View Full Version : Your favorite names that you couldn't give your kid

Do you have any names that you like but wouldn't use for your child? What are they and why can't you use them?
Mine are:
Jonathan/John - because there are way too many people in my family with that name, and someone needst to put a stop to it.
Danger - for obvious reasons
Chaim (my all time favorite) - People would see the name, expect one thing, then get a kid that didn't fit that expectation at all.

Jean Louise- too dowdy sounding, but Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird was one of my favorite characters when I was a child.
Daisy/Rose- I love flower names, but again, sounded too old fashioned. We named the dog Daisy, though.

Theadosia was my pick for a girl, my son's probably very glad I didn't get that chance, though.

Sean for my son's middle name, but couldn't because:
- we didn't have anyone in the family that a Sean could be named for, and
- it would've made his initials A.S.S.

My favorite name that I know I won't be able to use in the future is Dryden (for a boy).
It's the name for the singer of my favorite bands, and lets just say my guy wasn't too keen (a bit jealous actually) when he found that out. :p
I think it's a pretty name, though.

I wanted to name my son Jackson or Weston (I was going to art school at the time) but my ex hated both names.
Now I'm really glad I didn't, and my son probably is too.
I love flower names too and if I had a girl I would have named her Lily.

If my son had been a daughter, her name would have been Amika. It was a good combination of Japanese and French that can be rendered easily in kanji.
He almost ended up as Alan Ethan, which would have been combination of both his grandfathers' names (Alain and Isamu), but that got vetoed.

My favorite name is Tamar but I got voted down (turns out, to my daughter's great relief). I remember being none too gently reminded that I wasn't giving birth to a Klingon.
She got a much more conventional Hebrew name.
If any Doper reading this is named Tamar, please don't take offense. It's a beautiful name and I'm still a bitter, bitter woman.

Walt, after Walt Whitman. No one ever likes that name but me.
Ulysses, because this is Ithaca, after all. I get why no one will go along with this, not even as a middle name, but I still think it's cool.
Griffin. It's a little pretentious and weird, but I've always liked it. Been alone in that liking every time.

We had every intention of naming our daugher Catherine - but my brother in law married two women by that name and was married to the second, who we couldn't stand. We decided Catherine was off limits.

Giovanni is probably my favorite name in the world. Unfortunately, it's very Italian and I'm very not. Assuming I don't marry an Italian man, I'd really have no excuse to go with a name like that.

Funny you should ask--I was just telling my older daughter this very thing. A boy's name I really liked, and yet just wouldn't have really "fit" a child of mine.
It's Declan--I really do love it, but it just isn't a name I could see myself using.

I always wanted a son named Fletcher, but my wife did not. I also liked the name Tyler, but she did not. I also liked the name Eli, so did my wife.
Unfortunately, we had two girls. I never did have any girl names I really wanted.

Marina Del Rey- Pretty, but couldn't bring myself to do it. (Although I think Marina is a legit name in Brazil)

Hey! That's mine too. I loved that name and even used it as a character name in a couple of stories several years ago...but there's no way I'd name a kid that now. Well, maybe if Paris Hilton continues her darwinistic spiral out of the gene pool. If Owen Wilson ends up secretly being a mass-murderer or something, that'll ruin another long time favorite. He better not.
Jadzia, which is the only Polish female name I like (it might even be the only Polish name I like), but Star Trek killed it.

This is mine too. Although I can't use it on any future human children I have because I named my cat Ulysses. I still love the name though.
I also have always loved the name Raven; however, recently it's become pretty popular and my main criteria for a name is that it cannot be popular or common.

I believe it's pronounced "DECK-lun".
Levin. It's a family name, but my husband hated it.
Tristan. Again, husband didn't like it...he thought the kid would get picked on.
If we had had a girl, she would have been Olivia Joy. No girls for us.

Like Dangerosa, I would have chosen Catherine if there hadn't been others in the family before her.
Misery. Yep, I'm a King fan.
I like Persephone and Athena and other names from mythology as well, but I decided to just keep it vanilla. My daughter has a very common name, a little too common, in fact.
If my son had been a girl, he'd have been Savannah. I liked it at the time, but I think I'd have tired of it by now.
koeeoaddi, I like Tamar too, but I fear you'd have wound up with a bunch of people calling your kid Tamara or Tammy, so maybe you dodged a bullet there.

Adam. It was the dog's name. I didn't name the dog.
Sancho. It happens to be the name of several favorite historical figures... but sadly, it's also the name of the Quijote main character that's supposed to be "humorous". People hear "Sancho" and break out into laughter amid giggles of "Panza", which is both the character's lastname and the word for "belly" or "gut". Sigh.
Tamara is a relatively popular "exotic" name in Spain nowadays. There's a very good young singer called Tamara and an older famous-type-person who couldn't sing if her life depended on it.
Marina is a common name in Spain and Portugal, so I imagine in Brazil. Means "of the Sea". My mouther's cousin is a Marina.

