Yes, kids. It's that time. After the runaway success of the previous three extravaganzas, we're gearing up for number four.
In the past, we've discussed having this in September. The weather is better, for one thing, and we're not competing as much for our picnic pavilion, nor are we having to deal with tourists. danceswithcats and I are reasonably sure that we all decided that September 15 works out best, because it doesn't interfere with the Jewish high holidays.
Now that we're a lot closer, we should start planning this.

I'm a tentative. If my shyness didn't get the best of me so often, I'd be a definite.
But hell, Dopers are good people, and I've only ever met one in the seven-and-a-half years I've been here, so I could perhaps be persuaded.
What are the protocols like on these Dopefests? Mainly hanging out and talking? What's the experience like?
You're supposed to bring a dish, right? I'm a stereotypical frozen-dinner-bachelor with zero culinary skills, but I'm sure I can pay a visit to good old Mom and bribe her into fixing up something nice. :)
Thanks for any answers to these questions.
Also, I do think that September is a great idea. (Well, I do the scheduling at my job, so any date would be fine, but I like the cooler air/fewer tourists thing.)

The drill: a potluck cookout, and lots of hanging out and talking. There might be juggling, kite-flying, or other low-key activities, but nothing too organized. Sometimes card games break out -- AntaresJB has been known to bring her guitar -- Jayjay usually brings his knitting -- there's a book (movie, CD) exchange -- there are usually a decent sprinkling of kids.
But mostly it's hanging out, talking, eating, and drinking -- mostly non-alcoholic beverages. We gather in a G'burg city park, where alcohol is prohibited. I'm not going to say that no alcohol has ever been consumed at one of these, but it's not usually the main point.
And yes, everyone brings something -- but "something" can also include drinks, ice, plates and utensils, or a couple of bags of chips, so you don't necessarily need to exploit your mom.

Don't know what I'll bring yet. The meatballs went over well last year.
neutron star, yeah, really low-key, mainly talking and hanging out. Sometimes small children wallow in the mud for our amusement. ;)
As far as beer, technically, alcohol is not allowed in the park. However, certain Dopers, at certain times, have been known to bring unidentified beverages into the park in, say, insulated mugs. What would absolutely not be welcomed (as I'm sure you know) is any obnoxious behavior that would draw negative attention to us. Not saying you would do this, of course, just kinda pointing out the obvious.
It's actually a lot of fun, and you should come!

I'm looking forward to meeting this chicken with a drinking problem. ;)
Monday I shall go meet the nice gray haired park lady and make sure that we have a pavilion for the 15th, and will follow with a confirming post.
Please indicate in your posts what you're bringing, and how many are in your party. A running list will be displayed near the top of each page as the thread progresses.
A directions post will be forthcoming on the weekend before, as well as mappy links.
Anyone wishing to stay overnight before and/or after is urged to make reservations ASAP. Oodles of touristas come to Gettysburg, and I think that by 15 Sept Gettysburg College will be back to business and most of the parent units will have fled, but there's no guarantee regarding room availability. This isn't a town where you can cruise in and expect to find a bed.
Have questions? Ask. I'll have to check the rules regarding critters.
Yay, kimche. :D
Rather than mess with success, jalapeño chili and chipotle with adobo chili will be brought.

Also, it will probably just be me -- hubby is a lurker and his people skills need work. So if anyone is from anywhere around me and you're interested in carpooling, let me know.

I'll bring my usual travel game kit. I may even be persuaded to try moderating a game of Mafia. (No way in heck I'm going to play in one!)

Not if you take that route. 30 is SLOW and twisty and when it's not twisty you are slowing down to go through every little town 3 house town along the way.
Your best bet (IMHO) is to take 76 to 70 (towards Baltimore) then cut up 15 N at Fredrick to get to Gettysburg.

I'm so there, as long as it's on the 15th. I put in for that day off at work several months ago. I call dibs on the lazy-person's contribution of paper plates, plasticware, napkins, etc. I so don't cook. Bad news, kids. I called the park office this morning, and the 15th is booked. So is the weekend of the 8th, and the weekend prior is Labor Day. August 25th is the Saturday before that, and pavilions are available.

The reason for moving to September was that people wanted cooler weather -- August 25th is definitely still summer.

