View Full Version : I'm getting my husband fixed today.

Gee, and he didn't even know he was broken... :D
Yep, the SO is getting snipped today. I'll be getting a call from the hospital in a few hours to go and pick him up. He'll be shootin' blanks from this point on.
Don't jump all over me about making him do it - it was actually his idea! But what I'd like to know from any of the guys out there who have beeen through this - how much pain is he going to be in for the next little while, and aside from the mandatory "waiting on him hand and foot," what can I do for him to help?
As an aside... wouldn't it make more sense to call this getting broken? It worked before, and now it won't...

OK, hands up guys. How many of you clenched together their legs in sheer horror at the word "snipped"?

Okay, compare the feeling of getting snipped with the feeling of hearing these 3 words:
"Honey, I'm late"
Now, it doesn't seem so bad, does it?
Good luck, KimKatt and Mr. KimKatt, I'll be reading this thread with interest since MisterTot will be getting fixed as soon as we aquire a ReallyTinyTot.

<Stares blankly...then eyes widen...horrified look> They "do" that?!
Just kidding, but I wouldn't call it getting broken. It still works, just no baby batter.

I got mine done about five years ago. Mine wasn't performed as in-office surgery, but as standard outpatient surgery, so Peta T. had to drive me to and from.
As far as recovery, I came home and crashed big-time, but I am particularly susceptible to anesthesia. I only experienced pain and swelling for about 3-4 days, and kept ice on my genitals as much as was comfortable. The waiting on hand and foot is about the best thing you can do, IMHO, and make sure food, drink, and Tylenol-4 are close at hand! :D

Since I HAD to have my stuff removed, hubby didn't have to go thru this, but I can relate the tales of two friends.
One did exactly as the Dr said - took it easy and used the ice - he was up and about as normal in a couple of days. The other decided he was macho and didn't need to heed the doc. Went out to play baseball or some other stoopid thing. Wound up in bed for a week. As an aside, the first guy is still married, but the second one...
Anyway, I'm a firm believer in listening to the doc and following the instructions to the letter. Pamper him a little, but not TOO much. It's just a little snip after all.

A friend told me that he used bags of frozen vegetables. He also said the swelling was unbelievable.

Thanks, pldennison, I appreciate the tips.
I will be picking him up from the hospital, but I had some things that I have to get done at work today, so he will be taking a cab there.
You know, I just can't help kidding him about the swelling... I always thought swelling in that area was a GOOD thing :D
FairyChatMom, your second friend is a nut. If a doctor tells me to take it easy, I'm taking it as easy as possible. Simple as that. It's crazy not to. Hubby will be somewhat pampered for the next few days. Fortunately, he has a tomorrow off, of course, and Monday is Thanksgiving for us in Canada, so it's a long weekend to boot. Lots of ice time. Now, if I can just keep him from jumping up and down during the Lions-Packers game on Sunday...

I had a vasectomy in March. I believe the Dr.'s name was de Sade, but I'm not sure.
Everyone assured me that it was a modest little procedure. Well, mine hurt like hell. As a result the Dr. gave me too much pain killer, to which I had a systemic reaction (i.e., tremor, fever of 103, vomiting, diarrhea for 3 days (the vasectomy diet, or "How I lost 10 pounds after being sterilized"), fainted in the bathroom, general fall apart). I was swollen (yes, a bag of frozen peas works wonders)for about a week, felt like I had been kicked for about 2 weeks.
REMEMBER TO USE OTHER BIRTH CONTROL UNTIL YOU ARE CLEARED BY THE DR.! I had to go back 3 months later and receive the all clear (those swimmers can hide in all sorts of places).

