View Full Version : Intolerance on this board

So I have been posting for the last couple of weeks. I am going to be honest, this board is like Groupthink. There are very very few differing opinions. And if someone does offer an differing/opposing view, they are slaughtered even though their opinion is valid and argument sound. While this is true in all parts of the board, this is especially true in the political discussions. Everyone feeds off the hatred on this board. My theory is that people who feel the need to be that narrow minded are looking for control in their own lives. People, its time to take care of that issue.

I am an extremely independent (politically and otherwise), open minded thinker. I honestly don't see a place for me here. I am disappointed as I thought it was going to be different. Oh, and I did lurk for a bit but I think I may have just tried to deny because some of the threads are funny.

Oh well. Goodbye. But remember, hate and intolerance never gets anyone anywhere. You end of imploding in it.

Goodbye. I hope you find a board better suited for you, and I'm not at all sarcastic in saying that. I, too, feel that there are certain topics which meet a wall of intolerance, and I have to choose my battles. For me, the good times outweigh the tongue-biting I choose to do. I can see why it wouldn't for everyone.

Good luck, wherever you end up!

(Sorry, I just noticed this is in the Pit. Uh...goodbye, Fuckwit? Eh, I have no vitriol for this one. Sorry to be MPSIMSey.)

Well, first I was going to say to stay and fight the good fight. Of course, you'd have to join to actually do that.

But then I went to check out your posts and see which political threads you were arguing in GD and found that you haven't posted to a single GD thread.
So how can you tell about people's politics here and how they defend them?

Well, anyway, I hope you find a place that you find enjoyable. Perhaps before your trial runs out, you could describe the kind of place you're looking for and people could suggest places for you to try. Just a thought. Good luck!

Whatever happened to reaching a conclusion that something, or somewhere, isn't for you and simply moving on without making a grand exit?

The internet is full of messageboards. They are what they are. You can't change them. The vibe of each messageboard is what it is. Just go and find one which works for you and happy days!

Getting worked up about a messageboard is like trying to draw a smell - that is, a fruitless exercise in exasperation.

Oh, I would add that the last thing I've ever perceived the Straight Dope as having is a "group think" mentality. Far from it.

I resolve that we clamp down on dissidents. They will only bring fury to the people and be our downfall. We will be ONE VOICE! We will embark on a new era of prosperity and power. Follow me and we will find glory!

Oh, wait. We want it the other way. Never mind.

I'll file this plan away until due time.

From my time here, I noticed that this board is a bit like real life. There are some funny and friendly people that you can chat with and then there are some jerks that wonder around and don't know when to shut up. You have to be will to put up a fight, its the survival of the fittest. If they don't go down, you do.

I am an extremely independent (politically and otherwise), open minded thinker. I honestly don't see a place for me here. I am disappointed as I thought it was going to be different.

Serious question: what makes you think any of us give a shit? What's your opinion to anyone here? If someone who'd been around for a while, established some sort of reputation, and then made a thread like this, it might be significant, but (and no offence intended here) you're a nobody. We've got no basis to evaluate the worth of your opinion. You haven't provided any evidence for your conclusions about this board, and you've given no reason to think you've got any particularly valuable insight in general.

Imagine it like this: you work in a store. One day, someone you've never clapped eyes on before walks in, marches straight up to your register, and announces they don't like your store and never intend to shop there for any reason, and then leaves. How would you react? Would you honestly even care? If you did care, how could you do anything about it? You don't know anything about the person or what you need to change to satisfy them.

So, I'm genuinely curious: what the hell is the point of starting this thread?

Vanity, probably. Many people suffer under the delusion that the rest of the world actually gives a shit about their opinion. Listen up Sugartits, what you need is balls. This board is all about people with certain attitudes to be defended or promoted with gusto and sound reasoning. We do have respected posters who way more often than not promote ideas that don't fit with popular opinion like Sam Stone, Bricker, Shodan and Valteron to name a few. They do get a lot of attention and if the general population of this board aren't buying their ideas and facts at least these brave posters have an opportunity to be heard and make a difference. If you can't stand the heat, you better get back to the kitchen.

there's actually a very interesting psychological phenomenon going on here, which I've seen on the board several times. Random Internet Surfer finds the Dope, thinks "Wow, a forum for intelligent people who fight ignorance. I'm intelligent and have vast knowledge, surely they will all bow before me." Then when we don't, they leave in a huff.

Well, since our esteemed OP has not seen fit to monitor her driveby shitting I can only surmise that after telling us how intolerant we are because we argue to consensus it's now time to visit a breastfeeding message board to extol the virtues of formula, to explain to the long hair board how superior short hair is due to ease of maintenance, to rail at the large penis support board group for their lack of helpfulness in aiding the short cocked to cope with their deficiencies and to explain to the board dedicated to performance cars that they'd be ever so much better off riding tiny mopeds.

We're so darned busy being intolerant and mean that we just don't appreciate how difficult the OP has it what with monitoring the internet for correctness and all--the responsibility must be crushing!

I like this - it's what I get most from the Dope, really. I like the humor, and some of the debates, but mostly I hear and learn things I'd have never known otherwise.

As for the OP, I'm heartbroken that the OP is going to be leaving. After all I'd enjoyed and been illuminated by all the posts they'd left in other threads I've been involved in...

Oh, wait, this is the first time I've seen the poster that I can recall.

There are posters who've left whom I have missed, but someone I never knew? Get over yourself, peakwattle. I don't think anyone here is going to care. Even if you're as exquisite as you seem to believe, I sure haven't seen any of it. Nor has anyone in the thread, it seems.

