In short no need for a regular modem as there is no modulation conversion. So much faster.
Newsgroup: ba.internet has lots of people with it.

A sorry, but this article completly glosses over how DSL really works, and how it overcomes the 56k STN limit. Wayback in my college days, the profs actualy told us the problem was in the HF attenuation and frequency dispersion in the copper. (Granted this was in optical signals class)
