View Full Version : Explain this Amazon.com phenomenon to me (items "currently unavailable")

Currently, I'm looking for a personal CD player that can also read MP3 discs, but I've had this happen frequently with non-media items at Amazon.com. I select the filter to list items by highest average rating and the first three or four pages are packed full of four- and five-star reviewed CD players that are all "currently unavailable" or at best have one or two items for sale by third-party sellers.
Are the high reviews faked? Why are there so many of them? Is there a vast conspiracy by electronics companies to put out dozens of excellent, reasonably priced products just long enough for a handful of people to review them, then suddenly pull them from the market and replace them with tens of dozens of mediocre, low-rated products and a few five-star >$100 players? What gives?

Electronics evolve at a rapid pace, and by the time a widget's been out long enough to accumulate reviews, it gets discontinued and replaced with the next model.

I've noticed the same thing. Does anyone know if there is any way to limit the search results to items that are actually available?
