View Full Version : Curious After Effects of Eating Smacks, or Golden Crisp

Just always found this interesting, after eating Smacks (the cereal with the frog in the hat) or Golden Crips (the cereal with the bear) which were both quite delicious, I noticed that the next time I had to pee it smelled remarkably similiar to the cereal I had just eaten. Is this just me? Do certain chemicals that give Smacks their flavor/scent just pass right through?

I would imagine it is a possibility... Beets turn your pee red, so why not have a scent chemical filtered out that was too?

I have three kids who eat Smacks regularly, and my husband and I have both noticed this phenomenon whenever we weaken and indulge in a bowl ourselves.
I'm not sure what chemical in the cereal causes this, though I would imagine it would be one of the artificial flavorings included.

I never noticed that.
But:
My mouth gets cut to friggin shreds every time i eat a bunch of Cap'n Crunch. Either Peanut Butter or Regular flavor (never tried the Berry flavor).
This happen to anyone else?

Both effects happen to me (Smacks and Cap'n Crunch). Try not to have the Cap'n Crunch hit your gums when chewing :)

Has anyone noticed that kids cereals smell much better than they taste? I think they use chemicals to create those smells and thats whats showing up in your pee. This happens to me after I drink a 20oz. of diet Mountain Dew. Also, it's more yellow from the soda too. Sure does this too.

I have noticed this phenomenon, too.
What surprises me is how fast this occurs. I can eat breakfast, drive to work, pee before lunch and -- whoop! there it is!
Whatever chemical it is that creates the smell must have small molecules that get absorbed right into the bloodstream and then race to the kidneys.
p.s. I really like Smacks and Golden Crisp. Even back in the bad old days when they were called Sugar Smacks and Super Sugar Crisp. I vote for reverting back to the old names so we can be sure we're getting the proper amount of sugar in our diet. Otherwise we might buy a box of Cracklin' Oat Bran or something and come down from our sugar high.

If you drink enough coffee, your pee smells like coffee. It's kinda creepy in that you have to think back "did I drink any coffee today? Oh yeah, I did."
Also, if you want your pee to smell absolutely terrible, try asparagus. It lasts several cycles.
Compared to those, I think Golden Crisp would be a welcome smell.

I was readying a history of breakfast cereal (don't ask) and it turns out there was a certain short-lived cereal that was bright pink. It was pulled off the shelves when they discovered that people who ate it ended up having pink urine, which I imagine would be quite alarming if you'd forgotten what you'd eaten for breakfast!

I just wanted everyone to know that this damned thread reminded me how much I loved Captain Crunch (the one with Crunchberries, and the Peanut Butter flavor), so I went out and bought some this morning.
Thanks a lot, everyone!
I can see it now: "The Straight Dope rots your teeth."
Re the OP, I've eaten Super Golden Crisp (or whatever the hell it's called now), but I've never noticed what it did to my urine. (I confess I'm not in the habit of smelling it regularly.)
I missed an opportunity to buy a box of Super Golden Crisp and do my part to fight ignorance here at the SDMB. I hope you'll all forgive me.
OTOH, if anyone who wants to chastize me overmuch re this lapse, I'll tell ya what: I'll eat the cereal and send YOU a sample of my urine to smell.

I've never noticed the coffee phenomenon, but asparagus is definately a stink-maker. The funny thing is, not everyone experiences this, so if you discuss it with friends, half will know what you're talking about and half will just look at you blankly. Excretory habits are a big topic of conversation among my friends and me.

The same thing happens when you are taking Pennicilin. The smell of the urine after about a day of taking it is exactly the same.

Eat some smacks & then asparagus. Ought to be interesting.

I seem to recall some Stephen King story where this kid was were vomiting what looked like blood but then it turned out to be this horribly over-dyed red colored breakfast cereal. I'll try to get back to you on that one if I remember it...maybe it was inspired by the pink-pee cereal.

It's from his book Cujo - the dad in that book is some type of ad exec or writer in charge of a cereal advertising campaign.

Let me disabuse you of the notion that Cracklin' Oat Bran is good for you. If you ever try some (and can get beyond the fact that it looks like enlarged cat food), you'll notice this bizarre lardy coating in your mouth. So then you'll take a gander at the label and you'll spew milk-sodden oat kibble all over the breakfast table when you read the fat content.

This is a funny thread. I can always count on someone at The Straight Dope to ask something I've wondered myself.

How many apples does it take to make cider? I figure it must be pretty concentrated.
After I quaffed a few ciders once...
a trip to the bathroom brought memories of apple blossems in bloom. Not too bad, mind you, but a bit startling if you didn't expect it.

I read in a medical journal a few years ago about a cereal called Nerds that caused kids who ate a lot of it to have some kind of alarming bowel movements. I think they were bright red or something. Anyway, the best part was that the doctors writing the article actually referred to the syndrome as "Nerds Turds."

I've noticed a similar effect with corned beef. Not all brands, just some of them. My pee smells real strange just an hour or two later. But, darn it, I like corned beef too much to stop.
