View Full Version : Jersey Dopefest the Third: Sunday June 10th at 2pm

What Exit?
04-05-2007, 01:59 PM
I am going to host another DopeFest at my house as a barbeque. I am leaning towards June and I am open to July. Therefore, for the next week or so I will take feedback on which weekend works best for all interested Dopers.

I am convenient to two Parkway exits (of course). Maybe we can figure out a weekend and gauge interest. I would hope to see people from NJ, NY and Penn and anywhere else of course but I am about 45 minutes on a good day from Brooklyn and 1.5 hours from Philly.

The last DopeFest was very good and had a good turnout. As usual I will ensure we have plenty of basics to barbeque and to nosh on and then many other dopers brought various dishes, deserts or drinks. It is mostly BYOB, I will have some beer in a cooler and mostly diet soda.

* We are kid friendly and this might make things easier.

* Last time we managed some carpooling and train station pickups. I am sure we could do so again.

I have verified that it was okay to start this thread with TubaDiva.
Still pertinent details are:
The understanding is that you're all adults and you're getting into this on your own, the management assumes no responsibility. You're putting on this event, we're not, but we do allow house room for those kinds of threads within reasonable limits.

The only weekend that I know won't work for me June 23/24. Other than that, things are pretty much wide open.

Thanks for hosting once again!

The first two weekends in June should be fine for me and my family. The next four are taken up with family and vacation.

I very much enjoyed the last get together. :)

I've been unable to make these in the past because they've been primarily Friday night/Saturday hangouts, and I can't get there because I'm Sabbath-observant. If there's going to be something on Sunday besides breakfast, I may or may not be able to make it (definitely not on 6/17), but definitely don't plan around me! It's nice to get the shout-out, though :)

I'm sort of thinking about/planning a mid-ish June trip back to NJ, so I'll keep an eye on the thread for the finalized date. Consider me a maybe. I really would love to meet you all.

What Exit?
04-06-2007, 02:21 PM
Shecky, you'll have the shortest trip. You're just one exit south.

GilaB, if there are no objections, I will shoot for a Sunday as it accommodates you and actually is a little easier on me.

twickster: I hope you can make it this time, but I least I got to meet you at the Philly Prison trip and I should be meeting you again at the Gardens. The kids are looking forward to the excuse to go to the aquarium in Baltimore again.

Veuve_ClicquotNJ, cool and thanks for the offer.

Annie-Xmas, I will definitely stay away from July 4th weekend. So this will probably work out for you.

psycat90: I hope it works out for you with the timing.

LavenderBlue & MsRobyn: We'll see how everyone else weighs in, so far it looks like your respective schedules are the only direct conflict.

Yeah, I understand. It's just that we're going to be celebrating a boatload of really good stuff with my family in Los Angeles, including my grandmother's 80th birthday, which is the whole basis for the trip. The rest of the summer is fair game.

Ah, well. If we can't make it, we can't make it.

All I need is some notice to plan it out and I will be there. I am not sure whether or not I will be in NJ or PA this summer but if I am in PA i will have to come back to Jerz in either June or July for a weekend to take care of some business. As soon as I know the date I will just plan everything for one weekend so you can count me in.

I might be able to go. I am planning on being at my parents' place in Jersey for two weeks, but I don't yet know when those two weeks will be. It will depend on what apartment I end up moving into up here in NH and when I end up doing it. I will make an effort to be able to do it, and I will of course keep you guys posted. I would love to be able to go and finally meet some more Dopers! :)

I'd like to come, just to talk some Yankee baseball and Giant football with people who know far more about both teams than I do. If I do go (which would be decided much closer to the date), I'd be driving from Queens and available to pick-up a Queens / Brooklyn doper or three. I promise to limit my Jersey jokes to a dozen or less if I do attend!

I plan to have meats for the grill, Hamburgers, Hotdogs and Sweet Italian Sausages. I will lay in a lot of diet soda and some regular Coke. I will have Ice Tea (homemade) and seltzer.

I will have some chips and dips and I will pick up some sides if it looks like we will be short.

My kids will be there, ages 7 & 9. Will any other kids be there?

Still open for others to join in.

I'm sure we'll be bringing something, I just haven't planned things out that far in advance (although damn, this is starting to get close!). I'll say it's subject to change, but there is a good chance of a homemade fruit salad.

Please just confirm the train time near the day and we'll arrange for someone to pick you up.

I only have one grill, last time I grilled veggie burgers, we put down some foil to grill on to prevent meat contamination. Will that be okay?

Never too late and Soda or beer sounds good. I will have a lot of diet soda, cans of coke and a case of Bass Ale. I will have some juice boxes and home made Ice tea. Any other drinks should probably be brought.

Can I get a ride with you? It's much less complicated to chip in for gas than to coordinate septa and patco timetables and arrange a ride from the closest station.

Also, what is this coconut incident?
:D We were making a carrot cake for the recent "Welcome Antigen to Baltimore" DopeFest.
danceswithcats said, "Okay, time for the coconut," and I grabbed the bag of coconut off the counter and turned around to get the scissors. I cut the end off the bag, not realizing he'd already snipped the other end of it off. I'd been spilling coconut all over the place.
Luckily, he'd just cut off a small corner, or it would have been a huge mess.

I had missed this thread before. Is it too late to get in on this? And what should I bring?

Anaamika, if you want to drive down as far as Newburgh, I can drive the rest of the way and would welcome the company. Anyone else who's coming down from NY email me if you need a ride.

Well, I am out. I will be getting into NJ next weekend, but I think plans have been made for me already, so I'll most likely be in NYC for the parade on Sunday, which is cool since I haven't been to it in like 15 years. Have a great time!

I'd like to come, if it's not too late to respond by now. (I realize we're only a week away at this point.) If I can still come, could you send me directions? And is it OK if my SO comes, too?

I can, indeed, bring food of some kind. What sorts of food would we still be in need of (assuming it's OK if I come, of course.)

You and your SO are most welcome to come, please Email me, it is in my profile and I will respond with directions and a map.

As far as food, maybe a desert or snack food would be best.

I asked my parents, but they said no because we're North of DC, it's in New Jersey, and It's on a school afternoon/night. :( :( Ah, the perils of only being 13.

I can certainly bring dessert things or snack food of some kind. I don't know what I'm bringing yet, but whatever it is, I promise it will be good.

My SO will not be joining us, unfortunately. Ah, well.

I'm thinking at this point I won't make it. Not feeling very well. And not inclide to sneeze all over the BBQ. But I feel bad. I wanted to bring my cranberry tart. That's best 5000 calories you''ll ever find!(But cranberries are good for you!!!!)

(Next time at my place...but might be a while as I'm moving house.)

I guess I'm the first one to report back. It was a blast! I love meeting Dopers, especially all the really cool ones that were at this Dopefest. :)

Reporting in. DocCathode and I are safely back, while Jamaika a jamaikaiaké and liberty3701 were successfully taken to their train, all reasonably well-guided by the inaugural run of the TomTom.

Thanks again, What Exit, for having us!

Thanks for a great party, Jim!

BTW, the alternate directions worked great:

- 5.9 miles to (a clearly marked) route 18
- another 12 before crossing route 1 and re-entering familiar territory
- 25 miles total to route 287
- 59.4 miles total to get home, in just about an hour-twenty.
- And no tolls!

Not a route that I'd take during rush hour, but definitely better than the Garden State on a summer weekend.