I've got the permit right here on el-desko so we are good to go. For those of you with great memories, we're back where it all began with Gettysdope I, at the Kiwanis Pavilion. For those of you with shorter memories, we're at the one closer to the parking lot than where we were last year, which was the Lion's Pavilion.
We can use the place from 1000 until dusk, and I've got no clue when that is for early October. A sign will be posted proclaiming Cecil Adams as the authorized group.
Critters are permitted-no statement about leashes, but anything they deposit is the owner's responsibility to manage.

danceswithcats, BiblioCat – jalapeño chili and chipotle with adobo chili
Corrections to the above, including updates on the size of your posse, and victuals being brought will be garnered from the thread, but if something is missed, holler. ;)
For those who need directions, worry not. The directions page from last year will be posted when we draw closer to the event, and for anyone who would like to purchase something nearby, there are two markets available-one a few blocks, and another a few miles away.
My cell phone number will be provided to anyone who emails to request same: danceswithcats@att.net

We're going to be going on from the party to a friend's place in WV for the rest of the long weekend, so we'll definitely have the Idiots and will probably have to leave at a reasonable hour so we don't get lost in the wilds of WV trying to find their place. But knowing Papa Tigs, he'll probably throw something in the crockpot, so be prepared for delicious!

I'll be there with my usual assortment of burgers and dogs.
Mrs Geek and the 3 Geeklings will be there as well.
ETA: 3 1/2 hours is probably about right as long as you don't follow mapquest's crappy directions.
Or stay on 76 all the way to the US 15 exit just southwest of Harrisburg, then take that south; a llttle less time on US 15, I think (though you'll hit 3-4 traffic lights). Not sure whether that's shorter or longer than doing 76 to 70.
I concur though, do NOT take US 30 the whole way. It may be scenic but...
Unfortunately we are NOT gonna make it. One of these years, though....

http://www.gettysburgpa.org/images/PARKmap.pdf
Gettysdope directions
From Phila:
PA turnpike westbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit (was I-17, now I-236), take US-15 south. Take ramp right onto York Street, US-30 west. Follow US-30 into the center of town to a circle. Go halfway around the circle, continuing to follow US-30, street name now Chambersburg Street. Go through the first light, and turn left halfway down the block onto Franklin Street, and proceed south. Franklin Street becomes Long Lane at Breckenridge Street, and the park is to your right. We’re in the Kiwanis pavilion, which is a block past the brick administration building on your right.
From Pittsburgh:
PA turnpike eastbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit. After that, follow above.
From Washington:
I-495 inner loop to I-270 towards Frederick, MD. Follow US-15 north, into PA. Take exit for PA-134/Taneytown Road towards Gettysburg. At the traffic light where PA-134 crosses US-15 Business/Steinwehr Avenue, the name changes to Washington Street. Proceed north two blocks and turn left on Gettys Street, which will dead end at Long Lane. Turn left and then right opposite Queens Street into the parking area.
Park recon: Several ballfields, playground equipment such as swings, slides, and the like for kidlets. Three pavilions, called Kiwanis, Lions, and Firemen’s. The first two are located closest to Long Lane & Queens Street, with the latter a block North at Long Lane & Gettys Street.
For those who wish to purchase foodstuffs locally-there is a Kennies supermarket on Middle Street between West and Franklin Streets, less than ¼ mile away. Those folks using the Philly directions will pass a Giant supermarket on US-30 about a half-mile west of US-15.

I've talked to Papa Tiger about what we should bring, but thus far we are undecided. Except it'll be something he can throw in the crockpot the day before to cook up, and then just heat up again when we get there. Probably some delicious Guamanian or Filipino dish; those are his specialties. I'll see if I can persuade him to fix adobo, that's the BESTest!
We can also bring a variety of diet soft drinks. And a big thermos of Louisiana coffee, for the coffee drinkers amongst us.
Are there directions from I-70? Since we're coming from Annapolis, we can avoid all the major metropolitan areas and just pick up I-70 west of Baltimore. But I'm not sure where that would fit in your various sets of directions.

They do. I brought something in a Crock Pot last year. dwc also usually brings his chili in a Crock Pot.

No problem, dances, we always take the pups out on leashes. Maryland law -- at least in our county -- only allows them to be off-leash in designated off-leash areas or when "training." We do take Isaac off-leash to throw his toy for him to retrieve, since that is how we reinforce his good behavior, but that's only for that limited purpose and then he's right back on.
But there's nothing saying the dogs can't go into a mud puddle while leashed. Just try 'em. :D

Does this mysterious place have an actual name, or is it just "the park in Gettysburg"? :D
"The Gettysburg Area Recreation Park"

We're going to be minus a kid. Gramma has special plans for the sprog, so he's spending the weekend with her. Airman and I will still be there.

