You can choose to view them or not in your "User CP".
That's where you can set yours up.
You have the click the box below each post to get it.
If you preview, you have to click the box again.

You'll need to go to your User CP (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/usercp.php?) and enter your sig. In order to display it, you need to select the "Show Your Signature" checkbox under where you type your post. Signatures should be small--under 4 lines of normal sized text--and should be used a maximum of once per thread page; preferably only once per thread.

Well, August is a long time away and I have to be witty before then. I have got to have some leeway , you know.

Actually, I wouldn't have said anything if the OP hadn't made and mentioned that very same mistake.

Actually, I wouldn't have said anything if the OP hadn't made and mentioned that very same mistake. Criously, you noticed the intentional typo I made, echoing Abby_Emma_Sasha, but didn't spot "Insteaad". That was accidental, so Guadere's Law is still being enforced.

The key is to produce a funny, stylish, enigmatic or symbolic sig line.

Certainly. But in order for it to be truly effective, you must change it every 5-7 days and use a wide variety of fonts, sizes, and colors.

Does that really work? I have never seen a specific case of that style and methodology produce a humorous or memorable result. Are there any examples of a poster doing this successfully?

I was going to offer a stinging retort, referring to the probable intrest of certain persons (who shall not be named) in the fold-out centerfolds of Swine Breeders Monthly.
Then, I recalled that I am one of Natures Noblemen, & above that kind of thing.

Wow. Sorry about that Gaudere. I spelled it two ways and didn't even notice after I was quizzed here on it a couple of times.
I always have blind spots with my "au" and "ou" digraphs. I'll write guage and guoge, etc.

I posting this asking for help but I know I'll never get back to this page and find any answers? Is there a way to search the web site for your own posts so that you can see the response! Once it's posted, it's gone forever. I simply don't understand how this web site works. Guess I am dumb but I suspect I'm not the only dumb one on here.

Only active members can use the search function, Ruth: a quick read of the FAQ's should answer most of your questions.

Madam, I protest. We court criticism, but this is mere abuse.

Since there is no search until membership, what you have to do is recall what forum you were reading and the thread names.
There's a certain amount of flags and symbols and change of colors that are supposed to tell you what threads you've seen and which ones are new, but I've never figured them out.
Just go back to each forum and scan until you spot a familiar thread title.
Be sure your profile has the options set for viewing the right number of days back.
I think the default for this forum, for example is just two days, but I have my options set to show me 30 days because I don't always check here.

I posting this asking for help but I know I'll never get back to this page and find any answers? It just occured to me why you posted on this thread instead of creating a new one:
This board, unlike some others, does not have a Post New Thread button on every thread.
To find that button, you have to exit the thread you are reading and find the forum list. Then you can visually search for your name in the author column of the forum list.

Well, sheesh. I have done the user CP thing. I have enabled my signature thing. I have no idea what else to do. It is simply not showing up.
Yes, I know in the grand scheme of things this is only mildly important, but geez, why am I having so much trouble?

The one step you forgot, which you must do every time you want to show your signature, is to check the "Show Signature" box under where you type your post. If you preview first, you'll need to check it again when you actually submit.

Q.E.D. I swear I have done that too, but hey I have given up now. I have a good rythymn going in some cafe society threads and I'm not going to poke the bear.
P.S. I am sure I misspelled rythymn, but I don't have the inclination to spell check right now.

Abby_Emma_Sasha -
If that last set of instructions doesn't do it for you (it certainly should),
then by all means just do it the way the pioneers did.
Copy and paste by hand.
I often do this when I have a funny quote that's perfect for just one thread.
