View Full Version : NO, I'm not your "go-to guy!"

I'm sorry I'm a reliable and hard worker. But I'm not your "go-to guy" in the warehouse. Yeah, I know I'm the best in the warehouse; at my last job I was salaried management and I'll kick ass on anybody because I'm goal - not money - orientated. But, if you restrict me to a 46 hour work-week, I CAN'T get everything done. Sorry, not possible, can't/won't happen. Give me the new door and alarm code and let me ask my (one) semi-reliable coworker to help and we'll come in after regular hours and make the warehouse perfect. But without that? I'm/we're useless.
Fuck you. I'll do my best, but either hire others with my attitude or let me work the hours we need to. If you don't do either, FUCK OFF. I'll deal with your concerns when I'm done with what I'm paid to do. I don't give a damn what you need, I can only do so much. I'll do what I need to do to keep my job, but fuck the extracurricular, unpaid bullshit.

"I'm going to reward you for being such a great worker by giving you even more work to do! Aren't you flattered?"

Oops, sorry, boss channeling there. As you were

Vinyl Turnip job interview #63-4a

"I want you to know flat out: I'm someone who's goal-oriented, not money-oriented. Straight truth. Ok, my goal is to make money, but that's just a coincidence. Just happens to be my goal right this moment. I'm also not going to be your "goto" guy. If that's what you're looking for, let's end it right here because am not that guy and I will never BE that guy. Wait— no, wait— you know which guy I am? Know what I'm gonna be for you? I'm your GOSUB guy. I will take care of business and return for more. Every time. I... oh. Really? Someone needs this room?"

OP, who are you talking to? I'm assuming your boss? How did that conversation go? Are you just practicing here?

But you're my main dude. My right-hand man. My rock. You can handle anything. I rely on you.

sorry....

It's not limited to warehouses, either (no surprise, I'm sure). As soon as they find out you CAN do something in the office, hey! New duty for you! At the same rate of pay, and all your old duties still need to get done in the same time.

But I'm totally money-oriented, not goal-oriented.

I'm your GOSUB guy.

For some reason, this really cracks me up.

Got a read error, huh? GOTO and GOSUB are both old computer programming terms, with the latter widely considered more "correct". I dunno how technical you want me to get, though. In any case, it's the kind of nerd joke one might have found in an episode of Futurama.

Ah, OK. Carry on.

Got a read error, huh? GOTO and GOSUB are both old computer programming terms, with the latter widely considered more "correct". More specifically, GOTO is a simple direction to go to a specific numbered line of code.

GOSUB works the same way except that it keeps things neat. It goes to that line and executes everything after that until RETURN is called, and then goes back to the point immediately after the GOSUB. (The "sub" is for "subroutine.")

IMHO a boss is ok to use that term IF they can reward the employee and that employee gets the first promotions when they open up. It is real hard to sound credible when you say "you are my go to guy" and then give the raise and promotion to someone else.

Or a paragraph name. And it's not always the wrong thing to do

Pascal, you wrascal? ;)
Sorry, but to be serious, my problem is that I was hired to do "job x." I'm currently doing job w,X,y, and z. Yeah, I want to work a 40 hour week. If I do ONLY my official duties, I can get them done in45/48 hours. If I don't do anything beyond what I "need" to do to in 40 hours, my company is lucky.
I don't want over-time, at least not the money (though I CAN use it.) But to do what you hired me to do, I need time to do it. Time unrestricted, please. It's either that, or don't whine about what "shoudda been" done.

That's when the boss loses all credibility and you treat them accordingly.