It is also the last name of a very popular right-wing talk show host here in Boston. You might be able to use that if you don't want the porn explanation. It is a pretty name.
My family doesn't hold back when it comes to this stuff. My name is Maverick which I actually love and has served me well. My little brother named his first son Gunner. He and his wife like guns and hunting so they felt the name came naturally.

Porter for a boy (my favorite style of beer). good thing I had girl twins or they might have been "Porter" and "Stout"
I wanted Penelope as a girls name but China Wife was dead set against it. Fair enough as she liked Veronica and that one rubs me the wrong way.

Alice. Wouldn't want her being called "Alice in Wonderland" her whole upbringing (unless she wanted to :)) It would work as a middle name, but not with my favoriteest first name ever, "Elizabeth", because "Elizabeth Alice" is less than the sum of its parts due to not being euphonic.
Then again, my third favorite name is Rachel, and while Rachel Alice sounds a bit harsh, when combined with my last name it sounds nice.
Maybe my second daughter can be called Elizabeth somethingorother.

Wanted to name my second daughter Willow, but the MIL said "what if she winds up short and fat?" and everyone else said "Would you like some granola after you finish hugging that tree?" Also loved the name Prudence but didn't think that would be fair to the kid.
Also liked Zora and Aurora but got lots of lip curls tossing those around.

When I was preggers, we went looking at many sources for names. We saw an article for the frst computer generated jokes and found "Insect Brittle'. We thought it was hilarious and saw some real value in the idea. What little high school twinkie is gonna sit around scribbling "Mr. & Mrs. Insect Brittle' in her journals? Who's gonna mess with a kid named "Insect"? We had a good time with that idea and told the MIL over the phone one day. She slammed the phone down and refused to talk to us for 2 weeks. (Not that is was a bad thing...)
'Savannah Hilton' had been an option since that was the conception point but we ended up with a boy. Considering another popular Hilton right now, we dodged that one!
After we met the offspring we came to 'Corwin'. It's a nice historical name and from our favorite book series ('Nine Princes in Amber') and it's unique. He wears it well and there is never any confusion which 'Corwin' in any school or group. As an added bonus, it's not very corruptible (since 'Insect' would have eventually shifted to 'Bugger')
My favorite names I took out on the dogs - Theodora, Astrid, Coriander and Peapod. The rabbit got 'Edible Rex'.

During a recent "maybe we'll have a kid after all" conversation between my husband and I, it was discovered that my husband hates the name Micah, which sucks because I love it. He didn't veto Holden or Jonas though, so I still have hope.

If I had a son I would love to name him Gabriel. However, my asshole would pucker if anyone called him "Gabe." So, Gabriel will be the middle name for my nonexistent son.
I like the name Hannah for a girl but I won't be naming my daughter that because my partner nixed it. :(
By the way, I love the name Declan. An aquantaince of mine named her son Declan and after you say it a few times, it really sounds cool and works, even for a baby.

Once I married a Dutch guy it was evident that our children would have Dutch names. Our first child was such a Douwe that there was no controversy; he just is a Douwe, I don't know how to explain it.
I wanted Adriaan for Youngest but Dearly Beloved does not like it; so he is Daan instead which was as close as I could get. Ad being the other variant of Adriaan popular here and I don't care for that one.
I also wanted to name a boy either Jelle (YELL-eh) or Kees (case) but the first is sort of unfortunate Stateside and the other Dearly Beloved hated, too.
We both wanted to name our daughter Elke, but we didn't have one.

I have a bunch of names I'd love to use, but my wife hates (and vice versa I'm sure).
John Lennon (She won't allow me to name a son after a musician so obviously ;) )
Ray (Just doesn't like it)
Sarah (Ditto)
Jess (Ditto)
Elizabeth (Ditto)
Rosemary (She think it's too old-fashioned)
Dave (Our last name also starts with "Dave." I think that would sound cool, like Dave Davies, but she thinks it would sound dumb.)
Rubystreak and Caridwen, my wife and I both love Walter for a boy and Lily for a girl. We're likely to use both if we have the chance!