My thoughts; kudos to Elen for spelling "independent" right. Credit where credit is due and all that. I don't think I feed off of hatred. If this was a board of haters, I don't think I would have anything to do with it. Is there acrimony and arguing? Yup. Is it filled with hate? No, I don't think so. Is it full of people who don't suffer fools gladly? Hell yeah, and good on 'em. Maybe I'm just so used to the "fuck you!" "No, fuck YOU!" that sometimes goes on that I don't even notice it any more.

I think there are some subjects where Dopers can be dogmatic and closed-minded. There aren't many, though, and if you feel like going nine rounds with rigourous debaters, you can certainly still discuss them. Don't come in with both guns blazing on your opinions and expect them to automatically be treated with respect without some kind of basis for them.

It kinda makes sense that there would be some degree of like-thinking here; we are a community after all, and the people who are completely different from us probably don't feel at home here and don't stay.

there's actually a very interesting psychological phenomenon going on here, which I've seen on the board several times. Random Internet Surfer finds the Dope, thinks "Wow, a forum for intelligent people who fight ignorance. I'm intelligent and have vast knowledge, surely they will all bow before me." Then when we don't, they leave in a huff.

Maybe we should put something on the homepage saying "You're more likely to find your own ignorance than to identify it in others. Come expecting to learn, not to preach."

I agree. :D

And rather than test their intelligence and knowledge, they throw a hissy fit and wander off.

Because although the OP has said she's taking her ball and going home, through the power of the Internet we can create a new ball and keep playing with it.

Or to put it another way, if this were about her, it would be far less interesting. Which is kind of the point she seems to have missed in the first place.

Can you at least point to an example of a sound argument that was met with the kind of slaughter you describe?

And this:You end of imploding in it.The individual's preceding posts are all fairly straightforward and grammatically clean, and then the exit tantrum concludes with that awkward "gem"? Who cares, though? It's just an opportunity to trigger one of the SDMB's patented 'amusing riffs on a theme' threads. it usually takes an incredibly stupid OP in the pit to trigger them, but once they kick off, they create their own justification. At this point, I doubt that 90% of the people participating in the thread give a hoot about the OP's personal opinion. Of course, I could be wrong, and we'll end of imploding in it.

The problem is a majority of this board is against God, Conservatism, morality, and traditional values, and the fact that they're in the BBQ Pit just means they're angry as well. So of course, expressing anything with regards to those topics will get you flamed. But don't let the angry namecallers run you off, you just have to call them out for their personal attacks and not respond in kind, and they'll look like the idiot.

I'll grant you that we've got more liberals than the normal rlgatherings, more atheists . but morality? there's a 6 page pile on ragging on a woman who was bragging about cheating on her hubby. at most folks are saying 'if it wasn't an open marriage in the first place, you owe it to him to tell him now'. additionally, I've routinely seen pile ons for folks who steal - from the woman who bragged about her husband taking stuff from work after he'd been fired/let go or whatever, to the woman who bounced a check at a home party.
that's very traditional morality , IME

When we have had polls on the subject, which admittedly are not going to be entirely reliable, IIRC atheists/agnostics accounted for somewhere around 40-45% of the respondents. While much higher than the general population, it is unlikely that even here this group makes up a majority. Since many agnostics wouldn't agree that they are "against God," the percentage who would ascribe to that would be even smaller.

The percentage of really militant atheists on the board is obscured I think by a few extremely vocal individuals in GD.

The majority of this board is against God? Not that I've seen. In fact some of the most respected posters on this board believe in God.

Conservatism. After six years of Conservative government in America even some conservatives are getting disillusioned with it.

Morality. I think you will find this is one of the most moral boards on the internet. Just because the majority of people don't agree with your morality does not make them any less moral.

Traditional values. What traditional values are these? Sending children down the mines? Slave labour? Domestic violence? The woman as property of her husband? If you could let us know what traditional values then you might be able to make a case, but until then I will just take this as threadshitting.

Bursting bubbles is fun, if they're legitimately offered. (See the speed-of-light thread in the Cecil's Columns forum, frex.) What I won't do is play ball when it looks to me like an obviously manufactured facade. Bottom line, I don't buy the OP and I won't reward its creator by dancing just because the song is familiar. However, while I may think it's a transparent attempt at manipulating board behavior, that doesn't mean y'all should pass up the opportunity for a few easy chuckles, so I retract that element of my previous post. Knock yourselves out; I just won't be joining in.

See, my post was proof of the zerg rush one faces on this board :) After further review, I'll concede the "morality" issue in most regards, as I did see the cheating thread earlier. BUT by "morality" I was meaning a traditional view of morality, with regards to marriage, sex and drugs. Generally, liberals tend to be a little more lenient on those issues, and there are more liberals on this board than conservatives, meaning there is less traditional morality. So showing support of traditional morality can get you attacked around here, for an example see the post where I said I didn't agree with a woman poster here who didn't want to get married and have kids...pretty sure it was about 4 pages of personal attacks for expressing my "traditional" opinion.

As for conservatism, well personally I'm more libertarian and I'm not going to defend this administration or the current crop of conservatives, and even with regards to the sex and drugs things I stated above, I'm liberal in that regard. I don't want the government telling me or anyone what to do unless they are harming others. But someone expressing conservative ideas here will likely be shot down moreso than outside of the internet, as there is a lower percentage of conservative members on the SDMB than in the real world.

And for God, there is a higher proportion of atheists on this board than in the general public. I'm not sure if that's just a "young" thing, but I believe a recent survey showed 82% of the country were Christians, and about 10% atheists. I'm betting that greater than 10% of the SDMB is atheist, which is why I said that comments regarding God are generally hot topics around here.

And because this is the pit, fuckwit.

And thank you for proving my final point rayh.
