View Full Version : So, What's the Name of Your Dog(s)? And, Where Did it Come From?

Out of curiosity...

What kind of dog(s) do you have?

What did you name them? And, why did you choose that particular name?

I did a search, and oddly, didn't find a poll of dog names! I know many of you, like myself, are proud of your pets. And, I was just wondering... Whats up with your pooch!?

My dog is a 3/4 Rottie and 1/4 Black Lab named Prime Minister Boomer von Shitferbreath. You can call him Boomer. He pretty much looks like an all black Rottweiler, and he earned his name from his hearty attempts at barking like a big dog as a puppy. He's now 3 and a half years old and is 115 lbs of thunder. Ahhh.... the #1 Troop!

I've got a (mostly) rhodesian ridgeback named Tango. She was named by an ex GF who misspoke Spanish. Apparently she was supposed to be Tengo--as in "Yo tengo un perro." But the ex had a bit of a southern accent, so no one understood.

Now she goes by Tango, Dug, ,T, occasionally Slobbydog Milosovic, and a new one, P.J., since she's getting old, taking painkillers for arthritis and has become a Puppy Junky.

Original dearly-departed pug was named Chang Lee. Sounded chinese and, well, pugs supposedly came from there. I wanted to name the second pug Su Ling but was outvoted by the rest of the clan so she is Jade instead because, well, Jade is conceived as a popular chinese gemstone. The chihuahua is named Isa which was selected from a list of spanish feminine names. There are also nicknames too numerous to count.

My golden retriever is named Dolly.

On the long trip to go get her when she was a puppy, my mom and I milled over a lot of names. We couldn't think of a good one. The people we bought her from said they'd named her Dolly after Dolly Parton, because she "sings" when she yawns (she still does).

My folks had just come back from visiting Tennessee, including Dollywood, so we thought that was a pretty good name.

She has grown into her name really well, too. She is very blonde, has a skinny waist, and a very large chest for a girl (she actually gains her weight up front, not in her belly).

I gave her a middle name of Louise, just because it sounds cool when you give her that "I am angry enough to call you by your full name" voice, and even though that's not Dolly Parton's middle name, it sounds like it could be!

I've got a mutt, we think he's half lab/ half springer spaniel.

His name is Cash, after Johnny Cash, because he is The Dog in Black. He is all black except for a white patch on his chest.

Our dog is an Australian Silky Terrier cross something else. The pet shop said Chihuahua but we think he is more likely a Maltese.

We called him Milford after Milford Sound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milford_Sound) in New Zealand. We wanted to name him after somewhere in NZ and we thought Doubtful (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doubtful_Sound) sounded a bit odd.

I have two dogs, that given space, I will go on forever about. Since you are just asking names, you are fortunate.

I name my animals after birds. My Smooth Border Collie, Gavia, is named after the Loon. (Black and White, Minnesota bird, kind of crazy...)

My Pyrennean Shepherd is called Corbi. Her registered name is La Brise Corbeau Doree, which means La Brise's Golden Raven. I love the Corvids, and wanted to name her after the brightest bird out there. She is, and she flies.

Ladybug was named by her previous owners. She is a lab mix, and is about 11 years old. She also goes by Bug, Boo and Boogie.

Jasmine was named for the jasmine vine that was in bloom when I got her. She is a blackmouth curr mix and is 5. She goes by Jazz and Doofus.

Clilfford, my Italian Greyhound, came with his name from the rescue place. They had an animated dogs naming convention (others were Scooby and Snoopy). There is a tad of irony there, in that my Clifford is knee-high and weighs about 13 pounds, but the TV Clifford is as big as a house.

He is mostly black with white "spats" and chest so he looks red carpet ready at any time so my mom started calling him "The Cary Grant of Dogs".

Dino is either a samoyed or an eskie....I adopted him from an animal hospital and even the vet wasn't sure what he is. Anyway, I brought him home and tried to figure out what to call him. For two weeks, he ran around named "puppy". I kept looking at him hoping a name would come to me. So some movie or other came on TV and it was produced by Dino De Laurentiis. The name "Dino" jumped out at me. He really just looks like a "Dino". Wish I had a picture to post.

OP, I like your username.

