What's the origin of the expression "See you in the funny papers"?

According to this site (http://www.stmaryswelcome.com/welcome.html), this saying was originated in 1935 by cartoonist Roy Crane in his comic strip "Wash Tubbs & Easy", which later morphed into "Captain Easy".
