View Full Version : NHL Hockey Draft Pool 2007

meek

Hey there Doper Hockey fans.

I wanted to see if anyone was interested in joining a NHL hockey draft pool.

Total points to keep it simple. (G and A = 1 pt)

I was thinking of a Yahoo live draft on Sunday, Sept 23 (or Sat the 22) at 6 pm Mountain Time. (5 pm pacific - 8 pm eastern)

Sayyyyyy, just skaters, no goalie, 12 skaters or so, depending on the number of entrants, with no restrictions for positions, but I am open to all suggestions.

"Snake" picking order. (the person picking last in the first round will pick first in the second round and so on.)

Without the need to adjust player rosters, it will be very simple to play so those who have no idea what they are doing will still have a decent chance of being competitive.

So......... Anybody?

I'll create the league on Yahoo based on the feedback I get here, and start a new thread with the details if there is enough interest.

The season is starting soon.

Cool.

I'd like to get at least 8-10 people in. 12-14 people would be perfect for a 12 man roster.

If you are on the fence about joining, or don't feel that you can make a live draft, just use the rankings and have Yahoo auto pick for you.

Come-on folks! Just a few more entries and it's a go.

(Drops the gloves and challanges opposition.) ;)

Ba-da-BUMPing this thread.

I would like to try.......forgive me ahead of time, but I am a rookie to any sort of draft pools, so I might ask some pretty simple questions as time goes on.

I will not be available for 9/22, but Sunday the 23rd should work. Thanks meek for letting me know about your thread.....I totally missed it.

Go to the Yahoo Fantasy Hockey sign up page....

League ID#: 46298
Password: cecil

League Name: SDMB Puckheads

Custom League URL: http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/sdmb
Draft Type: Live Draft
Draft Time: Sat Sep 22 4:30pm MDT (6:30 pm Eastern time) (Yahoo made me choose this time - Sunday only offered a 7am draft time for some reason)
Max Teams: 12 (I can edit this as needed)

Scoring Type: Points Only

No player acquisitions allowed
No trades allowed
No waivers

Start Scoring on: Monday, Sep 24

We all draft a roster of 8 forwards, 3 D-men and a goalie.

Goals= 1pt.
Assists= 1pt.

Goalies earn 2 points for a win and 3 points for a shutout.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll ask a passing Mod to please edit the title of this thread.

Is this ok with everybody? Any other suggestions?

There are a few spots still open right now, so head on over and let the trash talking begin!

Good luck and drop the puck!

Oh..... and....

GO OILERS!!!

Click on the link that Meek provided. A page will appear saying "There was a problem." Right over the "a," there is a link to "sign up now." Clicking on said link will provide instructions for signing up. Select the "Join Existing League" tab, and then click "Accept an invitation to join existing league." From there, use the info which Meek provided and you're set.

I'm definitely in. Go Wings!

Bummer, I'll be at work during the draft. :(
You can pre-rank all of the players if you still want to join in. What you do is you rank players in order of preference. The computer will always draft the highest available player on your list for you. You don't have to rank all of the players, and if your list runs out, then it will use the default rankings supplied by Yahoo sports.

What's next? You wait. And wait. Until the draft day clock gets to zero. Then, when it goes to zero, draft day starts and rankings are assigned. If you are online, you get to pick from the available players. If you aren't, Yahoo will pick based on the list of draft picks which you created. So... for the next week, you do nothing but contemplate who is the dark horse who will have a breakout 100 point season. My vote goes to Marek Malik :p

Ok.....rookie question:

Q1. Is the draft separated into three categories (Forwards, Defense, Goalies) which will only be chosen separately, or is any position picked at any point (ex. pick a goalie in the 1st round, a defensemen in the 2nd and a forward in the 3rd, etc.) in the draft?

No. They are all lumped together. It's up to you when to take a player.

If you take all forwards with your first 8 picks, you will only be allowed to take d-men or goalies beyond that point. If you land a Goalie early, I believe you will not have an option to take another one. (They become greyed out IIRC.)

The Yahoo rankings rate the players based on last years totals, so they are a fairly accurate guide as to who the top point getters will be.

The key is to avoid injuries. It's really a crapshoot.

She can't just drop the extra goalie & pickup whatever she wants from waivers?

Are waivers currently enabled? If so, I'll try to do that.

P.S. I'm a guy.

Edit: I see the waiver option has been opened for one day. If nobody posts an objection by 7:50 Easten Standart Time, I will exchange my goalie for a D man.

I just changed the "Max Moves" from 'No player acquisitions allowed' to '1'.

If Danja wants to snag a d man and drop a goalie - it should work.

I'm watching the wings/pens game right now and i have to say, i don't have your confidence. He's already been injured twice, once when Gary Roberts somehow stepped on his glove and got his skate stuck in it and once when the puck took a funny bounce and hit him oddly. Both times he went down on the ice and stayed down for a bit.

Also, I disagree. I think Rysto, Key Lime Guy, and ICU812 have the best teams.

Wow. Nasty luck. I hate to see someone start off in the hole.

We let Danja drop a goalie and pick up a d-man... so.....

IF.... (And its a big if....)

IF nobody has a problem with it, I would allow you to replace your injured d-man.

If no one says anything in the next day or so, go ahead and replace him.

NOTE: This is only because there have been no games played as of yet.

Anyone losing a player due to injury beyond this point will not be allowed to replace him.