Been there, done that, got the jock strap. There was some pain and discomfort for a few days, but the thing I remember most was de colores! From red to dark blue to purple - how pretty (look, but don't touch!). When we crossed over to black I got a little concerned. I didn't see the word "necrotic" in any of the literature. Fortunately, nothing fell off and complete healing took about a week or so.
Advice:
-Definately use ice the first couple of days.
-Since the boys won't be in a swinging mood for a while, much preferring to be cuddled safe and close, invest in a jock strap.
-Don't throw out the galoshes 'till the doctor says the rain has stopped.
Be warned: even though most fixed husbands won't spray, some still will.
Oh, wait. That's fixed cats, not husbands.
Husbands will still spray. :D:D
I got mine about 7 or 8 years ago. I had wanted a vasectomy for some time before that for the sake of convenience during sex, and I was only waiting for my ex to decide once and for all whether or not children were in the picture for us. Once I got the okay from her, we made the operation our fifth anniversary present to each other.
It was a piece of cake. In fact, I don’t even particularly remember the surgery or the recuperation stage--I don’t recall that there was any great amount of pain or swelling. I do recall that there were a couple routine post-surgery visits to the urologist to provide samples so he could confirm that the operation had taken properly. But test results were negative and everything went according to plan.
And I’m delighted with the results. Performance wasn’t negatively affected one bit, spontaneity increased, and it was so nice not to have to deal with the condoms, sponges, pills, diaphragms, and all the rest of it.
I would happily have the operation all over again if there were any reason to do so.

JTR, you're my hero. All these other guys are scaring me
We have the jock strap, he modelled it for me yesterday  And lots of ice and ziplock bags. Perhaps I should borrow the digital camera for those great photo ops, Rysdad. The blackmail opportunities would be endless.... heh, heh, heh.

I guess I was unimpressed with the vasectomy because I've had a number of other surgical procedures--both minor and major--done on me across the years. Compared to most other surgical procedures, the vasectomy seemed like no big deal at all.
Anyway, good luck to you and the hubby! It really does make life a little simpler and more fun!

Piece of cake. Mine went smoothly, and I was back to work after just one day of down time (day of procedure plus next day affirming purpose of job is to avoid day-time TV). I used the jock strap and the frozen veggie bags (peas or corn seemed best) and didn't have any problems. I did hear some horror stories from friends and coworkers, but they were mostly anecdotal, and the only first person one was from a guy who went for a 5 mile hike the morning after the procedure. That's self inflicted if you ask me. Follow the doc's instructions and problems are not likely.

What's the matter with you people?
The idea of a sharp anything that close to my "glad bags"...well lets put it this way, they're already trying to get out of the way.
Oh the horror, the horror..

My hubby had this done last month. It was pretty interesting! :D
Do go for the frozen peas. It seemed to 'cuddle' him in the right spots vs. chunky ice.
For him, one side (right)took the doc 5 minutes, the other (left) took 45. So he was very sore on that side, much longer than the first side was sore. Lots of black and blue, large grapefruits for the first two days.
The jock strap helped him a lot, you might want a few of them around as the bandages stay on for a few days and leak a bit at first.
Keep plenty of munchies, his pain meds and liquids, and of course the remote control near him, and he will feel all better in just a few days. The hardest part for me was not to giggle at him (too much) until he was up and about again. :D

I had it done over 20 years ago. It was no big deal at all (I know, that's what she said). I took a couple of hours off from work on Friday afternoon, stopped by the doctors office on the way home. Sat on the end of the examination table and watched him do it, about 20 minutes maybe. Drove home.
It got tender and a little swelling after a while and I spent Saturday just hanging around watching TV and trying to keep the kids jumping in my lap. I didn't use any ice and just wore sweats. I was pretty well back to normal by Sunday, slight swelling and some funny colors but by Monday I wasn't really having any trouble at all.
Good luck and I hope hubby has an easy time of it.

True, but this should keep him from trying to hump the neighbors' legs when they come to visit.:D
(I'm assuming, KimKatt, that it's okay if he just humps your leg.)

Had it done 27 years ago on a Friday. Spent Saturday in bed with ice. Spent Sunday on the couch watching TV. Went to work Monday. Went snowmobile riding the next Saturday.

I pampered my man for a few days afterward. I thought I owed it to him since he pampered me after passing our children through my birth canal.
He took it really easy. He was sore, but recovered over the weekend. He says that he still gets the odd twinge there too. I thought the bruising looked awful! I was so relieved when that went away.

Got mine done maybe 8-10 years ago in an out-paitient clinic. The hardest part was getting the counseling from the butch female doctor who was on duty the day I went in to ask about it, instead of my own male doctor. Haven't regretted it since, although the whisps of smoke from the cauterization were a bit un-nerving.
You may already know that in some cases this can be reversed IN SOME CASES, but it's expensive, time-consuming, and not always possible. Be sure you want to do this first.
I was black and blue for a couple of days, fading through purple, green, red, etc. The procedure was a snap (should I say snip?). It took 20-30 minutes, and the urologist used my equipment to train an intern how to do this. Without asking me, I might add. At least he could have found someone cuter than this guy. Like a woman, maybe? Is that so much to ask?
OK, back on topic. Treat hubby with TLC, follow the doctor's orders, and be sure that he knows the standard vasectomy joke that ALL guys use. See, when they do this procedure, they tape Mr. Willy down to keep him out of the way. At the end of the procedure, they have to remove that tape. It took months for my chest hair to grow back...

