Leaving for Milwaukee in a few days what shouldn't I miss? Is it too far to drive to Chicago? I have relatives there. If it is too far for a day trip forget it... What should I see in Milwaukee Museums? Attractions? Lavern and Shirley Brewery?

Well, Marquette University has Tolkien's original manuscript of LOTR and The Hobbit (ands some other stuff). My favorite was the moon phase and travel calculator on the back of Oxford luch menus.

Chicago is about 1.5 hours away, an easy day trip.
As for what to do, this has a lot to do with your interests.
Brewery tours:
Miller (http://www.planet99.com/milwaukee/tour/5587.html)
Sprecher (http://www.sprecherbrewery.com/tours.php)
(both include free beer)
Museums:
Milwaukee Public Museum (www.mpm.edu) is okay...
but the new Discovery World Museum (www.discoveryworld.org) looks freakin' awesome, but I've never been.
Obligatory Art Museum recommendation (www.mam.org), it has this Calatrava designed moving art deal thing in the front that is waaaaaaaay overrated.
And much more, but that really depends on what you want to do, and where your interests lie...

OMG! I will take pictures of that if they allow. I wonder if I can touch it. It would completely trump my other reasons for being there. :D

They don't allow close up photography (copyright reasons). There is some stuff on display (cases of framed), most is on microfilm. We wnet as a group and Matt brought out some of the stuff. Wouldn't hurt emialing him to see what you can arrange.

Well, all clowns are scary, so I guess you could say that the entire thing is a salute to terror. This is also the place where professional clowns have their faces registered, through being painted on eggs. (I think it's eggs; it might actually be plates.)
I'm by no means suggesting you visit all these places in a single week. I think you'd go mad trying.
If you like airplanes/aeronautics, there's The Mitchell Gallery of Flight (http://www.mitchellgallery.org/), an aviation museum. It's in General Mitchell International Airport. It showcases the contributions Wisconsin Residents have made to aviation. General William Mitchell, the guy it's named after, grew up in Milwaukee and is considered the father of the U.S. Air Force.
The Bristol Renaissance Faire (www.renfair.com/bristol/index.php) runs until Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, and it's about an hour drive from Milwaukee.
I was going to recommend The Hoard Historical Museum and Nation Dairy Shrine (http://www.hoardmuseum.org), because I felt honor-bound to do so, but I see they're closed and under construction this summer. Bummer. It's in Fort Atkinson, should you feel moved to return once the construction is finished. ;)
The Pabst Mansion (http://www.pabstmansion.com/) is pretty cool. Basically, it's a huge mansion built by a beer baron, that was nearly razed for a parking lot in the '70s, and finally purchased by folks with historical preservation in mind. Bizarre, bizarre antler chandelier (http://www.pabstmansion.com/phototour/2.html) in the foyer. The main attractions are the oppulence of the place and the art collection. Oh, and the Pabst Archives, but I don't know of how much interest they'd be to a casual visitor.
Along the lakeshore, Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum (http://www.cavtmuseums.org/vt/home.html) is another mansion turned museum. It has a huge formal garden and lots of art.
Old World Wisconsin (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/oww) is about forty minutes from Milwaukee, and it basically recreates 19th-century rural life in Wisconsin -- frontier life. Check out the website. There are lots of exhibits and events.
Milwaukee also has The Black Holocaust Museum (http://www.blackholocaustmuseum.org/), which I'm pretty much offering up as an information point, as it's closed Aug. 19-24 this year for summer break.

If you want to browse some websites ahead of time then check out onmilwaukee.com.
There is also a neat auto museum in Hartford which is only a half hour from BD.

Try to visit Larry's Market while you're in Brown Deer. It's a tiny yet upscale specialty grocery which caters to the rich folks in nearby River Hills. Their selection of cheeses, olive oils, and pastas are out of this world!!
The River Lane Inn in Brown Deer has some of the best seafood in the state, too.

While in the Milwaukee area heading towards Elkhorn, keep your camera ready for the Beast of Bray Road. You may feel safer, if you think it's a descendant of a troup of dancing bears escaped from a Delavan circus.

Sadly, I must work all week, an hour from Milwaukee. But if the timing is right, I'm willing to blow off a bit of the afternoon to drive there.
It's really mind-boggling to see JRRT's original, hand-drawn title page to his sequel to "The Hobbit".
At first, he titled it "The Magic Ring" in that spidery handwriting of his. Then he drew a line through it, and under that, he wrote "The Lord of the Rings".
And the original artwork of his is amazing!
I hope you get the chance to see it, at any rate!