If anyone is against it, sorry dogbutler, but you will have to keep him.

My leading scorer, with 4 points, is Antoine Vermette. I chose Marc Savard over Jason Spezza, knowing full well that Spezza was going to kill me for making that pick(Savard: 2 P, Spezza 10 P). Scott Gomez and Alexander Frolov have a single assist between them.

Scott Gomez is killing me. 3 points centering Jagr? Come on. Micheal bloody Nylander put up 90+ points doing that. Shea Weber should be off of the IR soon which will give me a bit of a boost, but unless Gomez picks it up I won't be making a move on the top guys.

I'm gonna give him till at least December to see if he can step it up. He had a win last night at least. To be fair, it's not all his fault...the guys in front have hung him out to dry several times. It's disappointing that he was my first round pick. But the Canes are doing well. Did anybody expect Brindy to be one of the league leaders in scoring? I knew he would have a solid showing this season, but I have to say I'm astounded by his level of play at his age.

So, on Thursday after much agonizing I finally pulled the trigger and used my one transaction to dump Marc-Andre Fleury & pick up Marty Biron.

Hours later one of my d-men Kevin Bieksa gets his achilles tendon sliced apart by a skate. Possibly career-threatening.

Sorry about the time between now and my last post. Been dealing with some issues regarding my team's scoring (Owen Nolan, how could you do this to me!)

But, I'm back, and rearin' to go. I think I assemblesd a pretty good team, although my picking of Pavelski was an inadvisable venture. Thought he would have a breaout year. Be put on Joe Thornton's line, or something. But I used my roster move to bring in Mike Comrie, a more safe choice.

Interesting game tonight between the Sens and Slugs. Some history:

Early in the 2005-2006 season, Ottawa was just dominating the league(save Carolina). They got off to an amazing start and then coasted a bit to a division title. That resulted in a nasty 5-game playoff ouster at the hands of the Buffalo Sabres and a large serving of humble pie. In the offseason, Ottawa lost both Chara and Havlat and people proclaimed that Ottawa was no longer a contender. That seems to be borne out early in the 2006 season when Ottawa stumbled out of the gate to a 6-9-1 record. The Sabres, meanwhile, got off to that amazing 14-1-1 start. But in mid-November, Ottawa handed Buffalo a pair of tough losses in a home-and-home series that really turned the Sens' season round. This time it was Buffalo who coasted to a division title for the rest of the season, and then got humbled in a 5-game spanking by Ottawa. In the offseason, Buffalo lost Briere and Drury and people proclaimed that they were no longer a contender. And now, Ottawa's the team with a superlative 14-2 start while Buffalo has stumbled to a 6-9-1 record, and the two begin a home-and-home series tonight. I think that this series will say a lot about both teams. Does Ottawa still remember the lesson in humility they were taught in 2006? Is there anyone in the Buffalo locker room who can lead a turnaround?

Gah - My roster's managed 12 measly points during the past 7 days. An average of 1 point per player per week. And I've only got one player on IR.

Thornton, the bum, has zero points this week - he's supposed to be the Man.

My team has more dogs than the Cleveland Browns endzone.

Recchi is healthy scratch, M.A. Bergeron is in Nolan's doghouse, Michelak is oft hurt, I blew my injury replacement for Havlat already.

Pitkanen is finally back but the Oil can't score unless it's a shootout.

I'm not going to contend this year. I doubt the Oilers turn it around as well.

Just wait til next year!

Ottawa's either going to flame out in the first round or utterly lay waste to the East again, only to get killed by either Detroit or Anaheim in the Finals.

Given their .500 record since their 13-2 start, the former is looking disturbingly likely.

BTW: I'm getting lonely here up on top. I haven't seen any of you come near me in like a month.

I have a full menu of grudges.

There's the cocktail I call the flaming Visnovsky

For hors d'ouevres, I have a heaping plate of Jordan Staal balls

Then there is the delicious pairing of Bieksa tendon and ankle of Smyth, with a side of Zubrus goose eggs

Dessert consists of a lovely Fleury-less souffle, topped with Biron-on-the-bench sauce.

You're giving him too much credit, I'm pretty sure loyalty never crossed Rysto's mind.

Seriously though...they have to get him to waive the no-trade and get something for him. Edmonton's first round pick via Anaheim would make me very happy. OTOH, I hate the thought of him playing for another team, he should retire as a Leaf.

Ideally, he pulls a Tkachuk and comes back in the summer. But does he really want to spend the end of his career on a last place, rebuilding team?

You were locked in once you made your one waiver move. The only reason that I'm so far ahead is that none of my top players slumped or had significant injuries. It was mostly luck; had somebody snagged Nabokov ahead of me I probably would have ended up with Ray Emery, which would have more than blown away my lead over Kid_A.

If we do this again next year we might want to think about allowing more roster moves to take the luck more out of the equation.

I've played in the sportsnet.ca playoff pool for the past few years. I can definitely set that up if people are interested in it.

You choose 1 centre, 2 wings, 2 defensemen and 1 goalie for the first round, then you can choose again for the second round and one more time for the conference finals and the Stanley Cup finals.

I haven't played in a playoff pool on any other websites so I can't compare.

Maybe next season, we should consider having trades if any player on your team ends up on the IR. The season ending injuries to Sourrey and Bergeron (combined with the dog goalie that goes by the name of Mason) pretty much killed any chance of competing against the rest of the pack. Anyways, it was fun nonetheless to watch.