My female Jack Russell is named Scout, for the character in To Kill A Mockingbird. She (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/timstaab/detail?.dir=a2f9&.dnm=88bare2.jpg&.src=ph) is the one lying on my wife's knee. The male, Buddy, is sitting upright. He belongs to my oldest son. I don't know where the name came from.

I had a cocker spaniel named Lady. She was named after Lady Jane Grey, England's nine-days' queen, because I was reading a biography when I got her, but everyone thought she was named after "Lady and the Tramp."

When she was 14 I decided to get a puppy. I got a little cocker boy and named him Linus, because it started with "L" to go with Lady and I thought it was a cool name.

Two weeks later, Lady died. I didn't want to raise an "only" puppy and I was concerned about my ability to give the little guy the attention and love he deserved, because I was really broken-hearted about Lady. So my parents gave me a second puppy for my birthday, a little girl, with the proviso that I name her "Lucy" to go with Linus.

So now I have two 2 year old blond cockers, Linus and Lucy. Lucy goes by Lulu and Linus seems to go by Dammit! :)

... they'd named her Dolly after Dolly Parton, because she "sings" when she yawns (she still does).

I can relate... When Boomer yawns he emits a low frequency "Yaaaaa" followed by the sound of his mouth closing *CLOMP!*

...calling him "The Cary Grant of Dogs".

The Boom gets all excited when he hears the word handsome... It's rediculous. He automatically assumes it's all about him.

Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie)

Daisy- because I had thought about naming my daughter that but felt it was too old-fashioned. Plus, the puppy looked like a Daisy!

Scout is her middle name- from To Kill A Mockingbird- again, I couldn't name my daughter scout, so the dog got it!

My dog is Maggie May. She was left at our clinic in the month of May, so Maggie May just came up as a name. I did name her but I never intended to keep her and she was a clinic dog for a while before she came home with me. I don't really like the name actually but she grew into it. Sometimes she is called Maggot, Maggadocious, Magnadoodle and just Mag or Mags, which all seem to fit better than Maggie May which is now only used when she's in trouble.

She's sort of an odd looking pitt mix, maybe with cattle dog. I think pitts are much maligned but we won't get into that here.

My 11 year old sheltie is named Cherokee Blaze. He was the first purebred dog I ever had. His momma's name was Apache Blaze, so we named him Cherokee Blaze. He used to be very fast, too! He goes by Blaze. He's also called fat-belly boy, Blaze Puppy, Angel Pie, and Barky McBarksalot. He's my sweetie!

My stray black Lab, about 3 years old, is called Lucy. I found her about a year ago. We went through a bunch of names before my husband and I could agree on one. She goes by Lucybelle, Lucy Goosey, and Shadow (she follows me everywhere!) I love her a lot, too. She likes to sit on my lap! She weighs 50 pounds! We snuggle in the recliner together.

I want another dog, but my family says "NO!!!" very loudly. I swear I could be the crazy hoarding dog lady...

My last dog's name was Belton. We always used to get our dogs from the pound (knowing they'd probably be gassed if we didn't), but for various inexplicable reasons the pound kept being closed when we went to get a new dog. When it was finally open, after several fruitless trips, we got our wonderful, friendly, sweet new dog and my dad said, "Well, better late than never!" The family couldn't agree on a name otherwise, so we took that as an acronym: BLTN = Belton. He was a skinny, light brown-and-white mutt, mostly beagle, I'd say.

We have a cat now, Sal, who was named by his previous owners. The little girl of that family wanted a girl cat and had named him "Sally," which we shortened to "Sal." We don't know if he has any Italian blood, but he doesn't seem to mind! Sal is a standard-issue American shorthair cat, mostly black with a little white under his chin and on one leg.

My dog's name is Chili Dog. It comes from my (then) 4 year old being funny. We debated on the name, didn't want the typical chihuahua names and then my son offered "let's call him Chili Dog!" We all got a good chuckle out of it and the name stuck.

We have 2 barn cats named "momma cat" for obvious reasons and "mr moo cow" because he is white with brown/black cow spots and was a very fat kitten.

The best pet name we ever had was a black cat with one white paw that I had when I was a kid. His name was Pyewacket. Bonus points to anyone who (without GIS or Wikipedia) knows the reference.

