Evidently a Florida congressman got a little crazy when he sent emails to a 16-year old page. I don't know about you, but I could sure use some details.

Thanks for the link (I didn't have to register! WooHOO!). While it sounds like he was maybe grooming him for a future "heavier hit", it doesn't sound like he's a monster or anything. I was expecting more blood and guts.

I read the emails and they really aren't that bad. I was more appalled at the atrocious spelling than anything. The emails clearly do not tell the whole story. He resigned for a reason...I'm guessing he has kiddie porn on his computer or is secretly having a sexual affair with another man or something of that nature that he is afraid of being exposed because of these emails.

ABC News reported Friday that Foley also engaged in a series of sexually explicit instant messages with current and former teenage male pages. In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page: "Do I make you a little horny?"
Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect.I know it's sick, but that made me laugh.

Well, so much for giving him the benefit of the doubt.Well, it sounded like something a comedian would think of. I don't know if it's true he said it, but you have to admit it is funny.

Hey, the guy resigned and made a sincere apology (without saying exactly what he was apologizing for,) hours after the story broke. I was for giving him the benefit of the doubt before that, but those aren't the actions of someone who was just being friendly.

Well, apparently I was reading the wrong emails. Ew.
He also stated he would resign because there were other potentially damaging emails and IM's out there.

Okay, I merged the two threads about this subject (the ones with responses; the others, I just closed and sent readers this way) and edited the title to include Foley's name.

This guy, I actually pity him. It's so transparent, and he's in a position of such obvious power. These guys, they never learn do they?

Maybe using the bolded quote was in poor taste, but couldn't a case be made that Foley was trying to use a catchphrase made famous by the Austin Powers movies starring Mike Myers?

What do congressmen use for bookmarks? Bent over pages! Thank you, I'll be here all week. Be sure to tip your waitress.
Out of curiosity, anybody know what Foley's stand on things like gay marriage was before this?

Yeah, I wonder about that. One article said that the kid was very emphatic about calling the request "sick", which makes me wonder what kind of photo Foley wanted him to send. Not his yearbook photo, I would imagine, so I wonder what were the specifics of the request.

Sometimes, when people have a problem, they have to hit rock bottom before finally getting help. In this case, it would presumably be a rock-hard, sixteen-year-old bottom, but hey.

There are several pages involved in this, apparently. In a link to IM transcripts in another thread, he was asking a kid about how he masturbated and how often, and said something about wanting to see his "cute butt" going up and down. I'm fairly sure that wasn't in any of the Austin Powers movies.
Out of curiosity, anybody know what Foley's stand on things like gay marriage was before this?
Not that it's at all relevant, but he voted against the SSM constitutional amendment in 2004 (didn't see a cite on this year's vote) and against bannign gay people from adopting in DC.
cite (http://www.ontheissues.org/FL/Mark_Foley.htm)
Whether that reflected any sincere belief on Foley's part or a desire to avoid being outed (there was a whispering campaign not too long ago) I don't know.