My nephew's name is Dryden. He's named after John Dryden (http://www.poemhunter.com/john-dryden/), an English poet.
Also, his mother's cousin is a member of Alien Ant Farm - which I assume is your favorite band. :)
I love the name Cassandra, but the story behind it is so tragic, I wouldn't give it to a child.
Samuel is another name I like, but I'd hate to tell my son he's named after a Terry Pratchett character. :D

No kids, but during one of those conversations about potential names, it became alarmingly clear that Mr. Del and I don't really have a lot in common when it comes to names.
I love the name Kaye, but could never use it now because it's the name of an in-law, the kind that you wouldn't want to name a child after. Too much baggage.
I also like Bonnie, but he just doesn't like it, in a strong, visceral dislike way.
We're both extremely fond of Lydia, but it's creeping up the popularity charts which would make us very hesitant to use it. (If presented with an actual baby, we might have to reconsider this, because it's one of the few we agree on.)
Sadly enough the other name we both like is Cowboy (for a boy), which we realize is somewhat ridiculous. We had been trying to think of outrageous names for a laugh, and Cowboy made the list, and then we realized we sort of liked it, for real. We probably just need to get a dog and name it Cowboy.
koeeoaddi, I had a student named Tamar a few years back, and it was the first time I heard the name -- now I just love it.

Oh, please use it! I'd love to see someone use it, even if I don't.
Funny related story: Some friends and I were discussing names one evening and I mentioned that I liked the name Holden. One of my friends asked if it was because of some soap opera character or other and when I said no she had a sudden realization: "It's one of those literary things, isn't it?" (She's not a reader; I majored in English Lit.)
Just saw Jennshark's post. I love Flannery too. I named one of my Sims that recently.

If and when we have a daughter:
Ava - I've loved it for years, but now 1. it's too popular and 2. my cousin just named her daughter Ava
Samantha - one of my favorite names, but my husband doesn't want our child's first and last name starting with the same letter
Lily - he hates how it sounds with our last name
For our son, and any future sons:
Aaron - we both like it, but a friend has a daughter named Erin.
Other than those, I don't think we really have many names that we can't use.

John Lennon (She won't allow me to name a son after a musician so obviously ;) )
And what's so wrong with that? ;)
My dad actually wanted to name me John or Lennon at some point. Much as I like the Beatles, I'm glad my mom didn't approve. Now, if they'd named the middle brother Lennon - he's a Communist - it would've been spooky.

for a boy I like Aubrey and Florian, but both sound like girl names (even though they're not.)
For girls, I like Philippa and Pippi for short, but there's that whole... longstockings thing.
And then if I'm going to continue in the tradition of my mother and grandmother and so on, there are other limits.
No Emily, Gabrielle, Carrie/Kara/Carolyn, Sarah... nothing that would sound stupid following "Mary."

So that name is just about shot for me.

If we have a son my SO wants to name him Percival. Over my dead body. No son of mine is going to go through the playground of life saddled with that bullseye on his back. I told her if she likes the name so much she should name our next pet Percy.
I have always loved the name Aidan since I first saw the actor Aidan Quinn in Reckless with Daryl Hannah. It's so popular now though. I also think it would make a good girls name.
I do kind of like the idea of giving girls certain names that are traditionally male; like Michael or Kieran. Or even the above mentioned "Daryl."
Last names as first names can add a flair if you don't get carried away. Kaiser for a boy? I'd do it. McGregor? Yeah, why not?

That actually IS a great name for a dog. My down-the-street neighbor named his Boston Terror....er....Terrier "Cowboy" and it really works! ;)
I like the name Reyna, but Himself doesn't. We both have "R" names, though, and it'd be kind of corny to name a kid with an R name, too, especially considering our LAST name is an R name. [QUOTE=Elza B]Samantha - one of my favorite names, but my husband doesn't want our child's first and last name starting with the same letter [QUOTE]
That's funny. Both my sister and myself were given "S" names specifically so it would match our last name. My mom's initials were the same letter before she was married and she always liked it. Strange how tastes differ...
I always loved the name "Arete," after the Greek concept of honor and glory, but my husband thinks its crazy. And, as a friend pointed out, she would have to go through her entire life saying, "No, my name is not pronounced A-Reet."
I also love the name "Amina" after the kick-ass Nigerian queen, but as my husband and I are both from northern Europeon origin (read: whitest people imaginable), it would not seem to fit.
The one name we can agree on, ironically, is "Jane." :)

Pretty much most of my favorite names have been ruled out now that I have an SO with a long and difficult Polish last name. There are about four first names that go well with it and he and his brother have two of them. And the cadence of it is especially troubling--it ends with a "skee" sound, so I can't use any multisyllabic first name that ends with "ee," like Emily or Rosemary, lest the kid be doomed to a name that has the same rhythm as "Wile E. Coyote."
As a kid I wanted a daughter so I could name her Calico. I am very glad I did not get pregnant as a kid.

