View Full Version : Creationist almost discovers gravity

We've already seen (titled 'Creationist almost discovers the sun' in some sources)
"One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. That just isn't possible: UNLESS there is a giant outside source of energy supplying the Earth with huge amounts of energy. If there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it."
On another board I sometimes post at (not sure if I can link because of board war potential), someone just said:
I know that the "big bang theory" is false because there exists no known force nor mechanism able to facilitate the condensation of matter into dense objects.
Just thought you guys would like that.
Why do you hate God? :)
Because he allows people stupid enough to post the shite quoted in the OP to live.

Wow.
Mangetout, you owe me a keyboard. Or whoever wrote that, I suppose.

Matter is frozen energy.
Gravity is just a theory. I want equal time for Intelligent Falling.
Because he allows people stupid enough to post the shite quoted in the OP to live.
Ah, but surely this proves that God does not exist, since he hates stupid people. :)

No, really, 'fess up. These are quotes from Onion articles, right?

That just isn't possible: UNLESS there is a giant outside source of energy supplying the Earth with huge amounts of energy. If there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it.I take it that person has never heard of solar energy either. Or photosynthesis.
Well, he or she is right in a way. If such a source existed (and it does), scientists would know about it (and they ddo).

One of my coworkers just popped up over my cube wall to see why I was snickering. Now he's laughing, too. :)

(I know this is joke, but)
::Slaps tdn with a herring::
Stop that, stop that! Gravity is a scientific law! It has been observed observed over and over that matter is attracted to matter. Einstein's curved space-time is a theory, gravity is a law.
Now unless anyone else wants to get herring-slapped I suggest you acknowledge the difference between scientific theories and scientific laws.

Pshaw. A "scientific law" is just a theory that's been dressed up real purty. ;)
P.S. Love the OP. Magnificent.

I never studied law.

No, really, 'fess up. These are quotes from Onion articles, right? The first one isn't. It's from some sort of games forum ( not sure if I should mention the name; board wars like the OP said ). The full post is :
Believe it or not, you were perfect when you were born. You were obviously healthy if you are posting here today, you hadn't sinned, and were making choices and using your free will, though they were small choices. Unfortunately, later in your life you made some bad choices and now you are a sinner, but remember, God MADE you perfect.

That's me, not God. Don't feel bad - a lot of people make that mistake. At least, I assume that's why so many people mutter, "Jesus," under their breath when they're talking to me. :smack:

As do I. tdn gets a nine and a half for "Intelligent Falling".
Mind if I steal that? I make absolutely no promise to credit you for it.

I KNOW that gravity is a law! I had it on a tee shirt! :D Gravity: Not just a good idea, it's THE LAW!

Laws are math, whereas theories are just lots and lots of words.

Ok, here's the challenge: let's come up with a "coherent" set of arguments for "intelligent falling" (tdn, genius). I'll do up a website and everything. Then Mangetout can shill it on creationist boards. Together we can discredit them even more than they are already And if the movement gains in strength, cause an even bigger headache for educational establishments in the US: "The theory of gravity is just a theory", etc.

Sorry to rain (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/39512?issue=4228&special=2005) on tdn's parade...
(OTOH, if you really did come up with 'Intelligent Falling' independently, then props to you!)

There's also the old thread Gravitists vs. Downists (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=41058). Unfortunately this threadspotted thread is no longer visible. With a bit of luck it might live again after the server upgrade.

Can you prove that things fall because of gravity, not because God is pushing them down? Thought not. :D

Can you prove that gods don't believe in gravity? I don't think so, since they are always dropping things.

Back in my wild youth, I had a T-shirt made that said "There is NO Gravity - the Earth Sucks!"
I still have it around somewhere.... but unfortunately the expansion of the universe has made me too large to wear it... I blame God..

Hey, get your Wiki-editor hat on!
From Wiki's entry on Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory):
"For example, it is a fact that an apple dropped on earth has been observed to fall towards the center of the planet, and the theory which explains why the apple behaves so is the current theory of gravitation."
