NZ Herald article (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10416900) -- more details than the Aussie article linked. The incident has mystified Otago University marine mammal biologist Liz Slooten, who said it was extremely unusual.

"The number of dolphins that injure, let alone kill, a human would be one in 100 years."

Dr Slooten, who has studied dolphins for more than 20 years, put the odds of such an accident at "three million to one" and "way more rare than being struck by lightning".

Dolphins seldom became aggressive in the company of humans, but could get agitated or confused when a large number of boats were around.I know we have a reputation for adventure tourism, but this is ridiculous ...!

I know we have a reputation for adventure tourism, but this is ridiculous ...!I don't know. It could be a new "niche" market. Now all you have to do is start training the whales at Kaikoura to keep up with their northern cousins.

A stingray made him do it.Stingray: Oi! You! Bottle-nosed fella. Yeah, you. Reckon you can leap over that daft floaty thing in one go for a tenner and a brewski? Eh?

Yeah, those stingrays will dare anyone to do anything ...

Did that dolphin have more right to be there than the human?

Don't say I didn't try to warn you people!
The article claims it was an accident, but I know what that dolphin was doing.

I can top that. Several years ago, when my wife and I were in Maui, the whale watching tour we went on had just had a baby humpback whale breach and break the leg of a woman passenger.

Now, nobody ever wants to break a leg- but if you MUST get a broken leg, that's the way to do it. I mean, how can you top a conversation about a whale breaking your leg?

Oh, good. I'm not the only thing that had both of those flash through my mind when I read the OP.

I think the phrase "creature miscalculation" has potential. The possibilities are so much more varied and dramatic than "wardrobe malfunction."

First it was the stingrays, now this. This is the dolphinvasion. They're coming for us, and they already control 70 percent of the planet. May God have mercy on us all.

This is what that traitorous dolphin-safe tuna has brought us. The damn environmentalists have screwed us again.