Yes. If signs indicate "Greensburg 10 miles" you've gone too far.

I'll be bringing some books and computer games. Anybody want a set of Risk and Castle Risk?I'll try to remember books and DVDs for the swap, some of which I picked up at last year's swap.

I noticed in that link that electricity for the pavilions has to be requested in advance. I really, really hope that it has been? Or is that just something they put in there to make people think that it won't work so they don't run up the city's electric bill unnecessarily? :dubious:

Nah, I'm just bringing along a project I need some geek help with. I need to find the shorts and insulate them, and I need to figure out why the blinking LED causes such a brightness drop in all the other LEDS and why that didn't happen last year and if using a number of batteries in series instead of one ninevolt will fix things.

paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware and cups (couldn't remember if any of the drinky people were bringing cups so I got them anyway) have been purchased. Also nametags (we never use the whole pack of nametags, and yet I never remember to keep the leftovers for next year...). Will need to gather books to swap before bed... A girl from work gave me a massive bag of crappy romance novels a few months ago and I will be pleased to foist some of them off on unsuspecting Dopers. Muahaha.
Oh and guitar. That too.

Besides myself, there will be my hubby and my two younger kids; teen's friend had to bow out at the last minute.
In addition to a cheese assortment, I will bring the ingredients to make Crock Pot brownies, will mix them up when we arrive, and in 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours, we will have rich, warm, chocolatey loveliness!
We're leaving here around 9AM, quick side-stop in Hagerstown, then on to Gettysburg. We figure to arrive by 1PM. So I should be there with the cheese by the time everyone wants lunch.

Great to see everyone again for another afternoon of hanging out with the usual suspects.
We successfully delivered all of the unclaimed books to the little family book store in New Oxford on the way back here. The proprietor came out to investigate two suspicious people mucking around the outdoor buck a book pile, and instead took the offerings inside. He's probably sitting there now rolling his eyes-Oy! Another bodice ripper book. ;D

It was great to see everyone, and meet some new people. I'm glad MudGirl was able to find some mud.
AntaresJB, thanks for the private concert. You have a lovely voice.
As danceswithcats said, the leftover books were dropped off at the used bookstore and hopefully they will find a new home.
Looking forward to GettysDope V!

Okay, home, had a great time, but I'm exhausted. I can, however, take the time to post this, since it's so very simple!
1 box (about 20oz) brownie mix
Whatever ingredients the back of the box calls for
1C hot water
1C chocolate syrup
Mix up the mix as if you were going to bake brownies. Put it in a 4-6qt. slow cooker. Mix the hot water and chocolate syrup together, pour over the brownie batter; it will sink down. Cook on high for 2 and 1/2-3 hours. Especially good if you serve it very warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! :)
Okay, off to bed with me!

I grabbed that and a book with film criticism by James Agee.
I'm sure the sprog will love the How Things Work. He's all about that these days. :)
Thanks for the book!

Just a warning for future Gettydopers...danceswithcats makes sneaky chili. I was told it was the hotter of the two, but when I put it in my mouth it wasn't really very spicy at all. Then about 30 seconds later...FWWWWAAAAAHHHHH!
Sneaky chili.

Speaking of sneaky chili, MsRobyn, did you wind up on the couch last night? How is Airman Doors feeling after the helping he had?
That was fun. The food was excellent and the company was better. Next year, fer sure!

Airman volunteered to sleep on the couch. Actually, I gave it up and went to bed, but he rather chivalrously decided to fall asleep on it after I went upstairs. He's just thoughtful that way. :D

For those who really, really liked the Adobo, I've discovered that Amazon.com sells the recommended-by-PapaTiger Mama Sita's prepackaged seasoning mix.
ETA: I've ordered several packages already.

I brought my camera, but it never left my knitting bag. :( I'm glad to see that, for a welcome change, there was not one photo of me stuffing my face. That's my usual picnic pose. Sigh.
I never thought to look on Amazon.com for the adobo mix. That's a good find, Morgyn -- the only place locally we've found to buy it is a little Filipino grocery store half an hour away. And heaven forbid we ever run out of adobo mix!
I also recommend the Mama Sita's tocino -- put it on thin-sliced London broil or some similar lean cut and broil. Yummy!!
ETA: And I'll second the sneaky chili vote -- although I only had the allegedly mild version, it snuck up on me that evening!