I have 2 Boxers: a 17 month old (mostly) white male named Loki, after the Norse God of Mischief; and Freya, a 14 week old seal female named after the Norse Goddess of Misadventure that we got just this past weekend. If you know Boxers, the names are very applicable.

Neither has a pet nickname yet, both are generically refered to as 'Butthead'. A bonus I found out yesterday was that Freya (the dog) was previously named Godiva because of her dark brown color, and there is a candy company in Norway named Freia that makes chocolate...

Previously, we had a French Bulldog named Maddy (short for Madmoiselle Brie), with a nickname of Fuzzbutt; another (deceased) Boxer named Satin and called Satan; and the first Boxer of my adult life was Sadie the VunderDog, with too many nicknames to count.

My wife had a jack russell when she was younger. When she bought a new one 2 years ago, she thought he looked exactly like her other Jack, so she gave him the same name, Bandit.

When we moved to Florida from Virginia we left our kids behind (old kids), but soon Bandit was a bit lonely. So we took him to the dog store and let him pick out a companion. He chose a little female Jack and I got to name her.

To me there was only one name possible, Carrie. Sally Fields' name from Smokey and the Bandit movies. Her nickname was Frog but I didn't want to have species identity problems.

She had puppies a year later and Wifey named them as they were born: Hercules, Blaze, Timmy, Jesse, Katy, Bela and Star (later Starbuck).

and we are all living happily ever after.

Has something to do with witches, but I can't remember any specifics. As for the significance of the black cat with one white paw, I don't have a clue as to how that ties in, except for black cats and witches being forever linked in most people's minds. I'll have to do a search now, darn your cat's eyes!

Currently, we have two dogs.

Our Yellow Lab is officially named "Smith's Sweet Sandy" -- so she's Sandy to us. Over the years, though, she's had a variety of other nicknames: Thumper (for tail-thumping), Staple Snoot (when she had staples in the top of her muzzle after an odd encounter with a Mexican bayonet plant), and Damn Dog (after she went over the six-foot block wall fence for the tenth time).

Our Belgian Malinois is named Buddy because that's his personality -- he's your buddy, he's your pal.

The most unusual name we've come up with is the one for our black Lab mix (who was put down last December at 12 1/2 years old). She was a pound puppy, and we sat around for a couple of days trying to figure out what to name her. Her coat was so bright that it GLEAMED when it was clean. At the time, the hubby and I were playing Magic: The Gathering. One of the cards in it was called a Mox Jet. So I suggested we name the dog Mox Jet and call her Moxie. The hubby liked Moxie and it stuck.

The big dog is a border collie/lab mix. We adopted her from a no-kill shelter. Her previous owners named her Bernadette. We call her Bernie. Boring, huh?

Our little dog is a new addition - she was wandering around our neighborhood in the dead of winter looking all forlorn and scrawny and pathetic (http://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i178/fairychatmom/ScruffyDog/?action=view&current=snacktime.jpg), so we took her in. We called her Scruffy. She has since been to the vet and the groomer and her ribs are no longer prominent. She's still called Scruffy, or Scruffinator, or Scruffnagel... She's a cute little stinker - definitely got poodle in her, and I'm thinking maybe some dachshund, because she's got a long body.

We have Bailey, she was suppose to be a border collie but is a black lab mix. We got her a few weeks after we had to have our beloved Dottie, who was a border collie, put down after she broke her back. My wife saw an ad in the newpaper for border collie puppies so we got her. Whereas Dottie was an extremely smart and easy to train dog, Bailey has been the exact opposite. I often refer to her as the 3rd dumbest dog in the world. She can be a good dog when she wants and just loves playing with our grandkids.

Borgi (Beagle/Corgi) #1 - Mojo. He was named after Mojo Nixon. He went to the shelter named Buddy, but he wouldn't answer to it, and we'd just seen Mojo in concert and thought it'd be a cool name for a dog. I wanted to name him after Bloom County's Basselope Rosebud, but DH wasn't crazy about that.

Borgi #2 - Binkley. He was named after Bloom County's Michael Binkley. We thought a shelter dog (originally named Puppy) was bound to have his own anxiety closet. He's actually pretty well-adjusted.

