I'm working on the list (Bwah ha ha ha!) -- I'm thinking I'll put the top 20 answers into play, and leave the rest of it in the "don't be an asshole, twicks" annex. As you've seen, I have a hard time preventing myself from adding just one... more ... item .... to my lists. :D

At least this time I know if I come up with something completely off the wall, it's more likely to be a "popular" answer than something logical I come up with. ;)

Psst, teamate, PM me before you post the next question ;)

Good morning, all.

Nope, not the toss-up -- just some housekeeping/logistics before we start. (And, phooey, I have to do a couple of work things before we do.)

I never did exactly figure out the original Idle Thoughts scoring system, so I say we count his two rounds as practice, and start with the revised scoring in the third round, the one we just played. The scoring system we have agreed to is: 1 point for each correct answer; if the the team playing gets three strikes and the other team successfully steals, that other team gets all the points accrued by the first team plus 1 point for their correct answer that steals.

In round 1, Blue got 13 right before striking out, and then Red successfully stole with a 14th right answer.

Current score: Red 14, Blue 0

As I said a few posts up, I came up with a few, well, twicky answers to the next one. I'm happy to not include them in the main list -- but it doesn't seem right to have it count as a strike if someone does come up with them. Thus, I'd like to propose the following:

The main list will include 18-20 answers (I want to take another look at it), and then my bizarro answers will be on a "bonus list." If you guess something that's on the bonus list, you get 2 points -- but if no one guesses them, the failure to do so won't affect the main play of the round. Does that seem like fun, or should I just totally scrap the bizarro list?

Dolores Reborn

Sounds good to me! This is the Dope, you know. Bizarro is our middle name!

So noted, and so noted. Going on vacation, Struan?

I'm off to the but'n'ben* in Perthshire for a week of tramping around the hills and general avoidance of the trappings of modern life. That said, I'll be taking my laptop (I'm in the middle of a particularly tense game of Europa Universalis), and will try and get on-line via my mobile phone, but past experience suggests that this will be a slow and frustrating experience.

* the but'n'ben is a glorified shack but it is in one of the beautiful places on the planet and I love it to bits.

I'm wondering about the rules during the "take the points" section.

The rounds have so far been started by the blue team but the red team has taken the points by giving one correct answer.

The current round has 30 possible answers and the blue team got 9. So the red team has to get only one of the remaining 21 to get all the points.

I think the red team should be required to give an answer in one of the top 5 of the remaining blanks in order to get all the points. In this case, an answer in the 6, 7, 10, 11, 12 position.

I hope I don't sound like a spoil sport by mentioning this. This would apply for both teams when the situation arises.

What do you all think?

It's merely a suggestion. And of course, I wouldn't want the rules to change in the middle of a round. The game is fun as it is now anyway.

Well, we definitely can't change horses in midround.

And, much as I love the Blue Team, I've got to agree with What Exit? -- if Blue sees a long list, knows I wrote the damn list and therefore it's probably a bit challenging :D , wnd chooses to play ... they've got to risk getting their points stolen.

Sorry, folks -- it's the years at the puzzle factory. I'm used to coming up with long, long lists and editing them down according to the specific needs of the puzzle. With this format -- and an hour-plus-each-way commute to ruminate -- I tend to get a trifle carried away.

:: grumbling from the blue team :: ;)

I emailed Sternvogel (as well as Pygmy) this morning, too.

:: claps hands and hoots for Sternvogel! ::

As I just explained in reply to your PM (which somehow got shunted to my spam box -- fortunately, I noticed the subject line and figured the message was truly from a Doper), I was unexpectedly unable to access the board all last week. I was staying at a house which normally has Internet access, but was offline because all devices needed to be removed from the computer room so that carpeting could be laid. Since the computer had been unplugged from the dedicated cable/wireless port, the only way I could have used a laptop would have been to subscribe for at least a month to an ISP that would have been useful to me for a mere week.

Had I realized I'd have been in this situation, I'd have announced my then-impending unavailability in a post to this thread. Still, I apologize for leaving my team in the lurch, and hope I'll be able to participate in future rounds of this game.

So the old rule of long unwinnable lists worked for because Blue went first and the new rule of short doable lists worked for us because we went first.

All right, then!

I'm thinking 50 might do it, depending on how masochistic the Blues are. (I love you guys, but damn, you can't play worth a damn.) (Damn!)

And remixing and starting over might be a good idea. Depending, of course, on Red's willingness to accept a merge...

I'm going to be off the boards for about 10 days, starting a week from today. (Going to Holland for a business trip -- is my job cool or what? -- and though I'll keep an eye on my email, I won't be wasting ... uh, investing ... hours a day here.)

The current plan is to put Blue out of its misery by playing to only 50 points, not 100, and then reshuffle the teams (and perhaps allow a few more people into the game to get the numbers back up) before starting another round.

Option 1: Play to 50, reshuffle the teams, and have someone else -- perhaps someone with a more normal take on the universe -- take over as emcee, at least while I'm gone. Maybe, I dunno -- Idle Thoughts, whose idea this was in the first place?

Option 2: Play till next Thursday, then take 10 days off for sign-up and to allow anticipation to build, and then resume play when I return.

Whaddya think?

I am willing if you wave the normal requirement to take over the Emcee duties until you return after the next round. I might bug you for some hints on how you devised your lists if you take me up on the offer. The advantage is that few posters are online as much as I am. ;)