If you're in Brown Deer, you can see my in-laws' house. My wife grew up there! OK, so that's not interesting to anyone but me and the missus. But, if you want to go to a fun bar in downtown Milwaukee, there's the Safe House (link (http://www.safe-house.com)). It's a spy-themed place that you get to by an unmarked door in an alley. It's a cool place, with lots of fun stuff like a secret exit that you get to through the phone booth.
Have fun!

I think Larry is upset because he didn't know the password and had to jump through hoops to get in the place. Then he found out that everyone in the bar could see the silliness on the closed circuit TV's. Right? ;)

I enjoyed eating at Three Brothers Restaurant when I was in Milwaukee. I toddled over to the OnMilwaukee (http://www.onmilwaukee.com/dining/) web site to check the name, and lo and behold I see a review!
The restaurant features authentic Serbian food, and it's located in "an historic triangular Schlitz tavern." These taverns, we were told, were built by the brewery back in the day to sell their wares.

I also don't drink, but that has never stopped me from going out with friends to a local pub...I'll just order something else. Uh, no. It's right smack dab in the middle of Milwaukee. Right off the freeway (I-43) and just north of the Marquette interchange. You've seen it a million times. There's a big Leinie logo on the side of the building facing the freeway, that's it.

I highly recommend the Milwaukee Art Museum. It is outstanding, and it was a huge surprise to me to find such quality in Milwaukee. I used to work at the Smithsonian and the National Gallery in DC, and I've seen most of the other big art museums in the US, and this is right up there.
But i do agree that the moving architectural "sail" on the building is just a piece of overblown crap.

Well, yes the building is rather strange, can't say as I paid much attention to it, but the art inside is excellent. Actually there is some overemphasis on beer art (my guess would be the Miller being a major donor might be related to that), but that's easy to skip over.

Well, sure, that's seasonal. Aside from the art museum, veterans park, and Pieces of Eight there aren't any permanent features that I consider to be attractive to a large number of people. Bradford Beach and the surrounding lake shore could be soooo much more than it is right now. Think of Newport Beach, Daytona, etc. of course not to the same scale, but you have to start somewhere.

I think the problem is that alot of the beach is at the bottom of a 200 foot bluff. North of the lakefront there are large houses at the top of the bluff. You could probably do something on the south side where I think everything is a bit more level, but that would invovle getting rid of houses, condos and park.

Plus, it leads you onto Water Street if you want to do the high style tour, and you can finish up at Trocadaro, which opened up just a few months before I left but has expanded.
Wolski's is nice in an authentic, blue collar, neighborhood bar way, but you have to close Wolski's. It's best to start out at Paddy's for a couple of early beers, work your way down North Ave. From Lankmark to The Uptowner (or maybe Judges), take a cab to the west end of Brady Street and work your way up from The Roman Coin ($1 draws of Blatz, which you have to order just to say you've done it) up to Nomad, have a late night bite at Apollo, and then walk over to Wolski's to close.
Do not let anyone talk you into going to the Uptowner. You've been warned.
We're going to some Irish Pub this evening with the corporate jimjam so It'll probably be a hair better than Applebees. But who knows the guy bringin us is a like long Milwaukeeite.Would that be County Claire? Because if it ain't, it should be. And it's a wee bit more than a hair better than Crabapplebee's, with Murphy's Stout and Smithwick's on tap. If you get there early grab a table in the snug, else, sit along the west windows. I like the pork tenderloin (which I rarely get otherwise) but the Irish stew and the pot roast are also highly recommended. Mostly, though, I go for the mashed potatoes.

Wow, that's quite a memory there Stranger. Once again, you do not fail to impress....
I can't remember what bars I went to last Friday. You've got the Downtown-Walker's Point-Water Street pub crawl all figured out.
Ever been to Pigsville?

Well we are not really going to be bar hopping all night, well I won't be, but thee are some younger people in the group who went out last night and looked like death warmed over this morning... :D Oh do I remmber those days...no more thank you!
Yes, we are going to County Clare, I believe there are some people staying there and they really like it. As long as they have Sheperds Pie and good smashed potatoes I'll be fine.