Mutt-dog #3 - Penny. No idea of her mix. She looks like a miniature Dalmatian with a Boxer-ish body, but she's Jack Russell size. We got her from my brother's family when their psychotic Lab took a dislike to her, and thought it might be confusing to my niece and nephew to change her name.

Space (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h16/smartaleq/SpaceAtPowell.jpg) is a purebred Malemute rescue doggie--she was named Cheyenne when I got her but I hated the name and changed it. It's because she's mostly black with white speckles all over but it also refers to what's between her ears. Also, when I was in high school the neighbor had a Malemute named Space that I used to take for walks with my dogs and he was so sweet I wanted to honor his memory. She's also SpaceDAWG, Hairy Behemoth and Fuzzbutt. I'm not sure what the point was of naming her anything, really, as like most Malemutes she's fiercely independent and only does what she wants!

Widget (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h16/smartaleq/IMAGE_0111.jpg) is a Border Collie/Jack Russell (?) mix, also a rescue. His original name was Dillan, again I really didn't like the name and didn't think it suited him even a little bit. He was originally going to be named Fidget but the SO thought that name fought, phonetically, too much with Pratchett, our indoor cat. So it mutated to Widget which is perfectly apropos for him, since a widget is a small utility that operates independently of anything else but has definite usefulness. We adopted Widget because Space was having issues with arthritis and couldn't hike with me any more, so I needed a hiking buddy and she needed someone to keep her active and force her to exercise her back leg--we needed a Widget! It worked, too--not only am I more active but as the linked picture of Space proves she has improved to the point where she can hike again--that picture was taken in the middle of a five mile hike. Widget really completed the family--he plays with everybody, and even our grumpy older cat who hates dogs has mellowed to the point where he tries to strop himself all over Widget when he comes in the house and will even play with Space a bit, thought I'd never see that! Widget is learning the tao of tennis ball, catch and fetch, and is learning how to run along with bikes. He's lightning fast and can keep up with me going full out on the bike--could probably outrun me, truth be told! Widget is also Widgie, Wiglet, Hooter (he makes the weirdest noises when he yawns and stretches) and BAT EARS!

Joplin is his name. I found him the day after my birthday in 1996, when my other dog, Bobbie McGee, started barking at a stray in the neighbor's yard. Turns out the little man was probably dumped. Anyway, Bobbie McGee -- Joplin. Both lab mixes (Bobbie was part border collie, part black lab) and Joplin is black lab and maybe pit mix. He's smarter than he lets on, is an incorrigible food addict, and has a little wild streak in him, just like Janis.

Nicknames are: Jop, the Jopster, Joppy (vet calls him this, not me), Snugglebunny (not in public, please, the other dogs will laugh), and since his surgery, FrankenDog 'cause he looks like he's been stitched back together. Responds to "What the HELL have you done now?"

Jimmy (http://www.geocities.com/gr8kat1/jimmy01.jpg) is half black Lab/half Aussie shepherd. My sister picked him up at St. James Church, where the owners were giving away puppies. She wanted me to call him St. James after the church, but that just seemed to high falutin' for a little poopy puppy. Jimmy was a compromise. I like to call him Jimbo Jones, though.

Peaches (http://www.geocities.com/gr8kat1/pea2.jpg) is a cocker spaniel. We got her when she was 3 years old, and Peaches was what her prior owners called her, so we didn't change it. I don't know the story behind the name, but I assume it's because she's a fuzzy little peach of a pup.

Our departed black lab/shepard mix was Cerebus (the three-headed dog, not the comic book character, and yes I know it's misspelled).

The current oldest boy, a black lab/chow, is Loki (pretty much self-explanatory).

The middle boy, an English Pointer, is Ellis (after Albert Ellis, who he has an autographed picture of).

The youngest boy, an Australian Cattle Dog (red heeler) mix (we have *no* clue what he's mixed with; possibly Pit), is Balthazar (the Wise Man, not the actor; had I ever been saddled with a male "fruit of my loins" this was the Chosen Name).

We have cats and birds as well; Mr. Kitty frustrated me by keeping with the naming convention with "his" cat, but steering *way* off the road with "his" bird and the middle dog.. I like things to make sense in the big-picture way, darnit! :)