Like The Chao Goes Mu, I love the name "Gabriel" but hate "Gabe," so I couldn't name a hypothetical kid that. Plus I'd be afraid he'd get saddled with juvenile "gay" jokes. It's unfortunate, as it's a beautiful name. I like a lot of the "-iel" and "-ael" names (like Daniel, Nathaniel, Michael, Raphael, and Azrael--however, I don't like the "-uel" names like Samuel and Lemuel. Weird, but taste is taste. Might be my synesthesia--the colors of those three letters just don't work together for me.)
Other names I like a lot but have to be happy that I'm naming fictional people are Alastair, Trevor (I'm still mildly miffed at J. K. Rowling for giving one of my favorite names to a *toad*), Stefan, and Conrad. For girls, I like Kim (but not Kimberly), Anastasia, Valerie, Verity, and Morgan. I also think "Anathema" is a very pretty gothish name, but no way would I saddle anybody with that one (except one of my WoW characters :) )

There's a witch in Good Omens called Anathema Device.
Well, she's not precisely a witch, but close enough.

I really liked the name Gabriel too, but couldn't bring myself to give my kiddo an angel name. I wanted to call him Gaby baby  Mrsin did not approve. We did give him the middle name Jackson, cause ya know, that's where we made him when we were on a ski vacation. Kind of like naming him Camero when you think about it. Even worse we told him his middle name was Jackson because Michael Jackson was his cousin, hehehehe. He didn't get the joke and told all his friends; this was during the "Bad" era. Do I have to mention we're so white bread we almost have pink eyes? Yeah, teasing ensued.

Samantha - one of my favorite names, but my husband doesn't want our child's first and last name starting with the same letter
Speaking as the above, it's not so bad -- except your initials are SS, and when you discover the connotation of SS after you've been drawing your own S's in a rather angular, lightning-like fashion because lightning is cool... let's just say it's a little embarrassing. :(
I have a lot of male ancestors named Paris. It's a man's name. It's a good man's name. For obvious reasons, I won't ever be using it.
I quite like very old fashioned names that I would never saddle a child with. Genevieve. Paris. Ephraim. Mildred.
I'm thinking if I have a girl she might be Sophie. A boy, David. Even if that's a phenomenally common name; I've just known so many remarkably splendid Davids.

For girls I love the name Emily but it's far too popular and clashes with our last name. I also adore the name Elizabeth but if used with our last name it sounds like a slightly mispelled version of a minor starlet's name so that's out.
For boys I like the name Benjamin but my husband has a similarly sounding first name so we nixed it unless I can convince him otherwise if I ever get pregnant again.

Daniel (predates my husband) -- because it's my husband's Dad's name, which is cool, but also his asshole brother's name. Not so cool.
Kayla -- far too close to our last name.
I'm not allowed to name any of my future children Wendy, even though I really like it. My mom knew a girl in elementary school named Wendy who happens to have had the same last name as my boyfriend (which would be the last name our kids would have, if we had any). This is no ordinary, "You can't name her Wendy because I got beat up by a Wendy every day in fourth grade." This special Wendy smeared poop on the bathroom walls at school. So I guess I sympathize with my mom. I wouldn't want my granddaughter's name to conjure up that image.

If my son had been a girl, she would have been named Desireé. Looking back now, it's probably a good thing she was a he.

The ex and I ALMOST named the daughter Trinian (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Trinian's_School ), as it was 1) a reference to very bad girls who did fantastic and nobel things (well, usually)... and 2, the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy character (book, not movie) named "Trini"..
At the last moment, though, probably due to medication, "we" (read woman after 14 hrs hard labour) decided on Maggie.
NOT Margaret... Maggie
She turned out OK, despite us...

I love the name Esmerelda, but it would be a bit much to saddle a kid with. What if she grew up to be a quiet, mousy type instead of a tempestuous beauty?
I love the sound of the word Oubliette, but it would be incredibly cruel to name a child that. Sure is pretty, though.

I'm young and single, so this is purely hypothetical.
I feel destiny wants to pair me up with a Japanese woman, so some of my choices reflect that.
For boys:
Chris. All of my best friends have been Chris, strangely enough.
Raphael. It's a kick-ass name. Has an archangel and a famous painter associated with it. Oh, and a ninja turtle!
Morbo. Ok, I would never do this, but I think it sounds cool and I love Futurama.
Lupin, after Lupin from the anime "Lupin the 3rd" Pronounced " 'Lou Pahn"
For girls:
Jennifer, a pretty classic and also my first crush.
Emily, also a favorite name and my favorite cousin.
Raven, somebody mentioned it here and it sounds awesome.
Miyuki, after the girl I lost my purity too ;) Means "precious beautiful"

Linus. Too bad Charles M. Schulz had to ruin it.
This is mine too. Plus, unless I married a guy with a Dutch last name, it wouldn't sound properly euphonic.