My husband was fixed about six years ago. He had swelling and pain for a couple of days and twinges for a couple of weeks afterward. I wish we'd known about the frozen veggies, since I had a hell of a time getting the ice small enough that it didn't jostle his goods.
He said it hurt like HELL for just a second during the operation, and I started to feel sorry for him until I remembered the seven hours (total) of hard labor I went through - not to mention the 18 months of pregnancy and four YEARS of breastfeeding. All in all, I think the guys are getting off fairly easy, don't you?

Yeah. After surgery, they give them to your wife to carry around in her purse so you have to ask her for them everytime you want to play with them.

Hey, all, thanks for your support (pun intended) :)
He's home, and snipped. No last minute chicken out. At the moment, he says, there is no discomfort at all. He's had ice under the boys since arriving at home.
Mr. Cynical - well, it wasn't my leg I had in mind... :D
jesuslynch - ROTFL!!
aenea - giggling. Yep. Giggling even as I type. I just can't help it.
stuffnb - Mr. Katt says not to make him laugh that hard :D
RalfCoder - I'm telling the guys that at work tomorrow, absolutely :D
Hubby says to tell you all thanks for the good advice and the horror stories ;) And he was out cold, so he didn't have to see the smoke, thankfully!

The wife has it backwards, I guess. From my point of view,
the left side, (my left) took 5 mins. The right side took
45 mins. He had to make an incision like this |_|, and
fold the flap back. At one point he mentioned taking me
to the hospital if he didn't find the tube within the next five minutes. That was after he squeezed my right 'buddy' for about 30 minutes. I told him lets take a break so I could catch my breath, and let my lower back touch the table for a minute or two. After I caught my breath, and
he rested his hands, it only took about another 10 minutes.
I had to keep apologizing to his nurse for that 30 mins.
I was going oww!, GD!!, S**T!!, SOB!!, sorry ma'am.
Those valuims are GOOD STUFF!! But it caused me to not watch
my language. She took me home, fed me on the way, and then
she went to work. I put a ice pack on 'em, and watched tv
and slept with Mr. Percoset.(sp) She came home, we ordered
food and I went to bed. That night, she was hurting, (see thread on Crohns) so I had to 'hobble' to the 2nd bedroom.
The next day I did my own lunch. She cooked dinner. The
next day I cooked dinner. I'm a horny bastard, and I read
somewhere in the handouts that it takes app 20 'shots' to
clear your system. I probably passed that two weeks ago!!
So I'm gonna call the Dr and see if I can go ahead and get
tested. If I had known what was going to happen, i.e.
1 hr on the table, I would still have it done tomorrow.

The hubby is still alive and well, and intact. However, silly boy that he is, after having absolutely no discomfort on Thursday or Friday, on Saturday afternoon he changed a tire. Bad move. He limped around for a couple of days after that. Note to any men contemplating this - check the tire pressure beforehand. Changing flats afterwards is bad.
There's some really dark purple bruises, and one little teensy incision mark. That's it. He's still fully functional - we checked :D.
The first follow up appointment with the doc is Monday, but it's obvious that all is well.

I just have to say I like the number of guys who have posted here who say this was a good thing. We should form a club or something. Any ideas for a name? We could even have a theme song...
I know of guys who would rather their wife went in for some major surger rather than have someone come close to their boys with a knife and in my case a laser. They're self centered idiots.
Lola has spent 36 months of her life pregnant, spent days in labour, and needed complete bed rest with the last two babies. My down time was a few days.
The procedure was completely painless and I took a few days off from work. Things were pretty tender for a bit but it was a small price to pay, the colours were pretty psychedelic too.
We guys don't often gather together over beer to share vasectomy stories...
For the record: Lola spoils me a lot.

Proposed theme songs for the boys' V-Club:
Bryan Adams - Cuts Like a Knife
John Cougar - Hurts So Good
AC/DC - Big Balls
My hubby has suggested that he has gained a new pick-up line out of the deal too. "Hey, baby, wanna see my vasectomy scar?"
