OK. I don't have words.

This video is either sick, vile homophobia or brilliant satire.

***WARNING - NSFW *** (http://break.com/index/homophobic_christian_rock.html)

Is he struggling against his gay urges or condemning the trail of sacheting queers lecherously ogling his beefy bear goodness?

Well, he thanked Andrew Sullivan for getting behind him.

I think it's pretty clear what he meant by that.

I don't hate fags but I like it. I think he is trying to beat off his inner fag through musical cleansing. It starts off slow and a little sickly sweet in the beginning but it eventually gets down to business: "God hates fagggs, If you are a fag, he hates you tooooo!" That singing seems to counterproductive in a way though. It seems to encourage a lot more fags to crowd around him, hold hands, and whatever else they do for support. I doubt its much different to really be a fag most of the time.

Hoax. No question. I was chuckling at the "no back door [to Heaven]" lyric, and how "get on your knees" is rhymed with "sodomy". He's ridiculing Christian Rock and fundamentalists generally.

That was fair-to-middlin' satire. Decent production values, though, so I give it a 6/10 for effort and blatantly stating that there's no back door to Heaven.

Better yet, read the replies and comments below the video. I'm not sure if they'll disappear or rotate so I'll quote my favorite:

It is, unfortunately, neither a satire nor a parody nor a hoax.

His webpage.

His ministry.

He says he is a "reformed homosexual"; that Oscar Wilde, according to him also a "reformed homosexual", is his hero; and that by releasing a single entitled "God Hates Fags", he is actually preaching God's word.

As a Christian, I have no response to this other than an enormous "Ummm..." and an acute and sudden need to belong to some other church--Wiccan sounds good right about now.

And I might add that, in keeping with his trollish personality, he is positively reveling in all the attention his video is getting. From his ministry page:

Message From Donnie

It's been quite a day here at LGWM. We're still trying to get a handle on how this will affect our ministry. Donnie has filmed together a short update on all the attention, his perspective on people's opinions and some of the plans for the future. See it here.

WOW

The Response has been overwhelming!
We certainly were not expecting this much attention. But don't get us wrong, we will use it responsibly. I've been trying to respond to each and every email, so be patient. We'll be putting up another video this evening addressing some of the issues we're facing.

All press interest please refer to: Publicity

We've done some of the phone interviews and will try and get to all of them. Thank you so much for your interest in our Ministry.
Peace be with you
Donnie D.

Uh huh. Hey, Fox, Reuters, bloggers: DNFTT, people.

No, this is definitely satire. As Lemur866 pointed out, he thanks Andrew Sullivan for "getting behind" him (wink, wink) in his video here (http://lovegodsway.org/Blog/AmazingDay). Andrew Sullivan is a very open non-reformed homosexual. Moreover, Sullivan makes it clear that he thinks the song is satire (http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2007/01/spoiler.html). Donnie Davies would not be praising Sullivan if Davies didn't want his work to be perceived as satire.

he thanks Andrew Sullivan for "getting behind" him
Just because Andrew Sullivan wants to think it's satire doesn't make it so.

You're hearing a wink-wink, and I'm hearing a take on "Get thee behind me, Satan", from Matthew 16:23:
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."As you said yourself, Andrew Sullivan is a very open non-reformed homosexual; he symbolizes open homosexuality. So, in other words, he's saying, "I've put Andrew Sullivan, i.e. homosexuality, behind me, because it is evil, like Satan, and I am glad that he, i.e. homosexuality, responded to my Christlike rebuke." So he isn't praising Andrew Sullivan as such, he's just congratulating himself obliquely on having been able to put his homosexuality "behind" him.

As someone already said, you can't make this shit up. And both websites IMO reek of gen-u-wine semi-literate clueless religious fanaticism. I've seen spoof religious websites before, like Landover Baptist, and they are much more polished and focused. And the satire is always quite pointed, and abundantly clear.

But the inane, disconnected ramblings here sound to me like the Real Thing. Somebody got himself a couple of domain names and a minicam, and decided to set up shop and preach the Gospel According To Him. It's what the Internet does best--enables all the Little People to make their tinfoilhatted voices heard--but sometimes the results are less than salubrious.

So he isn't praising Andrew Sullivan as such, he's just congratulating himself obliquely on having been able to put his homosexuality "behind" him.

Have you watched the video in question? This is my transcription of the portion where he mentions Sullivan:

[After giving a shout-out to "Tiana on YouTube" and "Madeleine on MySpace"] I also got to give a special thanks to Andrew Sullivan, the world famous blogger from Time Magazine---obviously a great Christian man helping us forge our message. Andrew took time to condemn YouTube for taking down our video and taking away our freedom of speech. Thank you so much, Andrew Sullivan, for getting behind me.

Ostensibly, he is praising Sullivan. The look on his face is completely sincere. Yet, no matter whether you are I am right, he is acting. If I am right, he is pretending to be an anti-homosexual bigot who is so ignorant that he doesn't realize that he is praising someone who would (were Davies being sincere) despise him. If you are right, Davies is still acting, because he is pretending to praise Sullivan as a "great Christian man" when in fact Davies thinks Sullivan is a fag whom God hates.

So, either way, he is doing some kind of sarcastic mockery. Even under your hypothesis, there is a subtle satirical element to what he is saying. The problem with your hypothesis, though, is that you would have him be a "gen-u-wine semi-literate clueless religious fanatic." That just doesn't seems consistent with the sort of ironic attitude required to speak the ostensibly sincere praise above while in fact believing that the object of his praise is evil.

Sorry DDG. I just read your post more closely, and I see that you think Davies is sincerely praising Andrew for putting homosexuality behind him. I don't see how that could be, though, because Sullivan makes it clear that the music video is either sublime satire or horrifying bigotry when he links to it. There is just no way Davies could have thought that Sullivan was renouncing homosexuality. Besides, Davies doesn't even mention Sullivan's homosexuality in his remarks.

The second video of his, doesn't it draw obvious parallels between a thyroid condition (that he was 'born that way' with) making him overweight and what many assume to be true of homosexuality? It certainly seemed that way to me, if for no other reason than he mentioned it more than once. And I agree that he seems about thisclose to busting a gut, probably with disbelief that anyone would buy all of this for real.

My vote is for of course it's satire.

Oh, and besides what is (I suppose) apparent to these folks, why does Boy George get an asterisk next to his name and no one else? I'm sure at least Freddie Mercury would have liked one to. D'oh.
