a cyrrilic font site, presumeably russian.

Others are posts I've made on other message boards with this username. No surprise there.

BJMoose
05-05-2006, 04:49 PM
None of the displayed references was to me. Strange - I thought Google was indexing this board. (This is the only place I use this name; the other BJMooses out there are imposters.)

Auntbeast
05-07-2006, 01:21 AM
Auntbeast, I'm 2nd link on 2nd google page, I'm not the christian, or the canadian, or the crafty one. I am the one with big buffs, a thing for fish tanks, gardening, and Anarchy Online, coupon clipping.

Saintmaya, yeah, it's pretty much all me. It goes back a frighteningly long time. I still feel the same about the horrid book "natural history of the senses."

Egads, I seem like a schizo looking at those links. What a wide variety of things I post about.

Marley23
05-07-2006, 01:32 AM
Even when restricted the search to English results, I got a lot of foreign-language hits. Only one SDMB hit out of 271 total, and it came from the "Ever diagnose a character with a mental illness?" thread last August.

I can't find it now, but a couple of weeks ago I did find that a blogger had quoted this entire post (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=6656509&postcount=13). I didn't mind, but I wondered if it was a Doper.

Regallag_The_Axe
05-07-2006, 02:04 AM
The first and only result for "Regallag_the_Axe" wasthis (http://www.sirblah.com/misc/group10.htm).

For plain ol' Regallag I was also number one (a 'Draw a pig personality test' from a thread here a while ago). In fact the only result that wasn't explictly me seemed to be a random collection of letters that just happened to spell out Regallag.

I can't say I'm suprised that I'm the only Regallag around.

mamboman
05-07-2006, 05:15 AM
484 hits and 8 of them are mine - on topics as diverse as my contributions to a couple of fan-made Beach Boys tribute CDs (I recorded versions of "Good Vibrations" and "Still Cruising") to my rants against David Moyes on ToffeeWeb.

Nice to see there is a vast army of mambomen all over the world, tho.

mm

Ins&Outs&What-have-yous
05-07-2006, 06:49 AM
ArchitectChore: only 2 hits. Both of them apply to me and the SDMB
