Fellow Dopers,

I will be visiting Portland, ME in mid-November. Where should I go within two hours by car of Portland that will provide me with the absolute cheapest opportunity to have a lobster killed at my behest (bonus points if I can point into a tank and say, "that one," triple word score if I can reach into the tank and bring the lobster still angry and unbound by rubber-bands into its boiling demise by my own bare hand) and served with butter, possibly French fries or cole-slaw, and nothing else?

As a middle-schooler I recall visiting Maine and eating at this place that was really more dock than restaurant. The french-fries were frozen and rewarmed in the microwave, and the cole-slaw was scooped out of a tub with a super-market label on it, and the lobster was served with nothing but butter and a bib. The lobster was served outside on a seagull-dropping contaminated picnic bench by a wrinkled woman worn from alternate duties of serving lobster and selling diesel fuel for the boats. And it was like $5 for a 1.5 pounder.

Can anyone provide me with an address or name for a place to have a similar experience this coming November?

2 Hour drive? Are you kidding? You will be in Maine, most off the main path lobster huts are cheap. You should be able to get one at market value for 7.50-9 bucks. Anywhere in Portland.

Don't forget most clam shacks and such that you are talking about won't be open in the "off season" so you may need to settle for a store bought or proper restaurant lobster.

Try here: Port-West Seafood Grill & Bar
155 Riverside St
Portland, ME 04103-1041
Phone: (207) 775-6536

Gaah. Don't go there. Since most places (as philsphr mentioned) which all be shuttered up by that point, you'll want to try some of the "other" places. If you're in Portland, you can always try Dimillo's Floating Restaurant:
http://www.dimillos.com/restaurant/index.html

Or, try going to the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport -- it's only a few feet from L.L. Bean's.

Or, let me know when you're here, and we can have a mini-seafood-doper-party-thingy right here in good ol' Maine. Plenty o fun stuff to do and see up heyah.

yessuh.

The difference in price is going to be a buck or two, not worth hunting for IMO. If you are in Portland you won't be able to swing a dead cat without hitting good lobster.

Am I the only one who thought of Monty Python when I read this?

Yeah, that's what we want. Maine lobster, shipped to Cali, and then back to Maine? Yum.

I have friends who own boats -- I can get lobster from them. It's about 3 miles from my house to their boat.

Not to mention, I'd think anything regarding lobster that gcame from you, would have a lil bit o you in (or on) every lobstah.

Ew.

FTR, I thought it was adorable.

I think you got a little mixed up, though. I thought you were the cheapest lobster near San Francisco, CA?

Definitely a Mainer. Are you a Maineiac as well?

[Phlosphr's Uncle] Up here in Dexter we don't get much in the way of people looking for a good lawbstah - mostly people lawst looking for Stephen Kings house or the Old Town Factory. [/Phlosphr's Uncle]

I wish I knew more of Maine's good clam shacks - we were up in Lubec last summer and had some of the best clams and lawbstah rolls I've ever had.

People from Maine know their lobster, yes sir. However, their comedy radar has never really developed.

Naw. I made a joke about his joke -- and he had technical difficulties.

In Maine, lobster's one o those things you just don't screw with. Yessuh.
